"It is healthier to see the good points of others than to analyze
our own bad ones." Françoise Sagan
Wow, my email/cyber space stuff learning curve just doesn't seem to
level out for me. I'm sorry my enotes have been irregular; I know
it's just killing some of you not to have received this note (that's
sarcasm). Thanks to my email/cyber consultant John Sanford, I am
trying to keep up to speed.
How cool it was to see Premier Event Management owner Bill Burke of
Metairie so prominently recognized in the recent edition of Runner's
World magazine? He's no doubt the most enduring multisport event
manager in the world, and he's born and bred right here in
Louisiana. He's working and working hard to make the Mardi Gras
Marathon happen and happen in a big way. All the proceeds from the
Mardi Gras Marathon will go to local hurricane relief projects.
Check out the article if you get a chance. Better still, sign up for
the marathon, half marathon or 5km run he's putting on for the
Crescent City.
Anyone running the New Orleans Track Club's annual Jackson Day run
coming up soon? Is it this weekend? Check out the web at
runNOTC.com. Race director Chuck George with the club has worked
hard making this the longest continually staged road race in the
country. Way to go New Orleans Track Club.
Does anyone know from what towns Michele Murray, Joel Hinton, and
Marie Claude Bellanger are? I need the info for the printed edition
of the Louisiana Multisport Report.
Energy levels are heightening as we are a month away from the first
LaMBRA competitive cycling races set for Baton Rouge's River Road
and the first duathlon in Shreveport on Feb. 5. The group workouts
are packing up nicely, especially with such fabulous spring-like
weather. But I hear the cold weather's coming, so get your warm-
weather workouts in before the cold blasts through again.
<<BR Cyclist Margaret Moran Dies in Crash in Felicianas>>
From Bruce Wickert
At slightly after noon on Saturday, Jan. 7, we lost a cyclist and
friend in a crash near St. Francisville. Margaret Moran turned into
the path of a same direction car while attempting to cross the
highway 61 from the shoulder.
The site of the crash was just north of the US-61/LA-966 "Starhill"
intersection, across from the D'John Restaurant. Neither the driver
of the Hummer vehicle, nor Margaret had time to react to avoid the
collision. The Hummer was the last in a string of cars on this busy
highway. The driver, and others stopped immediately, offered
assistance, and called 911 for an ambulance, which arrived quickly.
She was transported to West Feliciana Hospital in St. Francisville,
where personnel made valiant efforts to sustain her life but those
efforts were unsuccessful.
Arrangements are incomplete as this note was written, but visitation
will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge no sooner than
Tuesday. I will pass on additional information as I receive it.
Margaret died without regaining consciousness. Husband Sam, and
children Gina, Jeff, Chris, and her Grandchildren will miss her, as
will the BRBC and Cavaliers de La Fayette cycling clubs with whom
she regularly rode.
Lynn Boland and I were riding with her today, about 50 yards behind
and witnessed this tragedy. To be so close and be so helpless to
prevent it ....
<<Evangeline Oaks Duathlon Coming Feb. 11>>
From Kendal Broussard
Well, it is that time of year again for the second annual Evangeline
Oak Duathlon set for St. Martinville. The race is set for Feb. 11,
2005. The race is staged at the oak tree made famous by American
poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The poem is a story of the Cajun
exile and a young girl (named Evangeline) who waited all her life
for her beau to find her after being forced by the British from her
home in Acadia, now called Nova Scotia.
So come breathe hard, experience racing in cold weather, and learn a
bit more about Louisiana history and its connection to France.

<<Phil Gioia Survives Katrina, Prepares to Direct La. Triathlon>>
How fitting that New Orleans native Phil Gioia, 55, should be
serving as race-weekend director for the 13th Louisiana Triathlon in
Pointe Coupée Parish. He will coordinating the work of long-time key
volunteers for the Saturday, April 22 event staged in downtown New
Roads.
Long-time race director Kenny Dunaway still will be deeply involved
in setting up and promoting the event. For the first time, though,
Dunaway cannot be on site on the day of the race due to professional
obligations. Gioia will be assisted by many of the same key
volunteers as have been involved for years in the event.
Born on Canal Street in the Crescent City, Gioia is a two-time
Ironman finisher and has long been involved in competitive fitness
events in greater New Orleans and around the Gulf Coast region. Most
notably, he has served as race director of the Pelicanman Duathlon
since its inception in 1989 and really set the trend for the now-
popular 2-mile run, 10-mile ride, and 2-mile ride format.
While he was born in New Orleans, he has long lived in Chalmette and
in fact served as president and race director Chalmette Track Club
for 17 of 23 years he's been involved in the group.
As a triathlete, he competed -- or rather participated as he says --
in events all over the U.S. including Gulf Coast, Buffalo Springs,
Freedom Days in New Mexico and the half Ironman at held in New Roads
when Jim Bergeron was race director back in the early 1990s. He
calls himself a chronic participant in the "Reluctant Athelete"
series in the 1980s when equipment was not cool.
He has completed in every tri staged in Louisiana except Caney near
Minden (always a conflict) and had only one DNF (Louisiana Triathlon
at New Roads).
In running events, he has completed more than 100 marathons,
including the last 21 Mardi Gras Marathons (the record of 23
consecutive will fall).
While swimming may not be his favorite, it helped as he salvaged
homes during Hurriances Betsy in 1965 and then again in 2005 with
Hurricane Katrina. Now he knows to keep fit for swimming since
forecasters say there will be more hurricanes than fewer in the
years to come.
His day job has him as operations manager and chemist for
Severn Trent Plaquemines Parish project (where he's been
very busy for since the hurricanes). But his experience will help
him be a great water-quality tester for triathlons in the days to
come. He assures participants in New Roads that he himself will test
the water quality of False River on race day.
Oh yes, and his other hobby is climbing Mt Rainier in Washington
state.
