GiGi's Jennings 5km Resolution Run

Attached is the last version I have of 2004 fitness events which I will include in the printed version of the Louisiana Multisport Report. I saw some email exchanges challenges the accuracy of bike race dates, so I would sure appreciate folks' review and final word on the list. Thanks for all of you who take time to help us make as comprehensive a fitness date list as possible. I appreciate your feedback.

Well it's been good to be running with lots more regularity. Thank God for physical therapists! I started my running year off with Club South Runners Resolution Run and followed with a friendly bike ride down River Road in the greater Baton Rouge area. It was so good to be on the bike. It was nice having Austin residents Melinda and  Jason Sager along for the New Year's Day ride. We got back just in time to see all the start of the holiday football games.

There was a good turnout for the low-key resolution run. While I enjoyed my run with good friends, I sure did love the way Baton Rouge race director Charlie Daniels used to put on the event to start the new year. But I salute those who put on whatever kind of events wherever!

The weather between Christmas and New Year's couldn't have been better for outdoor workouts! Now the chilled air has returned and that makes the health club scene a bit more attractive. Running in cold weather is easier than riding -- much less swimming  -- in cold weather.

Publications Report Lots More Folks Running Marathons
From Daniel Bourgeois
According to a recent health and fitness publication, more than 450,000 people finished a marathon in 2002, up almost 50 percent during the last decade. In those same ten years, participation in U.S.
triathlons rose from 65,000 to 180,000, with more than 10,600 participating
in Ironman triathlons. There was an even bigger jump in health-club
memberships: According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, 36.3
million Americans belonged to a gym in 2002, up a whopping 75 percent from
1990. The article goes on to say that one of the biggest problems was
overtraining! They provided an event guide- how many events you could do in a year, and
how much rest you would  need between each.

GPS Said to Help Multisporter Training
From Bob Hodges
Here’s some info on what I believe is a pretty cool GPS package. It can be used for tracking performance and statistics for any ride. Techno-geeks like me love this stuff. I copied this from an Adventure Cycling e-mail newsletter. It does a lot more than just speed and distance. Check it out.

Endless Pursuit, billed as the world's first GPS-enabled multisport training system, is a "web-based software that turns a lightweight, handheld GPS into a nice tool to measure, log, and understand your outdoor workouts." The creators say that the portable, wireless system can be used for any activity in which precise speed and distance count, such as cycling, running, and cross-country skiing. (We can already hear the post-ride banter: "We rode 72.45 miles." "No, we rode 72.45 miles and three inches.") Check it out at:

New Orleans Area Marathoners Run in Mobile
While many were trying to recover from
the holiday overeating, hundreds of runners traveled
to Mobile, AL for the First Light Marathon. The race was
attended by quite a few New Orleans area runners.

Katie Carrona was the sixth female with a 3:45 finish and
Brian Smith finished fifth overall with an impressive time
of 2:50.

Johnny Frost's speed work paid off for a finish of
3:31. Congratulation to Marty Langan who finished with a
time of 4:14. Marty was tailed by Chip Marz with a 4:18 finish.
Jack Hayes cruised in at 5:27.
Second Rough Draft Posted of  2003 Top Duathletes
From Chuck Owen of Bossier City
This is the second rough draft -- very rough draft -- of the 2003 listing of top duathletes in the state. I wold appreciate it if folks would take a look at the list below and help us make sure we've got the information as accurate as we can get it for the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. Did I say this was a rough draft?
Our aim is to make sure this only includes Louisiana residents who raced in Louisiana events. Of course, we want to spell folks' names right and we want to make sure we have them in the right age group for the 2003 racing season. Any help you could offer on any of these variables would be appreciated. Email me at caodeploy@... or Kenny Dunaway at kdunaway@... with corrections or questions.
