"The foolish and the dead alone never change thier opinion." James Russell Lowell
Running is the word this weekend with lots going on at the Boston Marathon for Louisiana folks and even more going on at the New Orleans Crescent City Classic 10km. There is also a Celebration of Like 5km in Bossier City going on along with the third velodrome race in Baton Rouge for track cyclists.
It's great too seeing all the middle and high school track runners pushing the running pace at track meets across the state. I especially enjoyed LSU super track coach of all time Pat Henry putting on the joint collegiate and high school track meet at LSU last weekend. Coach Henry will probably go down as one of the greatest track coaches in the country for sure and maybe even the best in the world.
Speaking of youngsters, I thoroughly enjoyed 14-year -old Jason Dylan of the Baton Rouge area putting a whippin' on the category 4 riders in Mississippi, especially those like Heath Fontanna. Fontanna is a professional category 4 racer and has managed to elude USCF officials to upgrade him to a category 3 rider.... But I still love him!
Yes, I enjoyed watching the bike races last weekend in Brookhaven, MS and Natchez, MS. There were some pretty impressive fields of riders out on the courses at the two venues. Congrats to Frank Moak and Aaron Tiffee who did a fine job putting on the events that made the third annual Mississippi Grand Prix. It was nice to watch, since the pace seemed fairly intense and was no doubt tougher than I could handle at this point in the season.

There's still plenty of room to enter the April 24, 2004 Louisiana Triathlon at New Roads in Pointe Coupée Parish. Register online via active.com. We've got a great field coming together and it's still one of the best priced triathlon values in Louisiana. Except for the last half mile of the 5km run, the course is the same. We are staging a point-to-point race this year where our finish line will be at False River Park/Scott Civic Center where we will have a great post-race party with lots of food from the Livonia Lions Club and unique and delicious Rocket Fajitas created by Baton Rouge triathlete Pat Fellows. Come join us in New Roads.

Jen Perez, an 18-or-so-year-old NOBC member, qualified to compete at Worlds for Duathlon
this recently. She beat the girl who won nationals last year by over
six minutes. She will be going to Belgium in May where the course will be
flat so if we can keep her healthy and injury free (and keep her mind
off of the new boy she's interested in) she can have a good shot at
doing well.

Laurence Cohen, you missed one in your note last week on Louisiana being the multisport capital. Every year the USAT off-road duathlon national championship is held in Ruston at Lincoln Parish Park. Lincoln Parish Park is the birthplace of Xterra triathlon. This is one of the best mtb trails in the US. I've competed in this race for the last two years and have taken a first in the 35-39 male age group. Here is a link to Jimmy Liners website. He is a big time cross country runner and kind of keeps an unofficial web page for the park. http://jimliner.net/running/main/race_calendar.html

BR Cyclist Writes Essay on Riding
From Michael Roper
Sam Irwin, an old and decrepit mountain biker and sometimes roadie
from Baton Rouge, has authored a very clever essay
entitled "Kneeling at the Altar of Schwinn, 1966" in a new book just
released called Bicycle Love: Tales of Passion, Joy, and Sweat. It
details the long summer hours he spent toiling away in 1966 at his
grandfather's country store earning money to buy a golden Schwinn
Sting Ray.
The book is a collection of 60 essays written by cyclists who detail
their unnatural love for their bikes.

Two famous 100 mile bike rides are fast approaching and both are staged in the Feliciana area just north of Baton Rouge. Make plans to ride with a well organized group ride. Traditionally both rides have seen lots of riders and a good number of fast paced boys and girls from the week-day riding romps. Either way, there will be fast folks and slow folks at these rides.

The 2004 Indian Creek Triathlon in Rapides Parish registration is now open via active.com
We checked out Indian Creek last week and it is looking good. Officials drew
down the lake last winter, so the hydrilla problem is virtually non-existent. The beach area has been nicely extended as well. I hear John Deshotel is among the camping out bunch and will be doing a pre-event gumbo for all those in the camp site. Is that right?
I'm not going to send as many race applications as I have done in the past,
so I would appreciate it if you could pass the word around.
