It's CajunMan Triathlon time and district road race time in northwest Louisiana for competitive cyclists. Wow, what a weekend it will be for weekend racing warriors.
of so many on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain to help long-time
multisporter Donnie Jarrell, who is fighting Lou Gehrig's disease. He's got
some powerful friends who have emotionally, physically, and financially
supported him and his family through a storm of medical challenges. At he
Elephant Walk Triathlon in Destin recently, he was awarded the Scott
Christmas award and gave what many describe as "an awesome
acceptance/motivational speech" leaving few dry eyes in the crowd.
Jarrell is one of those jewels in multisporting (great runner, cyclist, and
multisporter and not a bad swimmer either). His medical/physical challenges
he now faces is a reminder of how fleeting life can be and how much more we
all have to offer beyond the realms of mere fitness competition. Press on
Donnie!

language which eliminates funding for the popular transportation

Congressman John Olver (D-MA) will offer an amendment during debate on
Thursday to restore the funding.

Just to let you know, Hotter'n'Hell doesn't have the USCF races anymore.
This is the second year they've not had them. They dropped them after USA
Cycling wouldn't upgrade the standing of their races even though they paid out
more money and had better attendance than some NRC events with higher
gradings. It's left some pretty sour feelings between the two groups.
But in regards to HHH, the only story I can tell you about is that one of
LaS'port's elite women racers, Jennifer Purcell of Dallas, finished 7th
overalland was the first woman to finish the 100-mile route. She had spent
10 days at SuperWeek in Wisconsin so her fitness level is right up there. But
since HHH is not a race now, she got no prizes for her accomplishment.
something to put this together as quickly as we have! This will be a bare-bones
cycling event -- nothing fancy. We will have water and Gatorade at the parking area and a
couple of port-a-lets. Here's some things for all of you to look over:
should be pretty good, so far a predicted high of 88 degrees with lots o' sun
and lows in the mid-60s both days. I've no idea what the humidity will be and how
that'll affect the heat index. Suffice it to say that it'll get warmer as the
day goes on.
feeds will be available), then be prepared to carry your own aqua (that's water
to those of you at LSU -- sorry, I'm a ULM fan! Man, ya'll kicked our butts!)
and food. In some of these races you'll need it! You cannot ditch your empty
bottles!! Put it back in your pocket or cage and carry it home with you. Auto DQ
for pitching trash on the race course unless you do it in the designated feed
zones and that includes gel packs.
return to the finish, when you are heading south on Seven Pines Road you will
continue to go straight instead of turning right onto Cycle Plant Road. As you
continue to go south you will come to Highway 162 and turn right for a straight
shot back to the finish. This change eliminates a left turn, also gets rid of a
hidden spot at Butler Hill Road/Hwy. 162, and will be a lot safer for the
racers. It'll be faster, too. Remember, Cycle Plant Road will NOT be used for
the return. Go straight south on Seven Pines and right on 162. I'll send out a
revised map in a day or two.
be such a bad thing. It can be done well enough in a 21 but ain't it nice to
have more options?
feel lonely. But be alert when you come to intersections. The road is always
open to traffic and if you're not with the main group, you are obligated to slow
down at the turns and look for traffic unless a course marshall waves you
through. Many of the turns are marked with yellow arrows painted on the road or
with vertical signs with arrows. There should be course marshals at every
intersection or turn, but you have a responsibility to keep your head up and pay
attention to them and to the traffic around you!! This is just a district road
race (with medals and little money), it's not the world championships. Keep
everything in perspective here and be careful!

meters east of Benton Elementary on Highway 162. When you cross the line, keep
going and turn into the parking lot right after your finish. Get off the highway as soon as you can.
workout. I figured since this was a championship race, it should be on a tough
course and thanks to Terry Milam I think it is. It'll be up to you whether you
agree or not. Maybe Hodges is tougher, maybe not, but our roads will be better
(there are a few homages to Jon Anderson out there, you'll find them).

I've done the Tour de Tangipahoa two or three times in prior years and
enjoyed it as an MS Tour tune-up. However, since the Tangipahoa Parish
Council passed Ordinance No. 98-13, restricting the ability of cyclists to
ride in Tangipahoa, I've boycotted the event. I was part of a
letter-writing campaign explaining to the promoters, the Hammond Kiwanis
Club, why I wasn't going to participate after the passage of the ordinance.
In recent years, another line of thought has been to ride in the event and
to show the Tangipahoa Parish Council why it should let cyclists back on its
roads without the restrictions currently in place -- no groups of more than
8 cyclists without first: (1) posting the ride in the local paper 48 hours
in advance, (2) obtaining a permit from the parish permit office, and (3)
obtaining a police escort for the ride, all to be enforced with a fine of
$500 per person for violations (increased last year from $200). However,
rather than rescind the ordinance, the parish beefed up the fine for
violations. And if this year's MS Tour training rides are any indication of
how cyclists are going to behave on those group rides that involve many
infrequent riders who either don't know or don't care to abide by the
cycling laws, the odds are that the participating cyclists' conduct in the
event will not change any anti-cycling sentiment in Tangipahoa.
I'll pass on the Tour de Tangipahoa

Down Cyclists in Texas Sounds Like June 11, 2002 in Louisiana

The above link will take you to the story regarding the lost of two of our
fellow cyclists. We had an accident today that included some of our family of
cyclists. Today during a ride in the Lake Jackson area, with Ruben S., Kenny
York, and Many More were hit by a Lady in a truck, she lost control and hit
the pack of riders. Kenny's close friend-she was life flight to Herman
Hospital. Two fellow cyclist were killed at the site. And many more were
injured, broken bones and broken skin and etc.As this happen we need to
always expect the unexpected, we can never be to careful.
I would like to ask for Pray for the many cyclist and their families that
were involved in this accident.
