Unbelievably, the River Road south of the LSU Vet School in Baton Rouge has been resurfaced to Farr Horse Park. Now, if the road can be resurfaced all the way to Gardere Lane that would be even better.

Work continues on setting up a fall duathlon in Baton Rouge. Pat Fellows and Chuck Grosse have been piecing together some possibilities for the event, possibly in October. Stay tuned.

Rusty Bex of Lafayette and Houston Jones of Lake Charles did some trail riding to get ready for the Sam Houston Jones Park Adventure Race in two weeks. They had more than their share of tumbles (some would say crashes), but insist they will be ready for the big Calcasieu Parish off-road event. Their third teammate reminded them that it's okay to get off the bike at treacherous off-road trail spots and walk. There's just no glory in being hurt to the point of not working out, much less racing. This adventure race thing seems challenging for the over age 40 crowd.

I'm looking for a bike for a first-time triathlete to use in Baton Rouge. She stands five feet six inches and hopes to do her first one in August. She doesn't want to invest in a bike until she at least trains and tries to do one event. Let me hear from you if you have an "extra" bike you don't mind sharing from mid-July to mid-August. Email me.

Baton Rouge Foxy's, Spectrum Fitness Health Clubs Plan Merger

225.706-3636, ext. 113
Foxy's Health Club of Baton Rouge and Spectrum Fitness Club based in Baton
Rouge announced plans late last week to merge the two operations in order to
compete with national fitness clubs coming to the area. By July 1, members
can workout at any of the locations of the two clubs in the greater Baton
Rouge area.

Spectrum is offering a 14-day trial membership via www.spectrumfitness.com

Velodrome Riders Sought for Track Races; $1,000 Up for Grabs
From Ben Schuler
Do you own a track bike or have access to one? Well, I know for a fact that a lot of you do and yet it has never rolled on the surface of a Velodrome in Baton Rouge. I also know for a fact that the track racers from years ago that once set untouchable record and won countless championships choose to stay home on Saturday nights and watch the Velodrome that they once loved go.
Last weekend we experienced an all-time low for track turn outs; eight cyclists came to race. We even offered a $5 road bike time trial. The sponsoring bike team, Tiger Cycling Foundation (TCF) had more than eight volunteers show up. This is why public officials will eventually take away all of our cycling hours and give them to the skateboarders. More that eight skateboarders show up every night and public officials, i.e., BREC, makes more money off of them. The Velodrome will eventually be turned into the only $3 million skatepark. We need to give BREC a reason to justify having our races. I gave BREC a number of 30 cyclists for every race at the beginning of the year and I need to get 30 cyclists out this weekend. There are no other races this weekend and the Giro (training ride) in New Orleans can't give you what I am about to offer.
I have put all the best races on the event list: 200m sprint, matched sprints, team pursuit, win and out, 10-lap snowball, unknown distance, and the race of truth the kilo. I am getting together primes for the races and prize money beyond what the promoting team is going to offer. If any state record falls form now on, your name will be painted on you very own board with your time. The series winners will also be painted on the wall along with the jersey you will win. A board is also going to be set aside for what I like to call the "11 club." If you break 12 seconds on the 200 meter sprint, you will be part of this elite club. Every race will have an announcer. This will make the races more exciting for the fans, thus your wife or husband will not complain about being board. I am offering Louisiana Velodrome immortality.
In my few years at the track I have seen as many people out there as 50 and as few as eight. Thirty cyclists, that is the number that I want. This race could be the beginning of the revitalization of track racing in Louisiana or mark the end of it. Please show up and support the BREC velodrome.

Butch Sims of Herring Gas has donated $300 to the prize list and will donate more if the turn out is good. Also a few local bike shops are going to try and get us some primes. If anyone wants to help in this effort to make Saturday night a big deal e-mail me as soon as possible.

T-Shirt Quilt Maker Recommended
From Michelle
I recently had a quilt made out of some of my favorite race t-shirts from
triathlons, duathlons, road races, and adventure races.  It's something I
had wanted to do for a long time, and I finally found someone that could do
it and do a good job with it (Louise Regan).  She does absolutely beautiful
work and I now have an incredible keepsake.  I am attaching a link to her
website that has the quilt she made for me featured as an example, and
contains her contact information for anyone interested.  I've heard other
folks talk about wanting something like this made as well, so I thought I
would pass this onto you to send out on the email lists you have for the
racing community. Check out: http://homepage.mac.com/daveregan/Index.html

Miss.'s Heat Wave Triathlon Worth Trying
From MarkChalupa
This is definitely a race one has to go to enjoy. It's a 800-meter lake swim and this year it was really smooth. Some said the swim was long, but it was still good. It's a in the water start. The swim exit is up a boat ramp and it's only a 20 yards to the first transition.  On the bike and run there was constantly a slow incline or decline, but the scenery and the road you ride on are so nice; it makes up for it.  At the mid point there are actually volunteers handing out water and Gatorade bottles. The wind was blowing pretty good on the way back.

