The 97th running of the Jackson Day Race in New Orleans comes on quite an interesting day for Louisiana sports fans. The Jan. 4th event will be run on the morning of the same day the national collegiate football championship will be played in the Sugar Bowl. Wow, LSU and Oklahoma football fanatics mixing it up with runners: what a combination! This is one of the country's longest continually staged road races. For more information, check out runNOTC.org.
It's that time of year when lots of fitness clubs/groups are getting together for annual parties where folks eat way too much. The way-too-used-comment "I've never seen you in clothes before" gets a little old by the time New Year gets here. But it's fun to be with fitness folks and actually talk without having to worry about breathing or tripping into a pot hole in the darkness of Louisiana's winter nights. I went to the Baton Rouge-based Club South Runners party and I truly had a good time wallowing in my growing sentimentality as I continue to age. It's so good to see fitness folks in a social setting whom you've known for years. I got to catch up with lots of folks who for various reasons aren't in the racing scene as much, but are still very much into the fitness and good health.
I need fitness event dates ASAP for the annual printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. Let me hear from you folks. Specifically I need the confirmed date, the name of the event, the key contact phone number and an email address. I've included another revised attachment showing what fitness dates I've been give at this point.

Congratulations to Scott Guidry of Shreveport for being the first to officially register for the 2004 Louisiana Triathlon at New Roads. He may have to get a door prize for the first to sign up for Pointe Coupée Parish triathlon.
Bo Bo Anderson, now residing in Opelousas, set March 28th, 2004 as the date for the state's newest triathlon. He's putting it together with Brad Colwell, creator of Indian Creek Triathlon in Rapides Parish. The race is planned for the Cypress Bend Resort on Toledo Bend. Plans call for a one-mile wetsuit swim, a 40-mile bike with some hills, and a 10-mile run that's over 50 percent off road (and hilly). He's calling it the Holy Toledo Triathlon Challenge. Check out bobozone.com for details.
I hear the turnout was low on a chilly day for the Club South Runners Half Marathon in Baton Rouge. How did the Swamp Stomp Half Marathon go. Bill Knox of Baton Rouge said the annual Sunmart 50km and 50-mile trail run in east Texas was good and not too muddy, despite late Friday rain and drizzling conditions most of the race. I understand Susan Boudreaux of Mandeville went as well.
Word is that there will be a big contingent at the Rock 'n Roll Marathon in Arizona in mid-January. Any other marathon reports out there?
Next time you are in the piney woods of central Louisiana, visiting your redneck brother-in-law or whatever, check out the state's newest running store -- Run Wild. It's in Alexandria on Jackson Street next to Red River Cyclery and close to Semolina's restaurant, the fancy pasta eatery. Operating the store are Don and Elizabeth Cassano, who are runners, multisporters and hard-core fitness enthusiasts. Don is a PT who has studied under note shoe fit guru Gloria Wall of Baton Rouge.
Dallas White Rock Marathon Report
While everyone else was shopping or partying, some folks were running the Dallas White Rock
Marathon. Monique Valentino was quite impressive with her 4 hour and 26-minute finish after a painful "Superman-flying" fall at the mile seven and eight area, which resulted in bloody hands, knees
and elbow, and a severely damaged ego. She was able to
quickly pull herself together to finish the race in
her second-best ever time.
Bob Ryan slipped over to Dallas to finish the race
shortly ahead in 4:19. Where was Doc Bob when Monique
needed medical help?
Other GNO (greater New Orleans) area finishers:
Rann Upton (Mandeville) 3:01
Bill Fontan (Mandeville) 3:01
Clay Pendleton (New Orleans) 3:51
Denis McCrea (Destrehan) 3:55
Hally McCrea (Destrehan) 4:34
Mary Lou Van Teylingen (New Orleans) 5:20
Phil Simms, 3:42
