<<<Saturday, May 7 Set for Miles for Smile Bike Tour>>>
The Lions Clubs of Louisiana are presenting the annual Miles for
Smiles bike tour, including rides of an assorted distances and
terrains in the heart of the Felicianas. Sign up via active.com or
call 225.924.3619 to get a printed copy of the flyer. Unfortunately
web site details have not been updated. Staging is set as has been
for many years at Hemingbough Plantation located right off U.S.
Highway 61 just south of St. Francisville.
Key sponsor Mike Rourke has worked closely with the Lions Clubs to
present the event each year. Easily, there arte three or more Lions
Club volunteers for each rider who participates. Over the years, not
a single participant has left the event without a nice door prize. If
you're looking for a bank for your charitable sponsorship buck, this
is the event for you, said Rourke.
While there will be lots of touring type riders involved, many regular
competitive riders use the event for some good training and mileage
base. Rourke said there are already lots of riders signed up, but
there room for many more to participate. Every nickel of funds raised
for the event goes to support the Lions Club camp for handicapped
children in Leesville, not far from the famous bike racing hot spot
known as Hodges Gardens. Additionally funds go to the Lions Club Eye
Foundation based in New Orleans and serving the visually impaired
across the state.
As a participant, if you need financial aid and would like to
participate, contact us at the above phone number or email

The tour will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2005, beginning at 8:30

help this worthy cause. The entry fee is $35 per person, and we will
have tee-shirts, bike mechanics, an escort vehicle and a sag vehicle,

<<<One-Day Bike Race Set for Baton Rouge>>>
From Kyle Boudreaux
Delta Racing club is hosting a pair of events on the first Saturday
of June in Baton Rouge, which will include a road race in the
afternoon and a time trial in the morning. The time trial will be a
two-man event that will go something like this:
two-person teams in the same race category go off handicapped
according to road race performances. Their time will give them a
certain number of points when combined with the afternoon road race
points to produce a winner. The time trial will be nine-miles, one
way, flat loop on River Road (along the levee), starting at 7:30
a.m. at the split. We plan to start with the juniors and conclude
with the category 1,2,3's. If you don't have a partner or teammate
for the time trial, you can do it by yourself. There will be no
combining of race categories. The road race will consist of the same
course as the time trial, but you will do it several times. It starts
at noon.
Juniors = 3laps
Females = 4 laps
Category 5s = 4 laps
Category 4s = 5 laps
Masters = 6 laps
Categories 1,2,3s = 6 laps
The event counts for LaMBRA points and will be a USCF-sanctioned
event. We need officials, so if your available let me know. Call
225.205.6107 for more information.

<<<Week-Day Time Trial Series Starts in Shreveport Area; May 12 Next
Event>>>
From Alan Moore
The first 7.35-time trial of the competitive cycling series went off
without a hitch. We had good weather and everyone seemed to like the
new, faster course and we had 29 riders show up. Somehow I think it
will increase the next time! Many thanks to our visitors from Monroe
and Dallas who gave it a go. Shannon Koch came within seconds of
Kathleen Wiener's course record for the second fastest time ever
recorded there by a female-type person. Nathan Rogut became just the
third person to record a sub-16-minute time behind Russ Walker and
Jack Ditt (who holds the record of 15:28). Results are posted at

<<<Ripples Plan New Sports Facility in Baton Roug>>>
According to the Baton Rouge Business Report, pediatric dentist Steve
Ripple is investing $500,000 to create a 31,000-square-foot sports
training facility in space rented from Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. The
CAP Elite training facility located at the Ketcham Fitness Center
will feature a 2,000-square-foot Olympic Mondo track with incline
ramp for endurance training, football turf, basketball and volleyball
courts, and exercise equipment. The facility will open in mid May. An
eight-lane, 25-meter pool will be completed this summer. Ripple
signed a 10-year lease with Jimmy Swaggart for the space. He is
reserving 500 square feet for future sublease
to a physical therapy group. Leach and former Saints receiver Brett
Bech will focus on the development of 7- to 18 year-olds, and the
facility will train college and pro athletes in their off-season.
Ripple and wife Jan, a world champion silver medal tri-athlete, own
and operate Crawfish Aquatics swim program next door to CAP Elite.
