Don't forget this Saturday's Mardi Gras Mambo 10km starting from Catfish Town in downtown Baton Rouge. See
http://www.nextelmardigrasmambo10k.net/home.html for details. There's a big carnival parade on Friday night before the race in the Southdowns area of Baton Rouge and Saturday's race ends with plenty of time to see the downtown Baton Rouge Spanish Town Parade.
What a week of mourning over the loss of professional Italian cyclists Marco
Pantani. If you've watched any of the professional bike races like the Tour
de France, you've seen Pantani. He was fast, tough, competitive, and brutal
as a mountain climber and hated his nick name of "elephant ears" because of
his big ears. He was no doubt one of the most colorful figures in
professional bike racing. He was found dead in a locked hotel room in a
resort area. For more information on the circumstances leading up to his
death, go to www.velonews.com .
Check out this site. It lists triathlons by state and also by Iron or
half-Iron distance. Go to http://trifind.com/
I'm looking for a corps of physically strong volunteers who can help at the
March 6th Race for the Cure set for downtown Baton Rouge at the Old
Governor's Mansion on North Boulevard. Call or email me if you can help. I
only need your help for a few specific tasks from 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (the
race starts at 8:30 a.m.). Of course if you care to work longer, that's okay,
too.
I hear it was bit slippery at the Valentine's Day two-person, team time trial in Jackson, LA. Congrats to the brave cyclists who dared take on the course and the Feliciana hills.
Does anyone know LSU vet school student Kim Snedden's email or U.S. mail address? I need
it. I believe she lives in Baton Rouge.
There will once again be a Eunice Rotary Zydeco Triathlon. The date is set on April 17, 2004 at 8 a.m. at the local LSU campus swimming pool. It's a 150 meter swim, 10-mile bike and 2-mile run. For information contact, Zeb Stearns zstear@... 337/546-6646. Online registration http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1116104
Baton Rouge's Purple & Gold Triathlon (sometimes it's called the Tiger
Triathlon) held on the LSU campus is indeed happening, but not on the
original date as posted. It will take place the week before the Louisiana
Triathlon at New Roads on April 17 and swimmers will use the natatorium
instead of the Special Olympics Pool. Stay tuned for details or call
225/578-8371 for details or go to lsu.edu/recsportsl.edu.
Baker, a town right outside Baton Rouge, announced its "Take a Run on Thw
Wild Side" 5km, which takes place at the East Baton Rouge Parish Zoo on
March 27. For information, contact Aristead Clayton, Buffalo Festival Race,
P.O. Box 707, Baker, LA 70714. Attached is a copy of the flyer.
Local Boy Does "Good", Staging American Olympic Trials for Triathlon Event
From Bill Burke [bb@...]
Premier Event Management based in Metairie is proud to be selected to
produce and host the first Olympic event ever in the state of Hawaii. The
Olympic Triathlon Trials from Honolulu, Hawaii, will be the first Olympic
Trials event for American athletes trying to make the 2004 Summer Olympic
Team. Our bid to have this event host a World Cup Triathlon before the
Olympic Games has been approved. This will make the Honolulu Triathlon one of only four
events in the world on the international calendar prior to the end of
qualifying for the Olympic Summer Games from Athens, Greece this August.
In other ITU News mentioned in this same update, Premier Event Management
was selected in November, 2003 to produce and host the 2005 ITU Age Group
Triathlon World Championships from Honolulu, Hawaii. This event is
scheduled for Oct. 8th and 9th, 2005 and will be held just one week
before the Ironman World Triathlon Championships and just two weeks before
the Exterra World Triathlon Championship from the island of Maui.
Thanks to each athlete and sponsor for your support over the last 11 years.

With all the names in Louisiana multisporting today, we have come to realize
that in print publishing we will miss a few folks despite our best efforts
in recognizing folks and their achievements in the year. Good or bad right
or wrong, we again had a few problems in the rankings and we apologize for
our errors in our printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. Listed as an female honorable mention was Kelley
Morvant. Problem is Morvant of Acadiana is actually a male and not a female. Also, my partner
Chuck Owen of Bossier City noted in an article that Bo Bo Anderson is
Louisiana's only pro triathlete and calls came in reminding me that Terry
Butz of Lafayette is also a pro triathlete. I've included in this
enewsletter a few notes I got in response to this year's printed edition of
the Louisiana Multisport Report.
I apologize, too, for allowing Jon Anderson to include without permission
Malcolm Schuler's photos in his ad to promote the Tim Cappo Rouge-Roubaix
bike race. He was not credited for the photos used in the ad either and we
hope that this note will serve as a credit. I hope you all can enjoy
Schuler's photos that have been posted on Anderson's Rouge-Roubaix ad for
the last year.
