Club South Runners Left Overs on the Levee 5km

Phi Mu 10km for Children’s Miracle Network
--8 a.m. in Milton near Lafayette (see lafayettefitness.org)
Multisport coach and writer Joe Friel is coming to Louisiana! Diane and Mark
Tarver have managed to get the multisport guru into Sulphur, LA at their
shop called Tri-Specialties on Feb. 7. The cost for the clinic is $75 and
seating is limited. Folks from all over the region are coming, so if you're
thinking about going, you better not think too long. The seminar is all day
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 888/316-4214 or email
diane@... for details.
Will Cheramie of Baton Rouge reports that there is a great multi-page article
in the new Velo News about all of the velodromes in North America, and the
state of track cycling in the US as well. Judging by the looks of some of these tracks, Cheramie reports, Baton
Rouge really has an under-appreciated facility.
I get a few folks asking from time to time where I get the quotes I used to
start each week's enewsletter. I get them from all over -- Runner's World,
Sports Illustrated magazine, Velo News, the Franklin Planner, friends,
internet sites, etc.

Ride for a Cause Bringing Cyclists to Ireland, Italy
From Rob
Here's just a quick note to let you all know that Ride For A Cause has
released its schedule of cycling events for 2004. These Fundraising Rides
take place in Italy and Ireland and send 100 percent of donations back to
the beneficiaries. The cost is $1,000.00 for the week and covers just about
everything while you are on the ride, with the exception of airfare. The
Italy ride is 30-50 miles a day with some killer 15 percent grade hills and
the Ireland ride averages 50-70 miles a day with rolling hills. One of the
things I like best about this organization is that not only does 100 percent
of all the donations go back to the beneficiary, but you can also designate
a beneficiary of your choosing so we can send money to a organization in our
area and it can be any 501(c)(3) organization we choose.
The website is WWW.RFAC.ORG if you want to check it out.
Cycle Randonneuring Comes to Lousiaina
From Pat Horchoff [mailto:pat.horchoff@...]
Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This
style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is
paramount. When riders participate in randonneuring events, they are
part of a long tradition that goes back to the very beginning of the
sport of cycling in France. Friendly camaraderie, not competition, is
the hallmark of randonneuring.
On Feb. 21st Randonneuring will be coming to south Louisiana. As
part of its country ride series the CCC will help host a 200km brevet
leaving out of the Koop Road station just off of Highway 59 near Interstate
12. The route will be a simple out and back route going through Abita
Springs, Bush and Folsom before returning along most of the same
roads. It will be an unsupported ride and participants will be asked
to follow the rules for Randonneuring. Details for brevets can be
found on the web at www.rusa.org .
The ride will start at 6 a.m. and must be completed within 13.5
hours as outlined in the rules. Lights will be required since both
the ride start and finish could be in the dark. A simple bike
inspection will be held as part of the sign in procedure. Maps, queue
sheets and control cards will be available at the ride start. Please
arrive early for sign in as the ride will depart promptly at 6 a.m.
This will be an unsupported ride so come prepared. We will be using
the convenience stores in Bush and Folsom as control points and will
pass other convenience stores along the way.

