Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

June 29, 2005

Heroism is the brilliant triumph of the soul over the flesh, that is to say over fear: fear of poverty, of suffering, of calumny, of illness, of loneliness and of death. There is no real piety without heroism. Heroism is the dazzling and glorious concentration of courage. Henri Frédéric Amiel (1821-1881)

Our dear friend and mentor multisporter Donnie Jarrell of Mandeville passed from this life Tuesday. Please pray for the Jarrell family and his wonderful army of friends who fought with him as he wrestled with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Truly, he fought the good fight. His struggle for life was nothing less than a glorious display of living life to the fullest day by day, comprehending that we all really don't know when our last one is. To make a memorial donation or contribution to continue the fight to beat ALS, go to donzaroo.com.

It's time to get fired up about the world's biggest and most celebrated bike race: the Tour de France. I don't know about elsewhere in the state or country, but I don't recall hearing about so many parties and gatherings to celebrate Le Tour and what the patron of the peleton, Lance Armstrong, is calling his last professional bike race. Hang on to quite an adventure of a competitive bike race. I am sure the TV's Discovery Channel and the now famous Outdoor Life Network (which we have to pay separately for in the capital city) are poised for quite a race. I just read the special edition of the main stream Sports Illustrated and even that publication gave incredible coverage to what was not a widely watched much less raced sport in North America before three-time winner Greg LeMond and now Armstrong.

There's a new bike shop in the Baton Rouge area called Dirt Road Bicycles at
5441 - C Jones Creek Road, 225.246.8064. I hear Capitol Cyclery closed its
Jones Creek store in the capital city and that Brent DeLoach's shop on Jones
Creek Road closed as well.

Reports of the Anthony Nolan Memorial Championship Road race indicate that the very difficult venue in west central Louisiana lived up to its brutal and challenging reputation. The late Anthony Nolan's name attached to the event is fitting considering his persevering endurance as a racer himself where he himself made quite a name for himself among Louisiana bike racers on the very roads raced last weekend. Thanks to his twin brother Norman Nolan for staging the event. Results of this LaMBRA road championship held at Hodges Gardens are now available at:
http://www.gnofn.org/~nobc//2005/lambra_rr_res.htm

Here's news of the second Florida shark attack in three days near where many triathlons are staged each year.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050628/ts_nm/life_shark_dc

The event announcement for this Saturday's cycling track meet set for the Baton Rouge velodrome is available at:
http://www.gnofn.org/~nobc//2005/trkser_04.htm

This cycling track meet will include the regional team pursuit and team sprint championships.
Individual track event championships will be held the following week, July 9.

The LaMBRA Cycling Cup Series standings have been updated following last
weekend's district championship road races held in Hodges Gardens near Many, LA:
http://www.lambra.org/
By the way, happy fourth of July and Bastille Day's coming soon, too. Check out your local running club web sites for lots of information on Independence Day fitness events.

Shannon Kock Wins Time Trial World Championship
From Alan Moore <amoore@...>
Shreveport-based Team LaSport's Shannon Koch won the Women's 17-18 National
Time Trial Championship in cycling on June 21 in Utah with a 31:54 time and
by 13 seconds over
Kimberly Giest. The win assured Kock a nomination to the USA Junior
World's Team for the World Championships in Austria this August.

For Sale
From Reggie Bressette
I am selling a Softride Power Wing bicycle for $1,000.
The size is small. The color is yellow. Ultegra components with 650 wheels.
It is a great multisport bicycle for time trials, triathlons and duathlons.
The bicycle is in great shape.

For Sale
From Marc Breecher mdbreecher@...
I have up for sale is a 9-speed Dura Ace crankset (double) with 53/39 chain
rings and a Dura Ace bottom bracket which fits English threaded bottom brackets.
Crank arm length is 172.5.

These are off of my Wilier and are in excellent condition. No scratches
or scuffs and the teeth are near perfect.  The bottom bracket is able to be
serviced. I have cleaned and greased the bearings so it's ready to
install. I'm switching to the compact style cranks, so these need to go to a new
home. I'm asking $200 firm for both items.

Please email me direct at
mdbreecher@... with any questions or if
you want a photo.

++++++++++

That's it for now. Bless God America.
