The web site for Baton Rouge's 2004 Nextel Mardi Gras Mambo10km is set. Note
the site has a slight change from ".com" to ".net." The site is
NextelMardiGrasMambo10K.net. The race is Feb. 21 starting from downtown
Baton Rouge.
Race day entries for the March 6th Race for the Cure in Baton Rouge will not
be scored. Registrations have started rolling in earlier than ever for the
April 24 Louisiana Triathlon at New Roads. There is a 400-person field
limit. Bo Bo Anderson is adding a new award category to his Holy Toledo
Triathlon. At the mid-point in the race, racers may compete to see who can
eat the most tamales in the town of Zwolle and finish the race.
Big Meeting Wednesday, Jan. 21, on Alternative Transportation
From Robert Canfield RRCBRLA@...
The most important meeting in ART history will be held this coming Wednesday
at 7 p.m. at Baton Rouge's Bluebonnet Library. Mayor Bobby Simpson and two
other speakers will discuss transportation alternatives. If we are to show
the Mayor and others that we are more than a three or four person
organization, I ask that you attend. If ART is to be successful, we need to
make an impression. If pedestrian, bicycle and transit issues are to be
successful we need to show numbers. We have made a good deal of progress
with the Mayor and DPW in recent years. This is our chance to keep that
momentum going or to bring it to an end. For more information, call
225/293-9609 or 225/205-7115

Rouge Roubaix Bike Race Set for the Felicianas on March 7
From Salty Galvis
The Rouge Roubaix Race course is a 100-mile course, with approximately 16
miles of the course covering dirt and gravel road in three sections. The
first section is really a dirt and gravel section that comes at mile 25 and
is approximately nine and a half miles long over rolling hills.
The second section is primarily a dirt section that comes at mile 67, is
about three miles long, and features three climbs, one of which is one-mile long,
and all three of which are probably at a 10 percent grade. That
section also has some sandy stretches at the bottoms of the descents that
require you to keep rolling and to be in a small gear before starting up the
next climb in order to stay upright. The last section is also a primarily a
dirt section that comes at mile 83, is three and a half miles long, includes
some long (from 0.3 to 0.6 mile) climbs that are probably in the area of a
15 percent grade, and includes at least one descent that has a 90-degree
right turn near the bottom of the descent.
The dirt and gravel sections of the course require some pretty good
bike-handling skills, and sometimes even good cyclists go down in the dirt
or sandy descents. Many people have to walk their bikes up some of the
climbs on the last two dirt/gravel sections. The climbs are steep enough
that you would like to stand on the pedals, but if you do, you lose all
traction on the rear wheel and just spin in the dirt. Nevertheless, road
bikes are by far the preferred vehicles, since 84 miles of the course are on
paved roads.
I wouldn't use 19- or 23-cm. tires or delicate racing tires. I use 25-cm
sturdy tires, so that I can get more purchase on the dirt sections. And I
carry at least three spare tubes (although I've had only one flat in doing
the race twice, and that was on one of the paved roads.). Oh yeah, the paved
roads have some pretty good hills, too.
If you're gong to race the course, be advised that the finish line is at the
top of a one-km climb (on a paved but rough road). And then just for good
measure, you have to ride three and a half miles from the finish back to the
start at the St. Francisville Hotel on the Lake.
The course is beautiful, and for those who aren't racing there's a store
(the Pond Store) available at mile 33.5 (at the end of the first dirt/gravel
section) and again at mile 70 (at the end of the second dirt section. For
those who are racing, there are feed zones located at mile 47 and mile 76.
I try to make it a point to ride at Red Bluff several times before Rouge
Roubaix, because I need the conditioning in the legs to survive the climbs
on the Rouge Roubaix course.
I encourage anyone who's interested to do the Rouge Roubaix Race/Ride. It's
a great experience. I'm planning to do it for the third time this year. For

Baton Rouge Boys Finish Well at Houston Marathon
From Ken Hoffstetter via Ben Cherbonnier

(These two guys were coached by Baton Rouge personal trainer Miyo Chun-Witt)
The weather was great for running the Houston Marathon. We had 50 degrees
with overcast skies. But it was definitely more windy than I would have
preferred. My friend Linn Fink and I worked together to fight it.He ran
2:57.16, I ran 3:01.30. I was on 2:58 pace until mile 24. the underpasses
got me. Going up those hills my claves felt as if they were on fire. I never
felt pain like that before. I was very happy with my overall race
performance. Linn fished 83rd, and I was 111.
For Sale
From Will Cheramie
For anyone looking for a second hand track bike, I am selling my 2003
Bianchi Pista Concept (frame, fork, seatpost). The frame has a 57cm
top tube and is made of 7000 series aluminum, the fork is carbon
fiber and uses a 1 1/8" integrated headset (included).
This is the frame I used for the 2002 & 2003 Collegiate Track
Nationals, 2003 SEC Conference Track Championship and in local
races. The frame has a black matte finish with celeste lettering.
There is one very small scratch on the seat tube and another on the
side of the top tube, otherwise the bike is in like new shape.
(4.8lbs frame, fork, headset, very long seatpost, headset spacers & top
cap)
This was my bike for time trials, so I used a smaller frame (it would
likely fit anyone 5'10" or taller, depending on your proportions.
I'll take $450 for everything listed above. Should someone need other parts
to build the bike, I have that as well (wheels, etc).
++++++++++
That's it from here. Bless God, America.