In the 10km run the first and last mile were very sunny and hot, then you
hit the shaded path for 4.2 miles. You had water stops about every mile, and
the last one about .2 miles before the turn had sponges for everyone.

All and all it was a great race and I plan on heading
out there again next year. I can't tell you about the
awards ceremony, because me and the misses wanted to
head home with the pups.

Herring Gas Cycling Team Dominates Competition
The Herring Gas Team finished up a successful spring with several
victories across the south. The results page for the team lists top 10
finishes in Texas, dominating victories in Mississippi and finishing
up with a third place at the CSC Invitational in Arlington, Virginia on
Memorial Day weekend. The team expects to see more great finishes this
summer.

Bellau 3rd place at CSC, top-50 at Somerville NRC.
Kenny Bellau of New Orleans made his way to the podium at the CSC
invitational Criterium Cat 1 race over Memorial Day Weekend. "I gunned it into the
last turn and left a huge gap in my wake" said a somewhat disappointed
Bellau. "I really thought I had the race won. I knew that no one on
the planet could follow me through that turn, (a sharp left hander at
about 120 degrees) but I just couldn't hold off a couple of those
sprinters." Jake Stevens from Nature Valley got by Bellau with John
Green (AG Edwards) in tow for second place. "I was alone here and just
let the big teams fight it out all day. There were 95 guys here and I
knew I would be a surprise to  them when I made my move, I just didn't
think my move would be in the last turn on the last lap. I had a good
day considering..."

The following day at the Tour of Somerville, New Jersey, Bellau
showed his fitness again by leading the over 200 riders for the first
lap of the Pro race. A signature move in local races for the Herring
rider, but in an NRC race? "Well, I was just showing off a little,"
Bellau admitted. "I started dead last, behind the last row of riders
and made it into the first turn first. I like to show these NRC babies
how fast is fast in a corner.. before they get a chance to blow my
doors off later on." Bellau kept to the front for the entire race.
Despite sticking his front  wheel into someone's derailleur on the last
lap, he still managed finishing 45th. CyclingNews.com reports Bellau
as a DNF, but pictures on their site from the last lap contradict that
listing. Bellau has pics of his own (attached) that show a 45th
placing which along with the CyclingNews.com pics will aid his plea to
amend that ugly DNF. Good luck to him in his next NRC event.

Foote on a Streak
Bain Foote of Monroe wracked up yet another victory this year at the Twin
City Challenge, winning the road race in the two-day event in his home town.
Foote finished just ahead of his two team mates, Frank Moak and Troy
Porter. "It was a 1-2-3 finish for us this weekend in both events.
It's just nice that I've got such a dependable team. We're really
flying right now." Foote was referring to the day before where it was
another all Herring podium for the Time Trial. Frank Moak put in the
fastest time of the day with a 13:10 for 10km  with Bain Foote in second
place at 4 seconds and Troy Porter in third at 30 seconds.

Bain was still riding high from his double victory at the Giro de
Brandon two-stage omnium. Foote won both the crit on Saturday and the
road race on Sunday. Both victories were from small break-aways
consisting of mainly Herring riders. The Omnium finished up with Troy
Porter in second overall, Moak in third and Tim Regan in fourth.

Stokes is Back... (on the track)
Chirs Stokes won the overall omnium at the NOBC Night at the Track.
Stokes, recovering from bad judgement about simi-retirement won three of
the five events at the Baton Rouge Velodrome beating out Farrell Crane
(GCCA).  It's been a little while since Stokes had the fitness to be
competitive and we all look forward to seeing him return as a real
threat on the track and at the finish of road events.

Frank Moak Wins at Home: MSGP
Brookhaven is home for Frank Moak. It is where he lives, works, rides
and even races. This year, at the Human Performance Center's
Mississippi Grand Prix, it was a little different. he Won! A hard
fought battle between Herring Gas and Plano Cycling of Plano Texas
made for a tension packed weekend ending with Moak finishing just three
seconds ahead of Nick Kiernan (Plano).

