Chiefs who no more in bloody fights engage,
But wise through time, and narrative with age,
In summer-days like grasshoppers rejoice,—
A bloodless race, that send a feeble voice.
The Iliad of Homer. Book iii. Line 199.
Congratulations to Kyle Boudreaux and the Delta Racing team for
putting on a great competitive cycling event on the River Road
outside of Baton Rouge. Bill Burke's Premier Event Management team
did a great job, too, on the last of the AbitaMan Triathlon series.
At both events a good time was had by all -- well most -- according
to various email reports.
Results of last weekend's Delta Racing race can be found at:

It's River Cities Triathlon time this coming Sunday in northwest
Louisiana. This may be the longest continually staged triathlon in
the state. Congratulations to race director Matt Brown for
successfully staging the event for so long. By the way, I think the
course record is still held by a fellow named Lance Armstrong who
raced there long, long time ago.
Can anyone verify which Louisiana triathlon has been going on the
longest? The River Cities Triathlon has been regularly referred to
as "... the Shreveport race." In fact, it's held in Bossier Parish
nearest the town of Benton on the east side of Red River. This is an
important geogrpahical distinction and I've never understood why the
great folks of Bossier Parish have let this geographic error
continue. Someone respond.
On Saturday, Aug. 6 in conjunction with River Cities Triathlon,
there will be a youth event called the Ironfish Kids Triathlon set
for what is listed as Shreveport. Get the details at
sportspectrumusa.com.
I was delighted to see Runner's World magazine list its 25 Golden
Rules of Running. Included in the list was the note that runners and
walkers ordinarily stay on the left side of the road. Some of you
long-time readers of this enote may remember one my pet peeves is on
which side of the road runners should stay. I've heard and some
towns have ordinances requiring runners and walkers to stay on the
left side of the road unless otherwise designated. Where I live here
in Baton Rouge, there's an ongoing safety challenge of runners,
walkers, strollers, roller bladers, and cyclists being
all over the road. Motorists have a hard enough time with other
motorists, much less non-motorists who are all over every side and
inch of the road.
Come on folks, let's be courteous to everyone and follow the commonly
practiced rules of the road, whether law is in place or not.
<<Third Annual Donz Soirée Set Aug. 7>>
From Louis Leonard "Salty" Galvis
Tickets are now available for the third annual Donz Soirée,
honoring the memory of multisporter Donnie Jarrell and benefiting
the Donnie Jarrell Foundation, which was established at the request
of Donnie and Tonya Jarrell to assist victims of ALS and families
with children with autism and other sensory deficit disorders such
as those whom Donnie used to teach in the St. Tammany Parish
schools. The Donz Soirée will be on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, from 6
p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be held at the Lake Pontchartrain
Basin Maritime Museum, located at 133 Mabel Drive in Madisonville.
As in the past, the Donz Soirée will feature cocktails, beer,
wine, appetizers, entrées, and desserts, including that famous
chocolate fountain, and, new for this year, a cheese fountain as
well, all provided by several of the area's finest chefs,
restaurateurs, and other purveyors of food and drink. Live
entertainment will be provided by Voodoo Funk and Soul and the Blue
Meanies, and, as in the past, there will be a silent auction and
live auction, featuring artwork and crafts of local artists and many
other items, including a cycling jersey autographed by Lance
Armstrong.
As it has been in the past, the Donz Soirée will be an
entertainment highlight of the year in our area, and tickets will no
doubt go fast. Tickets are $85 each and can be purchased at the
Spokesman Professional Bicycle Works in Mandeville or by mail with
checks made payable to the Donnie Jarrell Foundation and mailed to
121 Madewood Drive, Mandeville, LA 70471.Tickets are available
online at www.active.com.
If you purchase tickets via active.com, you will not automatically
receive the tickets from active.com or anyone else. You will have the
option of either getting your tickets from me prior to the soirée
or picking them up at the door on the evening of the event.
Active.com will send me a report every day with the names and other
information it gathers from the folks who sign up online, and I will
set aside your tickets for you as I receive your names. You, too,
will receive a confirmation of your purchase ("registration") from
active.com, and you can then ask me for your tickets in advance or
wait until the evening of the soirée. You will NOT be able to obtain
tickets purchased via active.com from the Spokesman.

<<"Robert's Ride" Starts in Natchez, MS on Saturday>>
From Philip Baker
A bunch from Baton Rouge will be starting a multi-day ride on
Saturday Aug. 6th at 6:30 a.m. at mile marker 10, which is the start
of the Natchez Trace just off U.S. 61 north of Natchez, MS. The
pace will be 20mph average, with a goal to ride the whole trace in
two days, which is about 460 miles. You can ride it all or any part.
On the second day -- Sunday Aug. 7th -- we will complete the ride
and get back to Baton Rouge late that night. We will motel it
wherever we finish up on Saturday. I'm thinking two to four riders
per car, with cars provided by riders, a sag in the way of food,
water, sports drink and bars will be provided so riders can
concentrate on just riding. Call 225.343.8416
if you need more info.
Committed to ride so far are Mike Rourke, Ted Heroman, Jerry Simon
and many more.
(Editor's Note: Each year Baker does this ride to commemorate the
tragic airline deaths of relatives. Usually he rides from Louisiana
to the site of the airline crash in Nova Scotia.)
<<Ride for the Environment Set Sept. 17>>
From Kathy Duplantis
The flyer and rider registration form for the Sept. 17 ride can be
found on the Parrot Head web site: www.brphc.org.
As usual three will be a t-shirt, a goodie bag, door prizes, food
and drink for the riders!
<<Bike Races at Velodrome Considered for Weekend>>
From Adam
It looks like BREC is making us change the time of this weekend's
track race. After much discussion between, it appears the
two best options are Saturday morning, probably starting about 8
a.m., or Sunday evening with a 4 p.m. start time.
Please send me all of your opinions and suggestions. It is very
important that we get a good turnout. BREC is using poor turnouts as
an excuse to allocate less time to bike racing at the track, while
at the same time making it difficult for us to get good turnouts! If
we can get more riders, we'll start to get better times scheduled
for us.
In short, I need everyone who wants to make it to the track this
weekend to let me know which time would work better.
Events will be:
Flying 200, qualifier for match sprints
State championship 4km pursuit (3km for women)
State championship Match sprints
20-lap scratch race for category 4 and women
30-lap Scratch race for categories 1,2,3
90-lap Points race for categories 1,2,3
Possibly a category 4 points race.
Remember, this will be the district championships for the pursuit
and the match sprints. For more information, email me at
adam@...

Bike Parts Wanted
From Steve Poss
I am looking for some used road brakes and levers to build up a
basic single speed commuter bike on an old frame. Anyone, call me
at 225.223-6296 or email sposs@....
For Sale
From Beth Bonner

Yakima roof rack must go. There is a key to lock your bike to the
rack and to lock the rack to the car. It holds one bike, but you can
add trays for more bikes if you would like.
If the offer is good, I can throw in the Toyota Camry, which is
currently attached to the roof rack, otherwise, dont worry the car
can be removed and you can just have the bike rack.
I dont need it anymore because I am a very lucky girl and I am
getting a minivan.

That's it for now. Bless God America.
