Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Oct. 29, 2003
"Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others." Robert
Louis Stevenson

Congratulations to the many Louisiana runners who completed the Washington,
D.C. Marine Corps Marathon. The next big "national" marathon I guess is in
New York City? Any marathon reports out there? Check out the attachment
which Joe Wills of Baton Rouge wrote. Congrats, too, to Louisiana
triathletes who did the Great Floridian Ironman. Below is a race report from
Ken St. Pé of Lafayette.
http://www.lafayettefitness.org/Commentary/2003_GFT_Report_Ken.htm

If You Did Ironman Hawaii in 2003....
Speaking of Ironman, Joseph M. Lee of Baton Rouge is compiling a list of
Louisiana residents who did Ironman-distance triathlons for the annual
Louisiana Multisport Report. He needs for those who did the Hawaiian Ironman
to let us know if they did the event since state designations of finishers
is not clear. Email me or Lee at
JLee@....

Some running event dates to remember:
Nov. 1 - Homerun for ALS 5km in Baton Rouge
Nov. 8 - Baton Rouge Beach Marathon
Nov. 8 - Baton Rouge Corporate Cup 5km (staged in Port Allen)
Nov. 15- Cajun Cup 10km in Lafayette
Dec.6 - Cajun Country Half Marathon in Lafayette
Dec. 14 - Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in Lake Charles

Have dates been set for the winter Snowflake Duathlons usually held in the
Shreveport area? I'm still collecting dates for the annual printed edition
of the Louisiana Multisport Report. Send them on to me ASAP.

The Baton Rouge Race for the Cure 5km is being organized for March 6th and
volunteers are needed. Call 225/324-9559 or email
eriekay@....

Don't forget the adventure race this weekend at Fontainebleau State Park in
Mandeville.

Final Mudbug Mayhem Off-Road Bike Race Set
From Darius Sampey
Well it's time for our final race of the season. Off-road bike race # 4 will
be held at Hooper Road Park in Baton Rouge. BRAMBA has done lots of great
work to the trails repairing some very eroded sections. The course is very
challenging with some tight technical sections and a couple of climbs that
will really challenge you. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the riders
meeting at 9:45 a.m. At 10 a.m., the experts go off first. Entry fee is $20;
no license required. Forecast temperatures are cool and should make for some
great racing conditions. So grab a friend and come out for some exciting MTB
racing action. For more information see our website at
www.bramba.org

Last Duathlon of 2003 Set for Belle Chasse
From Michael Burgess
The 2003 multisport season will be closing out soon with the staging of the
Bikes for Tykes Duathlon.
It's a two-mile run, followed by a ten-mile bike and ending with a two-mile
run. It will be one of the last opportunities to race (and score state
points for the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report) this
season. Post race activities include plenty of home cooked food, soft
drinks, adult beverages and unique awards.

The Bikes for Tykes Duathlon will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003
at Cypress Park in Belle Chasse. All proceeds from this event will go
towards helping the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Department buy toys for
needy local families for the Christmas season. In addition to this, if you
or someone you know has a used bike in fairly good shape to donate let me
know. Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Department does minor repairs to bikes to
give away during the holidays.

It has been a great year for multisport with even more events than last
year. Congratulations to those athletes that have trained and raced through
the year. For more information on the Bikes for Tykes Duathlon contact me at
504/361-1817,
Michael.Burgess@... or mikeyrunz@... .

Our last Adventure Race of the season is next weekend Saturday Nov. 1 at 9

miles, and kayak (boat, paddle, life jacket provided) one mile in this
gorgeous state park overlooking the Merimac River.  Expected finish times
between two to three hours. This is a team event with both team members

bike helmets, running shoes, and any food/water during the event.

Louisiana Multisporter Running for USAT Post
From Robert Sigerson
sigerson@...
One of the board members contacted me by e-mail to see if I would be
interested in running for the board.  After some thought, I threw my hat
in the ring today.  What a perverted thing to do.
It is a 2 year commitment but I don't think anyone from south Louisiana
has ever been on the board. I will let everyone know when the election
starts as I will need your
votes.

Recommendation for Lance Armstrong's New Book
From Melissa Kujawa
I read TDF winner Lance Armstrong's new book in a day. I couldn't put it
down. I am always motivated by him and since I'm getting ready for my first
Ironman, I needed the motivation. I think he is a class act and the greatest
athlete on the planet.

Bike Route Discussion on Trail from Minnesota to La. Set Friday
From Bruce Wickert
There is lots of interest in bicycle and trail facilities in the
state.  There is currently a partly completed trail that runs along
the Mississippi river from Minnesota to New Orleans.  Bill Keller, is
currently holding a meeting in New Orleans this Friday, Oct. 31 during the
day.

 25TH IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
 KAILUA KONA, HAWAII
 OCTOBER 18, 2003

4:00 a.m.  Alarm.  Regular breakfast.  4:45 a.m. into the car for the 2.8 mile drive to downtown.  Then, body marking.  There were 1758 athletes registered for the race and listed in the official race book, and thousands of volunteers.  When we took our bikes and race and bike bags to the transition areas the day before, we each had a volunteer wearing a green volunteer t-shirt to escort us to each area; there was a sea of volunteers. We checked bikes, pumped tires, visited our bike bags, and filed out to the swim start with our pre-swim bags.

The water entry point at Kona is a tiny postage stamp size beach that disappears when waves roll in and when it’s high tide.    It seemed like nobody wanted to get into the water.  I got in at 6:45 a.m. for the 7:00 race start.  The water was beautiful.  At that time, there were still at least a thousand athletes still on land, and the race start was 500 yards out in the bay.  We listened to the national anthem, and then a Hawaiian drum ceremony, and then the start cannon.  I swam well, I thought.  All of the swimmers around me seemed to have great technique, and I felt like we were making good time.  I had swum in an endless pool at the expo the day before with video taping and a Total Immersion coach looking on (I’m a Total Immersion convert), who said that I had good technique but a lazy right arm and invited me email him with questions about how to swim faster.  His evaluation raised my energy level, which was pretty low; I had gained no power from the island’s mountains, but our B&B host had given me a charm carved from whale bone to wear for receiving island power during the race   Things were going so well on the swim that I thought my swim time (no wet suit except optional for 70 and older) would be about 1:10.  Not so.  I was out of the water in 1:28:46.  Then, 900 feet to the transition tent.  TR 1 time was 8:51.  I decided that comfort during the race was more important than time, and changed into biking gear.

Onto the bike.  I rode the first 50 miles in 2:34, and thought we had a tail wind, but there wasn’t.  Then a 4 mile climb to the 60 mile mark turn around at Hawi.  The return was fast, without the infamous Kona cross-wind, until the last 20 miles into a head wind into the finish.  Bike time was 6:22:56.  I change into running gear.  TR 2 time was 5:23.

On the run, I had a bad attitude.  I didn’t want to hurt.  I had good form when I ran, but I walked most of the run.  At 11 hours into the race, 12 miles into the marathon, the sun went down.  It was bitch black.  This race usually has a full moon, but there was no moon and it was cloudy.   Ambulances were driving the run course in the dark and I wondered how they would ever find the injured before light next morning.  Run time was 5:16:40.

Total time was 13:22:38.  Received finisher’s t-shirt, lei, finisher’s medal, and replica of original Ironman trophy sculpture.   Now the triathlon shuffle for 4 days, and some recovery time.
