at Fontainebleau State Park in St. Tammany Parish.
It was great seeing Baton Rouge running guru Jenni Peters leading her regular weekly clinic on running. There are lots of folks in the capital city area taking advantage of some great group coaching from Peters, an accomplished Olympic-level competitor herself. There were about 15 runners at her clinic last night, but some say there are as many as 20 to 25 on some Tuesday nights. For information on her informal clinics and group coaching, call her at 225/383-8419.
Atchafalya Adventure Race Report
From Laurence Cohen
My team won the 24-hour Atchafalaya Adventure race. Included in the team
were captain Brian Hudson, Dave Bogle was the third male and our woman was
Julie Standing. I would nominate her for multisport athelete of the year.
This young lady was on the winning adventure racing team for basically ever
big race in the state this year (as was Brian Hudson). The only race she did
not win was because I DNF'ed. She and Brian still finished first but were
scored unofficially. Julie is one of the toughest competitors I have ever
seen, male or female. Plus, she is as nice a person as you want to meet. Our
team was the first Louisiana team to win the Atchafalaya event.
Louisiana Runner Completes Irish Dublin Marathon
From Dawn Vick dvick@...
Thanks for your support for my marathon in Dublin had an awesome trip. The
country is beautiful but quite wet. I met some very interesting Irish
people and runners from all over the world. It was a tough marathon. I was
told it was flat - wrong! It was over half hills and steep ones at that.
One was a 30 grade hill that lasted about ten minutes. I, unfortunately,
didn't train for hills. They changed the course this year. The good -- it
was a gorgeous run and we had perfect weather. The bad -- we did not have
chips and it was one of the most unorganized starts I have ever seen. More
than 8,000 people got lined up and started the run together. Their were
even spectators taking pictures mixed in with the runners. I didn't even
cross the start line until 41/2 minutes past the gun. Then I walk/ran for
another 3 minutes. For people who know me well, I was quite frustrated at
the start. My time on my trusty Ironman watch was
3 hours 29 minutes and 40 seconds from the time I crossed the start line.
Then, I walked for another three minutes until I could finally get a run
going.
All in all, it was a fun race, albeit, a little frustrating. Next time, I
will train better for hills. They kicked my ass. My legs were so cramped by
mile 18 that I actually had to walk for a minute or so, then again at mile
23. Then, I could barely walk for two days. I was the first female and
second finisher for Joints in Motion (169 people). That was the group that I
went with. We raised more than $500,000 for the arthritis organization. I
may do this race again in the future.

Turkey Trotters Race Set on Northshore
From Jo Swan
I just wanted to invite everyone to participate in the Turkey Trotters Race
on the Northshore on Thanksgiving Day to benefit Silent Angels Program. Silent
Angels is a non-profit program making Christmas wishes come true for
deserving children in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. The race is put
on by the area district attorney and his family to raise donations or
collect gifts for these children. The Domestic Violence Division of the
office works hard taking the information, shopping for the gifts and
delivering them to the homes of these families.
Of course, everyone in the office becomes involved! For most of these
children, it is the only presents that they receive for Christmas. If you or
anyone you know would like to sponsor, participate or need further
information, please contact Joyce Winston or Janie Duke-McDaniel at
985/809-8363 or call the main line at the D.A.'s office 985/809-8383.
The 15th St. Flyers are also an incredible help with this event!! So,
please start spreading the word, and let's bring some love to these kids!
P.S. If you would like to request gifts for needy families that you may
know, you can do so anonymously. Just be sure to have the ages of the
children, address, clothes and shoe sizes for all mentioned.
