Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Aug. 17, 2005

"Pessimists calculate the odds. Optimists believe they can over come
them." Ted Koppel

Good luck to the Herring Gas Team bike racing team at the French
Guyana multi-day race over the next week. It's the only American bike
racing team invited in the international event and the team includes
many riders from all over Louisiana and Mississippi. Stay tuned for
New Orleans rider Kenny Bellau's hilarious perspectives on the event.

The Louisiana/Mississippi team time trial championships, hosted by
Baton Rouge-based Tiger Cycling Foundation, will be held Oct. 8 in
Baton Rouge. Event details are at:

The second annual Rocket Kids Triathlon will be held in Baton Rouge

the event will be BRTri multisport club.

Multisporter Scott Pyles is home from Africa where he works. He'll be
in Louisiana for the next year. If you've got a group looking for
speakers, Pyles has some most interesting views he can offer from a
podium on West Africa, specifically the country of Cameroon.

Also, he notes that there are more photos from the District Criterium
Championships (mostly Cat. 1/2/3), by Malcolm Schuler, which have
been added to the NOBC website

<<Meat Pie Triathlon Set as La. State Tri Club Challenge>>
From Elizabeth Cassano
Hey, guys, the Sept. 25th Meat Pie Tri is just around the corner and
there's lots of excitement about this year's event. Back by popular
demand and our state tri spirit, the second Annual Louisiana State
Tri Club Challenge is set to take place at Meat Pie. BRTri has
bragging rights as Club Challenge Champion for only a few more weeks.
Will they defend their 2004 title is the big question?

Step it up, rally the troops, bring the competition, come for the
fun, enjoy the meat pies and challenge the orange and blue. RRTC,
Twin Cities, Lake Charles, Team Earthquake, Sunrise, Bayou Gators,
Meat Pie Tri Club, GNO Tri, Team Gecko, do you guys accept the
challenge?

Please forward the below rules of the State Tri Club Challenge on to
club members. There have been several changes made to the 2005
Edition of Rules that I think you will like. Please contact us with
any questions. Remember, too, that Meat Pie is also a 2005 Regional
Club Championship event -- these are two separate "competitions."

Back by popular demand and the competitive spirit of our Louisiana
triathletes is the annual Louisiana State Tri Club Challenge. It's a
fun, challenging opportunity for state clubs to compete against one
another, awarding points in such a fashion that every finisher will
make a difference.

Points, Participation & Prizes
Every club member's finish counts, so rally the troops! The club
that earns the most total points will:
--be crowned the "2005 Louisiana Tri Club Challenge Champion"
--receive the 2005 Club Challenge "Cup" Award
--earn bragging rights for one year!
--and, every finisher on the winning club's team will receive a
special recognition t-shirt including the Club's name and status of
2005 Challenge Champions (t-shirts will be printed post race with the
winning team's name and presented in the weeks following the race)!

Points will be awarded as follows:
Top 3 Male and Female Overall Top 5 Male & Female in each
Age
Group
1st = 10 points 1st = 6
points
2nd = 8 points 2nd = 5
points
3rd = 6 points 3rd = 4
points
4th = 3 points
5th = 2 points

Overall Masters and Grand Masters
1st = 8 points

Relay Division (must be composed of 2 of 2 OR 3 of 3 club members to
score placement points*)
1st = 6 points
2nd = 5 points
3rd = 4 points

*Only teams composed of club members from the same club will be
eligible for placement points. However, if a club member participates
with a non-club member(s), the member will be awarded 1 point for
that team's finish.

New in 2005
Any club member that is on the injured reserve list or chooses not to
race for any reason, but wants to participate with their Club in the
Challenge will be awarded one point for their spirit of volunteerism
on race day.

Each finisher will be awarded either one point for finishing or
points for placement in his/her respective age group or relay
division.

Our tri trust is based on your honesty and commitment to uphold the
highest standards of Louisiana triathlon race directors and
participants. The club challenge will rely on the club president (or
representative) to abide by the "honor system." Any member or club
found to be playing by any system other than the honor system will be
DQ'd from the challenge.

Club members must include their tri club name on their registration
form. If it is not included on the registration form, the individual
will not be assigned to a club. Therefore, the club they are
representing will not be awarded any points in their honor.

Notes
--Not all participants will be affiliated with a club, therefore
should these participants place in the above ranks, there will be no
points awarded to a tri club.
--Any club member that receives a penalty for disobeying (or
breaking) USA Triathlon rules will not be eligible for placement
points, only one point for finishing!
--Complete club rosters must be submitted to Race director by
Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005.
--Should a member realize they have not indicated their club's name
on the registration form - they must notify the race director
immediately! No changes/additions will be made after Saturday, Sept.
24, 2005.
--Race-day registrants will not, again, will not be allowed to
participate in the club challenge.

Check Out a California Perspective on the Meat Pie Tri
From Susan Mc
(Editor's Note: I hope the the attachment is accessible)
Here's a long, but humorous race report of the Meat Pie Triathlon
from last year. The girl who wrote this (Jayne Williams from
California) wrote a very witty and inspiring book called "Slow, Fat
Triathlete," which is about her journey from being a heavy couch
potato to losing weight and still being a heavy triathlete. She's the
girl who appropriately said that wearing a wetsuit was fun because it
makes you feel like a super-hero. Her book is great to give as a gift
to anyone who thinks they can't do a triathlon.

Check out www.slowfattriathlete.com. Read the first couple of lines
and you'll be hooked.

<<McCreary of BR Back on the Bike After 60mph Collision With Car>>
From David Glynn
I received the following note from Gary McCreary of Baton Rouge (who
was smashed last year by car going 60mph). I guess this shows what a
person can do if willing to push past hardship! Thanks Gary.

Dave,
I have started cycling again, but not on the roads. Last week I rode
40 miles on the St. Tammany Trace and this week I plan to ride on the
levee from St. Rose to New Orleans. I never thought I would be able
to ride again. It must be because of all he good blood I received
from so many of the great caring and athletic BR riders! Please keep
me in mind if you are in need of drivers. If I am in town I will be
happy to help.Thanks again for everyone's prayers and support. Gary
