"The more I talk to athletes, the more convinced I become that the method of training is relatively unimportant. The training method you choose is just the one that suits you best. The important thing is the attitude of the athlete."
Herb Elliot, 1500-meter Olympic Champion in 1960
Lots of holiday workouts posted on local websites and even a few New Year's Day races going on, notably the New Orleans Jackson Day 9km set for Sunday, Jan. 4 on the day of the Sugar Bowl football game. Also, Club South Runners has resurrected Baton Rouge's Resolution Run on Thursday, Jan. 1. I know there must be other New Year's Day fitness events going on around the state. For years the Crawfish Masters swim group has met on Jan. 1 to do some workout using a variation of the number of the new year as a basis for workouts. Check them out.
Which Louisiana fitness/multisporter web site was the best or among the best
for 2003? Give me your thoughts on who was the best web master, who had the
best web site, who had the best information, the fastest posted information
or whatever. I'd like to have a little note in the printed edition of the
Louisiana Mulisport Report about the state's top fitness/multisport internet
web sites. Let your voice be heard!
Chuck Owen of Bossier City is busy finalizing details on the 2003 Louisiana duathlete rankings for the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. We hope to post those early, preliminary rough drafts in the next week. Stay tuned for the early duathlete drafts.
I didn't get many north Louisiana nominations for multisporter of the year for the annual printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. This may be your last chance to submit in 30 to 35 words folks you believe should be considered as the state's multisporter of the year. I'm talking about all - around multisporters, not just triathletes or just duathletes or just runners. I'm looking for folks who do adventure racing, roller blading, etc. Let me hear from you north Louisiana folks.
Attached is another rough draft of 2004 fitness dates I continue to collect for the Louisiana Multisport Report. I'm thinking there must be more events set or at least tentative out there that need to be included in our annual printed edition.
I hope all of you "uninjured" multisporters are appreciating your workouts. I for one have fought problems that prevented me from running like I wanted. Thankfully, I'm back on the roads running some good distance with a fair share of intensity. But I have to give some props to physical therapist Gloria Wall of Baton Rouge. Sick and tired of complaining, I finally paid her a visit to professionally assess whatever running problems I've been fighting. After about two weeks of all sorts of diagnosis, I have to tell you I haven't felt so good on my runs. Of course the never-ending theme for running as a late 40 year old is stretch stretch and stretch some more. Pilates and yoga wold be nice, too. I'm trying not to get too excited and do too much.
Holidays are good times to see folks back in town for the holidays. I've run into lots of folks around the LSU lakes and at the local health clubs. I hate that so many move from Louisiana, but it's so good that they come back to see relatives. For example, I ran with pro triathlete Chris Boudreaux, now living in Clermont, FL and he's doing great. He slowed down to a jog as he ended a two-hour run. It was great seeing Houston resident Paul Daniels and Mississippi residents Leigh and Mike Kirtley at the Shelly Ripple Johnston wedding. All three were and are great multisporters who set high competitive standards in multisporting across the country. Paul's wife is the sister of Chilean triathlete Crisitian Bustos, who is reportedly doing very well in South America. Mike Abshire of Baton Rouge said he ran into pro cyclist Trent Rives. Mike said Rives is apparently withdrawing from intensive competitive cycling.

Cyclists Needed for Jan. 15th St. Tammany Parish Meeting
From Louis Leonard "Salty" Galvis
Action is needed on Thursday, Jan.15th, at the St. Tammany Parish Council
meeting. We need as many cyclists as can make it to show up at the meeting
to oppose the council's proposed new Tangipahoa-type cycling ordinance
discussed by Bob Hodges below. The meeting will take place at the parish
building on Koop Drive (next to the Tammany Trace HQ/caboose), beginning at
6 p.m. (Unfortunately, I will be in the middle of a trial and will not be
able to attend the meeting myself.)
For those of you St. Tammany Parish residents who want to contact your
respective council members, you can find their contact info at:
http://www.stpgov.org/departments/council/Councilmen.html
If the ordinance is passed, our group training rides will become much more
troublesome to organize, since we will be bound by the requirements of
obtaining a permit, posting the route in a newspaper of local circulation 48
hours in advance of the rides, and arrange for police or other security
protection for the ride.

An ordinance will be up for vote on Jan 15th before the
St. Tammany Parish Council. The ordinance basically re-iterates the
current laws regarding bicycle usage on public highways but adds the
following:
1. Parish permit required for any ride with 12 or more riders (permit
cost is $25).
2. Permit contains date, # of riders, person in charge with phone #,
route.
3. Route and ride to be announced and published in any local newspaper
48 hours before the ride.
4. "Any organized or unorganized ride will have proper police or
security protection on the day or days of the event"
Like Tangipahoa Parish, the ordinance seeks to make any group ride such
a hassle that they will stop.
A committee was formed on the northshore several months ago with a
representative from the multisport ranks, NOBC (me), and CCC (John
Supan) to begin working with the parish to address cyclist/motorist
issues. We have made contact with the parish president Kevin Davis and
hope to have a meeting with him on Jan. 5th to clearly voice our
opposition to this anti-cycling legislation.
What we need from CCC is to be prepared to attend the Jan 15th meeting
so there is a large presence of cyclists to make the council realize
that we have voting power. We are also spreading the word with NOBC and
the multisport community to have their people there also. This affects
everyone who rides a bike in St. Tammany.
While we can get upset about this, this may be a great opportunity to
educate the parish about just how many people ride, the diversity of the
cycling population, and also the benefits that cycling can bring to the
parish.