Statewide Bicycle, Pedestrian Summit Set for May in New Orleans
From Louis "Salty" Galvis
This is something all cyclists who ride in the New Orleans area or in
Louisiana for that matter should seriously consider
attending in early May. Call me for more information at 985/727.2345 or
504/576.2050.
E-mail: lgalvis@...
From Karen Parsons kparsons@...
I would like to ask each of you to submit names, titles, and physical
address/e-mail/phone/fax contact information for yourselves and anyone else
you think would be interested in attending the first ever Statewide Bicycle
and Pedestrian Safety Summit to be held in New Orleans in May, 2004.
(Unfortunately in many cases I just don t have complete or current addresses
for each of you.) This event will be sponsored by the Federal Highway
Department, Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, and the Louisiana
Department of Transportation and Development. The Regional Planning
Commission is working with the sponsors to build a broad program covering
enforcement, education and engineering issues for bike and pedestrians. It
will be a one day conference. The date and location are still under
construction.
Please pass this news on within your cycling, walking and professional
organizations and send back names and contact info to me as soon as
possible. We are not sure how many to make room for as it is the first state
and federally sponsored event in Louisiana focusing on non-motorized
transportation. I am building a local list for our region and whoever is on
the list will receive a notice of the conference. We are also looking at
the potential for having display tables for bicycle shops, equipment, and
related issues such as health and urban planning. If you are interested,
please let me know. There will be some associated cost for a table. Some
form of bike security will be provided for those who will attend via a
bicycle. A novel thought!
Getting this level attention directed at non-motorized transportation has
been quite an uphill battle. Thanks to many of you it is happening. I would
like to see a good showing of interested parties from the healthcare
community, law enforcement, schools and universities, bicycle shops,
advocates, as well as urban planners and engineers. I am excited to see
some momentum building at last and hope you and your colleagues will
consider attending. Please consider making an announcement of this safety
event in your newsletters, meetings and bulletin boards once the date and
location are nailed down.
As a footnote, many of you have received notification of upcoming Orleans
Parish public meetings for the Transportation Element of the City s Master
Plan. If not, please read the attachment. I encourage you to attend to
support safe cycling facilities for all skill level bicycle riders in
Orleans Parish and transportation solutions that encourage a sustainable
environment. For more information, call 504/568-6620.

Steve Locke Resigns as USAT Executive Director
From www.slowtwitch.com)
USA Triathlon is without the executive director its known for most of its
existence. On Jan. 12 Steve Locke resigned as the chief executive of an
organization he's led for 13 years.
Locke had one full year left on a management contract, and by resigning
presumably gives up a significant pay package. His reasons for resigning are
the management style of the current board of directors, and the decision of
that board to uphold the recent election. Locke wrote, "It is incredible to
me that this board can rationalize an acceptance of an election so flawed as
an authentic election."
Locke leaves a much stronger federation than he inherited in 1991, with
better than $2 million in cash and equivalents, well over 1000 sanctioning
races, and 47,000 annual members. Locke's letter announcing his resignation
is below:
Good afternoon,
Today I tendered my resignation from USA Triathlon as Executive Director
effective immediately. I have rendered this resignation for several reasons.
Chief among them is a disagreement with the direction this Board is taking
and the ethics they are displaying.
In 1981, I was initiated to triathlon by participating in several events; in
1983, I was involved in creating a race management company which originated
and conducted around 20 events a year (5 annually were multisport); in
December of 1991 I assumed the position of Executive Director of the then
Triathlon Federation USA and now USA Triathlon. Over the years,I have
developed quite an investment in our sport both personally and from a
business perspective.
In 1991 when I assumed the Executive Director position we were in deficit
spending. Our races sanctioned hovered around 375, and our membership was
11,000. Today our budget is in excess of $5,000,000, our races sanctioned
are over 1,100, and our membership base is 47,000. Further, in 1991 we did
not have a national teams program, and now we have what is considered to be
one of the best within the Olympic family. We also have the USA Triathlon
National Training Center which has incredible potential for development of
the sport for both age group athletes and the elite athletes of the future.
And, finally, over the years we have been able to set aside a substantial
financial fund for the inevitable rainy day. I take pride in all of the
above as I was intimately involved in every project along the way and many
more not mentioned.
I regretfully resign the position of Executive Director. I do not agree with
the direction that this Board is taking, the micromanaging of staff they are
pursuing, and, finally, the decision last week to overlook the obvious
deficiencies and violations of bylaw processes in the recent Board election.
In a day when USA Triathlon enforces rule violations against age group and
elite athletes within the letter of the "law", it is incredible to me that
this Board can rationalize an acceptance of an election so flawed as an
authentic election.
As I leave this responsibility, I want to thank all of you for your
kindness; for helping me to learn in this job; and for supporting USA
Triathlon consistently through the years. I ask that you continue to support
USA Triathlon as we have an organization with a superb staff; a staff that
works incredibly long hours to provide a high level of quality service to
our constituencies.
Many thanks to all of you.