The first volley was thrown by Tim Regan, winning the opening 'Bank
of Brookhaven Crit in a hard fought field sprint, being led out by
Chris Alexander and Troy Porter. Regan capped this off by taking second the
next day in the 77 mile 'Copiah Bank Road Race' behind Steen Rose of
Texas.

Regan now held the race lead heading into the four-mile time trial. The lead
wouldn't hold though, as he lost 29 seconds to Leo Frayre (Richardson
Bike Mart) in the time trial. This left Foote and Moak in
the hot seat as being the best placed Herring riders in third and fifth
place after the time trial.

The final circuit race could not have been more dramatic. The only
chance for a Herring victory, or for that matter a victory by Plano
was to get away from Leo Frayre (Richardson Bike Mart). Frayre dominated
the time trial, but faced a hilly, tough circuit race, with no team
mates. Bellau opened it up by setting a blistering pace off the front
in an early break started by Jaime Arrieta and Bryan Goins (both of
Plano). The gap grew to a dangerous level before the pack started to
fall apart. First to bridge up to the Herring- Plano break was Chris
Alexander, Porter, Rob Konrad (Adams Bicycle World), Allen
Thompson (Greorgia Velo), Aaron Smathers (Plano) and Realdo Jessurun
(NOBC). The gap grew even further, but at this point, there was still
no one dangerous from the time trial. A few laps later, it became
clear how the race would work out when both Nick Kiernan (Plano) and
Moak blasted across the gap within a couple of laps. The only
one missing was the race leader. Virtual leader at this point was
Moak. With both the Herring boys and the Plano team splitting the
work, ensuring that the race leader would not bridge back up, Moak and
Kiernan only had to worry about each other.  Two laps to go and Kiernan
attacks with Moak and Thompson close behind. The three escapees lapped
the field and blasted to the front with Kiernan taking the stage win,
Thompson second and Moak in third place for the overall win. The trio all
received the same time for the circuit race, giving Moak just enough
time for the win. Moak was thrilled to win such a big and successful
race in his home town. He bought the team dinner.

Porter/Bellau Take Victories at Tour le Fleur
The Tour le Fleur criterium is more like a circuit race. This year,
the course traveled in the reverse direction from last year, making
for a difficult uphill finish. Porter, still riding strong from
several races back home in Australia set off on an early attack. He
was later caught by Moak, Bryan Bunch, Regan, Alexander and
Foote (all of Herring), Hunter East (Dr. Feelgood) and Realdo
Jessurun (NOBC). It was a Herring-heavy break with Porter slipping off
the front with 10 difficult laps remaining. Alexander noticed a
little slowing by the chasers and lept off the front as well. Porter
finished well ahead of the chasers with Alexander coming in shortly
after and a strong Hunter East soloed in for third.

The road race the following day was stacked with a few more riders.
Several had come in from a race in Anniston, AL to do the Tour Le
Fleur road race. Immediately after the start, Bellau, responding to an
attack from Brent Thompson (Memphis Motor Werks) found himself off the
front with Ben Schuler (NBO) and David Coppinger (Pro Bikes). This was
all within the first mile! The break grew eventually to over three minutes
with Bellau pushing the pace and keeping the gap growing. With
Coppinger gone at mile 40 and  Schuler fading hard after 60 miles off
the front, Porter was able to bridge the gap. Shuler finally cracked
on one of the several grinding, steep hills on the back side of the
course, which left Bellau and Porter a dangerous duo off the front.
They rolled in with arms raised giving Bellau the victory and Porter,
adding to his first place the day before, took the overall win for the
weekend omnium.

Coming Soon
The Herring Gas Team wishes to build on their successes this year.
Future races on the schedule include several NRC races in Charlotte,
Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City, National Championships in Utah and
Chicago, and even an international stage race in late summer. The team welcomes
anyone who wishes to caravan to any race in the U.S. We would love to
show anyone from the deep South how competitive a small group of guys,
from way down yonder, can be racing against anyone in the country.

Wanted to Buy
From audraray33@...
I am looking for a used rode bike trainer. My step dad had his knee replaced
and his physical therapist said this is what he needed at home for his bike
since his therapist does not want him to ride on the
open rode in case he was to fall until his knee heals completely. I  would
like to purchase a used basic trainer, not top of the line because he will
not have to use it too long.

That's it from here.
