"True richness is made day by day with great effort." Francesco Alberoni
Marathon training is definitely harder after intense running and racing for nearly 30 years. I'm aching and groaning like a true old man these days as I pound the pavement! I don't think I'll make my personal goal of running one marathon per calendar year for 2003. For me, the challenge is regrouping on a new fitness program and adjusting my goals. And the challenge of setting goals is knowing when to trash them, knowing how to adjust them, and just plain old setting them at all.
Forgive the complaints, but I feel better now.
Anyone read TDF winner Lance Armstrong's new book?
Lots of week day-cycling schedules will change as the sun continues setting sooner and as the end of day light savings time approaches. It's been a fun summer of pack riding with the bunch in Baton Rouge on the River Road. It was just amazing to have enough riders to have two different groups riding regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I hope I'm not in trouble with New York City Marathon officials for passing
along Baton Rouge runner Patte Keogh's information on an entry she has. If
someone has connections to the event in the Big Apple, please let them know
it was innocent communication thought to be within the rules and appropriate
prior to running the 26.2-mile race.
St. Croix in the Virgin Islands is getting ready for its famous ultra
distance open-water swim set at the end of the month. I hope we'll have some
reports from you open-water swim stars! I know a few Baton Rougeans going to
the famous swim. Anyone else out there going to the event?
By the way, I need to make a correction from last week's Multisport Report
enewsletter. Ben Hewitt of the Northshore did not -- repeat did not -- run
the Durango Marathon in Colorado. He was just reporting on what he heard
from others who ran the event recently in the Rocky Mountains. I am sorry
for the confusion.
I am still putting together 2004 event date listings, so encourage all your
race directors out there to set some dates and get their information to me
for inclusion in the only printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report
set for distribution in late January, 2004. There is still time to include
ads in the edition, but the November deadline is approaching. If you have an
address change to receive the printed publication free, direct it to
dunawayoffice@.... For advertising information, call me or email me
so I can get you ad specifications and prices.

IronStar Half IronMan Triathlon Report from Conroe, TX
(For complete results, go to
http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/38661_43593_2003.txt)
BoBo Anderson of Opelousas won masters men division and Sue "Brew" Boudreaux
of Mandeville won the masters women's division at the first IronStar Half
IronMan Triathlon in Conroe, TX. Anderson actually finished third overall.
I hear that Joseph M. Lee of Baton Rouge had one of the best time out of the
water and was one of the first off the bike course. Too bad John Deshotel dropped some weights on his
foot and was kept out of the race. I hear he's working even harder on his
swimming as he recovers from his foot injury.
There were many Louisiana triathletes signed up for the event, though not
all showed up to race. There were a handful of the Northshore Team
Earthquakers, lots from Baton Rouge, and many from Acadiana. I can't say
that I know all those from North Louisiana. Sue Boudreaux said, "We decided that it was a great
race, but because it was the first year, there are definitely some
improvements that can be made. The swim was in beautiful Lake Conroe,
wetsuits allowed. It was a very unusual course, in that you had no idea
where you were going at any given time. I just followed whoever was in
front, and hoped they could spot the buoys."
Many described the bike course as awesome. It was described as rolling hills -- I think not. It
was up and down the whole time, but the scenery was great, and it's nice
riding somewhere new and different, according to Sue Boudreaux. "I could have ridden for another 59
miles! The run was hot and boring, but again with some fairly big hills. Biggest complaint-no beer after the race!
However, the absolutely best pre-race pasta meal I have ever had," she added.
Louisiana Senior Olympics Report

Lee Tonglet was awarded second place overall and gold in his age class at the
Saturday Louisiana Senior Olympic Games 40km cycling road race.
We call him LeeRoy Iacocca, or as many who ride close on his wheel call
him, Iacocca. He is still looking for first and came very close.
Sunday's LSOG saw a perfect score for Iacocca of three for three events
and all golds (5km and 10km time trials and 20km road race).
A 92-year-old put in a solid performance and with finishing the 20km was
still putting tremendous force to the pedals. A 77-year-old woman
finished very solid in the 20km also.
