"If I had not had so much ambition and had not tried to do so many
things, I probably would have been happier, but less useful."

Andy Theil 5km Set Saturday in Abita Springs
From Sue Boudreaux
Don't forget about the Andy Thiel 5km race this weekend in Abita
Springs on Saturday at 8 a.m. It is being produced by high school
twin brothers, who want to honor their high school track coach, Andy
Thiel, who was also Donnie Jarrell's track coach at SLU in Hammond.
Coach Thiel wants the proceeds donated to the Donnie Jarell
Foundation. If anyone wants to also get a ride in that day, or
possibly a duathlon, I am thinking of riding 20 miles first, running
the 5km, and then riding another 80 miles or so. There is also a
mile fun run at 9 a.m. for the kids.

Note of Thanks from 2004 Multisporter of Louisiana
From Laurence Cohen
I would like to publicly offer my thanks for the honor of being
named, along with Sue Boudreaux, Louisiana Multisporter of the
Year. I am humbled to have won an award that was also bestowed on
Donnie Jarrell, the bravest individual I have ever met.
I am sure that Sue would agree that it is nice to be recognized by
the community we care so much about even though we are not the
swiftest or strongest. I am glad that you linked Sue and me
together because I know her to be among the most well-liked and well-
respected multisporters in the state.
As two of the elder statespersons still competing, we both know that
the sport does not begin and end at the races. It is a healthy
lifestyle that encourages sharing time and energy to help others
acieve their potential.
Thanks to all those folks who wrote letters of recommendation - not
just on my behalf, but for everyone else who merited mention. Thanks
to all the race directors and volunteers who gave all us "A" types
an outlet for our energy. A big tip of the hat to all the spouses
and family members who allow us to be out there training and racing.
BR Off-Road Adventure Racers Score Well in Texas Taking First Place
Team Backpacker/The Bicycle Shope opened up their Adventure Race
season at Martin Dies state park in Southeast Texas this weekend.
Team Backpacker consist of Dave Bogle (Destrehan), Misty Richard
(Denham Springs), Jeff Diamond and Darius Sampey (Baton Rouge). The
Martin Dies Adventure Race was the opening race for the Texas Steel
Sports Adventure Race series. The race was set for 12 hours.
Team Backpacker/The Bicycle Shop completed the entire course four
hours before the cut in a time of 7:58 for a first place win. They
were 92 minutes ahead of Werewolves of Austin and 103 minutes ahead
of Team Need to Bleed. The course was very flat with 25 check points
spread throughout a large area including the Angelina River. All
toll the teams did 17 miles of paddling, 17 miles of mountain
biking, 8 miles of running/trekking/, 3 miles of skating/scootering
and several special climbing test.
The Steel Sports series is a bit more challenging than the Louisiana
adventure races in that teams are only given UTM coordinates and
have to plot their own points on the given maps. The course was
fairly wet as it had rained the previous two days, making for
an even more challenging experience. Team Backpacker/The Bicycle
Shop's next Steel Sports race will be a 72 hour race in the Caprock
Canyons of Northwest Texas on March 17-19. Team members look forward
to their next race, which will be the Louisiana Adventure Race
series opener on March 12 in the spillway near Norco, LA. where the
team will compete against Louisiana's best Adventure Race teams.
Bike Path on Miss. River Levee Progressing in Baton Rouge
From Bruce Wickert
For those who haven't had a chance to see the construction underway
on the levee top multiuse path in Baton Rouge, it is a major
project. I checked it out as part of a tour of the capital city by
bike, enjoying the cool, but dry weather (contrary to the forecast).
The ascent paths at Skip Bertman Road (at the LSU Vet School) have
been poured, a bridge over the Terrace Street pipelines is complete
and some but probably not all of the dirt work is complete. There is
still a lot to go, but having seen the scope of the work underway,
this is not a second class project.
If anyone within the sound of my voice knows of a projected
completion date, kindly reply and let the rest of us know. The Bike-
Ped group, including BRBC would like to mark its opening as a
community event.

Duathlete Missed in La. Multisport Rankings
From William Rolston
First let me say that I so appreciate the hard work and diligence in
once again putting together the 2004 multisport rankings. I am a
fairly well known age group competitor in Louisiana, as well as the
Gulf Coast area and though I competed mostly out of state again this
year, I did manage "podium" finishes in Crawfishman Du, Du Donnie Du
and fall edition of Pelicanman Du]. Somehow, this was not noted in
the state's duathlon rankings. This is not a criticism, nor do I
want "props" for the effort, but look for me in the coming year as I
once again expect to be supporting and participating in the events
that we all love. Best wishes on the upcoming rankings at the end
of the year. Watch out for those 60-64 year old age groupers.
