I read in the Morning World newspaper where the Monroe Race for the Cure 5km was held last weekend in northeast Louisiana and drew a field of more than 3,000 runners and walkers. Does anyone know when the Shreveport, Houma or Thibodaux Race for the Cure events will be held?
Plans for the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon are well underway. Stay tuned for details. Also, Rusty Ex is recovering just enough from a successful CajunMan Triathlon to get ready for the Lafayette Half Marathon on the first weekend in December. Details are available at lafayettefitness.org.
Club South Runners based in Baton Rouge announced its Octoberfest 3 Miler for Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Mockler Beverage headquarters off I-10 via Siegen Lane and Industriplex in the capital city area.
I am still looking for 2004 fitness dates as the annual printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report comes together. Don't forget to keep me updated on any physical address changes so you can get the magazine free as it's been U.S. mailed for the past 10 years to everyone who's indicated an interest in getting it.
Three cheers to Jon Anderson for his Pedal Play Poker Run bike tour for raising thousands of dollars to continue honoring two Baton Rouge cyclists slain on the River Road just south of Baton Rouge on June 11, 2002. His fund raising continues to honor the late Steve Seiden and Tim Cappo who were tragically killed while riding.
Three cheers also to all the Team Earthquake guys and gals who've raised thousands of dollars to help world-class multisporter Donnie Jarrell fight Lou Gehrig's disease. The Team Earthquakers based on the Northshore turned out en masse for the Poker Run bike tour in the Felicianas to ride about 103 miles on Saturday, then turned right around headed home and put on another of the many, many fund raisers for their friend Donnie Jarrell. This group is testimony to what a true triathlon/multisport club should be doing as they so much more than just swim, bike, and run together -- they give unity as a group new meaning.
Also the Baton Rouge triathlon group continues to put together a nice web site, thanks to Susan Hayden. Check it out at batonrougetri.com.
Brett Faulk of Lafayette says the competitive cyclists year-long race points have been updated following the district road race. He noted that the Category 4 race did not count for points since it did not meet the minimum field requirement.
Congratulations to the following for winning their categories with one race left in the points series: Masters 35+ Chuck Moore - MFS/Pedal Play Women 1-4 Shontelle Gauthier - Southern Fire Protection Juniors Dylan Jason - MFS/Pedal Play http://www.lambra.org/
Thanksgiving Day Events Noted Steve Sperrier of the Northshore-based in Mandeville said the 15th Street Flyers will be hosting the Turkey Trotters 5K in Mandeville on Thanksgiving morning at the Mandeville Trailhead. For more information call the Spokesman Professional Bicycle Works at 985/-727-7211 or fax 985/727-7250 or email spokesman@...
Also the Atlanta Marathon is typically held on Thanksgiving Day in Atlanta, though I've not confirmed that. I've still not heard from the Baton Rouge March of Dimes about whether the capital city Turkey Trot 5km is still set.
GatorMan Triathlon Participation Low So Far; USAT Not Helping From Barry Laningham Entries for the Gatorman Triathlon set for the end of the month in Lake Charles are way down. Survival depends on more entries coming in over these next few days. In order to stimulate more late registrations, I have dismissed the late fees. Interference from the age group race the following weekend in Shreveport has severely hurt the Gatorman. This is the USAT National Sprint and Relay Championship. How often do you get two national championships within driving distance. Do both races and you will really boost your rankings, nationally and regionally. Spread the word.
USAT Officials Clinic Set Sept. 20 for Natchitoches with Meat Pie Triathlon From Elizabeth Cassano The Meat Pie Festival and Meat Pie Tri coming up in Natchitoches should bring much fun and excitement. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the participants and sponsors of the USAT Officials Clinic. Without the generous contributions of USAT, Lake Charles Triathletes, CajunMan, Louisiana Triathlon, Indian Creek Triathlon, Meat Pie Tri and Ed Cheatham, this event would not be possible. The race directors from these races will need you next year! We are counting on you to support the sport of triathlon! Please feel free to reach me via cell if necessary at 318/613-8782. From Ed Cheatham The USAT Officials Clinic is set for Saturday Sept. 20th at noon at the Tourism Office in Natchitoches. It will probably last about five hours. I'll try to make it as painless as possible. Personally, I usually enjoy them. It is always interesting to see what someone else comes up with. I like a relaxed informal atmosphere.
Clinic participants will need an officials manual which is available on the internet, which you need to bring. You also need to download the exam to fill out and bring to the clinic. This will ensure that you have at least read through the rules once. Of course like anything else, the more homework you do, the more meaningful the classroom experience. Please let me know if I can help any of you before the clinic. I'll be leaving here noon Friday. See you real soon.
Northshore Multisport User Group Shutting Down
From Bob Hodges
I am shutting down the Northshore Cyclists e-mail list. My reasons for doing this are personal and I believe the needs of cyclists in this area are well served by other cycling and multisport organizations. If there are any of you who only get your info from this list, I suggest you visit the following websites dependent upon your interests:
Thanks to those of you who have been supportive of my efforts (however misguided they seemed at times). I appreciate your support and positive energy.

For Sale From Bob Hodges I have an 18 foot Jeanautica Sea Kayak that I bought about three years ago for paddling in the lake and the rivers around here. I'm selling it because I just don't use it enough and it sits on a trailer under a storage shed collecting dust. Pictures of the boat are attached to this e-mail.
This is a fiberglass boat built in Italy. It weighs 40 lbs. It is a "sit-in" boat where you use a skirt. The boat is quite fast and is manueverable enough that it does not require a rudder. The boat is outfitted with adjustable foot pegs and includes a seat. There is a forward and aft bulkhead that form compartments for storage of gear. This boat could be used as a touring kayak for day trips and overnight trips. The boat is intended for the intermediate to advanced paddler as a novice may find it a bit unstable at first.
I am selling the boat for $1,400. This includes a skirt and a launching dolly but does not include a paddle. I do have a beautiful wood Silver Creek paddle made in Bryson City, NC that I could sell with the boat for another $100.
This might be a great boat for some of you interested in adventure racing where kayaking is one of the events.
You can contact me via e-mail or phone at 985/871-9480 if you are interested.
