Wow, the Tour de France broadcasts on the Outdoor Life Network have been good so far. Of course the race itself makes event reporting good, too. Maybe Le Tour made the Baton Rouge weekday training race super fast as well. Tuesday -- with tropical storm warnings out -- a comparably small band of cycling die hards braved steady and sometimes gusting winds for some fast rolling down the River Road. I don't know why the speeds and tempo was so high, but many pointed to Le Tour as the inspiration.
Lots of competitive cycling races are on the agenda still for the year with the next one set in the Baton Rouge area on the weekend of July 16 if I'm not mistaken. We'll see if Le Tour inspires fast times later in the month.
July 31 is set for the last AbitaMan Triathlon in the series. Stay tuned for
details. Rusty Bex reports that the CajunMan Triathlon set for Lafayette in September is now officially full.
The Jones Creek location of Capitol Cyclery in Baton Rouge is alive and well
and wide open for any and all cycling and general fitness equipment needs. I
apologize for the confusion about the Jones Creek noted in the last
enewsletter a week ago.
Randy Legeai reports that the weekends for the August cycling team time
trial and track meet at the Baton Rouge velodrome have been swapped. The
correct dates are Saturday, Aug. 6 for the track races and Saturday, Aug. 13
for the team time trial
Attached is a report on the Yam City Triathlon held in Opelousas.
The Caney Lake Triathlon held outside the northwest Louisiana town of Minden is
set for July 24. It is the Mid-Southwest Regional Championship and involves
a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and a 10km run. Triathlon wet suit rules will be
enforced and timing is being handled by Champion Chip.Sign up via

Jeff Galloway, the winner of the first Peachtree in 1970, is still one of
the most recognizable figures in the field of 55,000 at the Atlanta, GA 10km
event. Wearing a t-shirt inscribed with his "Run Walk Run" program for
distance training, Galloway said he took 15 walk breaks Monday in the
Peachtree 10km staged in downtown (and hot) Atlanta.
"I actually ran faster than I did last year when I only took about two walk
breaks," said Galloway, who will turn 60 next week and estimated his time at
41:30. "It's great; you're starting to slow down, so you walk, then you can
pick right back up and pass people."
He admits people may look at him strangely when they see the former Olympian
walking. "I don't care what they think," said Galloway, who has also won the
Atlanta Marathon twice. "It works."
Report on Health of Cyclist Brian Apsey
From Stephen Apsey
(Editor's Note: Apsey fought off some serious complications after a heart
surgery in Oklahoma. He was in ICU for a while, but he is now back in Baton
Rouge. The 70-something-year old Briton who now claims Louisiana as his home
is credited for bringing competitive bike racing to Baton Rouge and much of
the state and the region.)
Thanks for all the emails. We finally made it back
from Oklahoma last night. We decided to drive back as
we thought it would be less stress full than flying.
Brian has a few more holes and scars in him but we are
hoping everything will heal up. They ended having to
put a pacemaker in him that they ended up having to
put on the wrong side but that was a whole other
story, suffice it to say it was two weeks of ups and
downs with all kinds of complications.
Recovery is going to be a long process but he is doing
better every day.
Update on Shreveporter Shannon Koch's Cycling Accomplishments
From Alan Moore <amoore@...>
Shannon Koch of Team LaS'port won the world's junior road race, which
made her eligible to ride in both events at Worlds. She took third place in a
recent criterium so two golds with S&S jerseys and a bronze aren't too bad
for her last year in the junior ranks. Where she goes after this
year is anybody's guess!
