"Everyone is an athlete. But some of us are training, and some of us are not." Dr. George Sheehan
Wow, I haven't seen so many email reports on a fitness event as I've seen for last weekend's Ironman Florida Triathlon held in Panama City. No doubt, it you're looking to get motivated for ultra-distance races, you need to go at least watch one of these events. Lots of Louisiana triathletes participated and did very well at the race. I am utterly amazed at how fast these events fill up. A day or two after each of the major Ironman-distance triathlons, these events are full for the next year's event.
Congratulations, too, to all those who helped put on or raced the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon and half marathon. There was a great turnout with lots of folks signing up the night before the event. It was a warm day, but the 6 a.m. start helped keep things a bit cooler. Word is that the event will be held in early December of 2004.
I was pedaling my bike around the BR Beach Marathon for the first half of the race and then drove over to see the new venue for the Baton Rouge Corporate Cup 5km. There was again a big turn out for the event. While there were some challenges in moving the event to the West Bank of the Mississippi River, folks still turned out for a good race. I then went back to the downtown area of Baton Rouge on what was a busy day throughout the area and found it dead as could be. Interesting.
Anyone seen any results from the off-road bike races supposedly held in Ruston over the weekend?
I hope everyone got to read my favorite running philosopher George Sheehan's last unpublished column in the most recent edition of Runner's World. It's a classic inspirational piece on "Why I Run."
Keep sending in those 2004 fitness event dates for the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. The calendar is packing up pretty good already for 2004. Attached is my latest draft of events I've compiled so far. Don't let your favorite fitness event be left out of this year's printed edition, due out in late January or early February.

Mississippi Planning New Cycling Stage Race in May
From Bill Tramel
From Bill Tramel
I wanted to get this out now to let all of you know there will be a new stage race in the area this spring. It will be called Giro d'Brandon and will be located near Jackson, MS. on May 15-16, 2003. As of now, there will be two races: a criterium in downtown Brandon, MS (about 10 miles east of Jackson) on Saturday, May 15th, and a road race on Sunday May 16th, with the start/finish at Shiloh Park in Brandon.
The race promoter is Gary Gray, who has recently opened a new bike shop in the Brandon area (Pro Bike - 601/936-4899; probikeguy@...). My involvement is that I came up with the routes, and am helping Gary with the races wherever he needs it. We have already met with the Brandon mayor; he and the city administration are very enthusiastic about holding the races. We have a lot of planning and stuff to do between now and then, but I think you'll like it. I’ll send out more information about the races as the time approaches, so stay tuned and go ahead and put May 15-16, 2003 on your racing calendar.
19th Annual Baton Rouge Corporate Cup Report
From Leslie Davis
There were some unique happenings this year at the Corporate Cup, including some participants that must be given special recognition. Can you believe that the team with the lowest overall score, LSU's Geology Dept. Purple Haze, included three men and a lady who are all over the age of the age of 40? How about the fact that our overall female winner, Leslie Corry, who is 40 years old was the third overall person to cross the finish line?
We think all of our participants are special and this year we were proud to have 81- year-old Naomi Little, a breast cancer survivor, and 68-year old Jimmy Taylor, all American football fullback on the race course. Companies with teams and individuals were in full array and it was one of our most incredible crowds! When you see 40- to 59-year-old men and women with lower scores than our 19 and under age groups, you understand why corporate wellness is moving quickly among the ranks of the baby boomers. Marion Robinson, Blake Bourgeois, Leslie Corry, Kenny Schexnayder, Chester Cedars and Patricia Sautrekban and Tom Campbell were all in the 40+ age range and won their respective age group categories. Fast behind them were Yvonne Lee Thomas, Doug Doremus and Carol Guerin who were also age group winners with great personal times in the 55+ age groups . Now, that's incredible!
The 19th annual Corporate Cup start was delayed 15 minutes in order to allow the two-mile back-up on the interstate to arrive, park and make it to the start-line so their times could be properly recorded. Sometimes you have to go with the flow of a new venue. Everyone was agreeable to the short delay and that is what is great about Corporate Cup participants. They always work as a team and that is why this event is my all-time favorite to coordinate. We have the best companies and participants of any event in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Each year the companies and participants prove that camaraderie and teamwork is their focus.
The 5th annual Corporate Wellness Award was presented to Entergy Louisiana for their ENSHAPE Wellness Pilot Program and BASF and Performance Contractors won the Participation Awards. The coveted t-shirt design contest winner was Turner Industries who designed a shirt incorporating a message of the "running sole" of Corporate Cup with the "teamwork soul" of their employees for a winning combination. So So Wildman of Exxon Mobil's Wellness Team and Gayle Carnahan of the Downtown Sheraton both won the Top Company Coordinator's Awards and were each presented with one of the coveted LSU Varsity Vests. Over 50 winners received awards and an additional 45 company representatives received door prizes for their efforts in coordinating their company's involvement.
Special thanks to over 100 individuals from West Baton Rouge and Baton Rouge that worked behind the scenes as sponsors, volunteers and liaisons to make this the smoothest and most successful Corporate Cup. "Going west" was the best decision we have made in many years with companies and participants both asking us to consider returning to the west side again next year for the 20th anniversary of the Corporate Cup. Mark your calendar now to be a part of next year's Corporate Cup on Nov. 6, 2004!