Don't Forget the "Mature" Age Groups in Rankings
From John W. Lutes
As a long-term triathlon veteran of 20 years, I have always enjoyed your
Louisiana Multisport Report on Louisiana triathletes and duathletes. I have always
enjoyed seeing myself and my friends ranked in AG (age group) rankings, sometimes we
have even been in the top three.
As I am turning 60 this year, I was somewhat disappointed in not finding any
rankings above 55-59 in both men and women. My plans are to keep doing this
sport as long as I possibly can, and I feel somewhat slighted that as I look
forward to the "Golden Years" from 60 and up, there will no longer be
rankings for us.
Perhaps this is a one-time omission, but I sincerely hope you will resume
the rankings of the older athletes in future publications. Just because we
are older and slower, we feel we are just as important to the sport as the
youngsters. I am currently out of town, if your message is urgent, please
contact John
Schiller.
(Editor's note: There were none in these categories who qualified for a ranking, according to our data.)
Left Out of Louisiana Multisport Report Rankings?
From Sherry Mockler
I hope your "off season" was filled with a lot of long bikes, runs and
swims!
My children just brought in the mail with the yearly Louisiana Multisport
Report. In looking through the rankings, I believe I may have been left off
of the list some how. I competed in six races last year -- all in Louisiana.
My first race was the LSU race in March where I came in first in my age
group (40 -44) and 4th (I believe) overall. My next race was the Louisiana
Triathlon and again I came in first in my age group and I think fourth
overall. I beat Dawn Vick in New Roads who was ranked first in her age group
for this last racing season. I raced in three other races last spring --
T-gator twice and Abitaman in June. I raced very well, again placing first
in my age group and second overall in two of them. In Abitaman in June, I
was first masters female beating Susan Boudreaux. I am just wondering if I
was left out, if my name is spelled wrong, or if there is just that great of
a group of 40-44 year old women that I did not even get honorable mention.
I realize that you are very busy at work and planning the Baton Rouge Race for the Cure 5km and the Louisiana
Triathlon, but if you have a moment and would look into this and let me
know, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time and consideration!
From the Editor
Wow, I can't believe there may be another Sherry Mockler tangle again this
year.I fear that the Louisiana Multisport Report is cursed when dealing with
your name somehow.
It's like we've gotten things tangled once and now there's some sort of
mystical future that leaves us bound to complicate things further by missing
you whenever your name is or should be listed. I am still checking to see
how we may have missed you this year. I know we keep saying we are sorry,
but believe me when I tell you I am truly and deeply sorry that we may have
missed you in the rankings.
For what it's worth we send out email after email of rough drafts of
rankings, dates, details, etc. on our printed list just so we can check,
recheck and then check again in the best way we know and have time to do so
and we incredibly still miss stuff. We actually make a share of phone calls
to folks to check our list as well. We do lots on this project while trying
to keep our regular full-time jobs and care for our families at the same
time as well. I am learning there are still lots of people who don't have or use email.
Let me emphatically exclaim that my one and only goal is to recognize
Louisiana multisporters doing Louisiana events in the biggest, flashiest
ways I know. There is never any intention whatsoever to purposefully leave
anyone out of the list -- especially people who may very well deserve to be
tops on the list.
Again, I am checking with my partner Chuck Owen to find out more about what
may have happened. Did you ever see the emailed drafts of the rankings in
some of my postings late in the year?
Hate to See BR Beach Marathon Date Move to December
From Joe Wills
It is a shame if the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon has been moved to conflict
with one of our area's best half marathons (Acadiana in Lafayette) and the
numerous well-run marathons and ultra-marathons held in our region in
December. I hope they can pick up the numbers from those committed to the
Baton Rouge Corporate Cup 5km but, with some notable exceptions, most our
distance runners were already choosing the BR Beach Marathon over the Baton
Rouge (Port Allen?) Corporate Cup 5km.
Louisiana Racers Getting Read for Adventure Races
From Dave Poleto
We've got some exciting races happening in south Louisiana, as well
as a national championship at Fontainebleau State Park on Oct. 9th. This
race series includes Ralph Morton's Atchafalaya Basin race.
LaAdventureRacing, L.L.C. announced it will be hosting
the 2004 USARA Sprint Adventure Race National Championships in New
Orleans. This will coincide with the Louisiana Adventure
Racing Series that begins on March 13th. Check out
www.LaAdventueRacing.com for more details.
To qualify, teams must complete one USARA-sanctioned sprint
adventure race to be eligible to compete in the 2004 USARA Sprint
Adventure Race National Championship. There will be co-ed, male,
female, and co-ed masters divisions. Co-ed masters are defined by all
members being age 40 and better.
The 2004 USARA Sprint Adventure Race National Championship will
consist of three-person teams. Download an entry form at
www.LaAdventureRacing.com, or at
www.USARA.com.
