Rouge Roubaix VI History; Plans Being Finalized
From Salty Glavis
For those who are interested, the Rouge-Roubaix VI bicycle race/ride
is set for Sunday, March 6, beginning at 8 a.m. (That's the start
time for the A race. It's 8:30 a.m. for those interested in doing
the event but not competing for a racing finish.) The event starts
at the St. Francis Hotel on the Lake in St. Francisville.
Sign up via active.com.
For those who are unaware of what Rouge-Roubaix is, the event was
originally invented by Jon Anderson in 1999 (Rouge-Roubaix I) to
give local racers and cyclists an idea of what the Paris-Roubaix
professional event held every year in France is like. While
Louisiana can't boast many cobblestone-paved roadways such as the
Paris-Roubaix event covers, Anderson -- now living in Minnesota --
did great job establishing a 100-mile course that includes
approximately 20 miles of dirt and gravel sections, some of which
are in the Tunica Hills, some of the steepest hills Louisiana has to
offer (rivaling and exceeding Red Bluff's locally notorious hills in
steepness, only on dirt and gravel).
For those who are interested in more details, you can go to the
event's website, whose URL is:
http://www.batonrougecycling.com/Rouge_Roubaix/Rouge_Roubaix.htm
<
http://www.batonrougecycling.com/Rouge_Roubaix/Rouge_Roubaix.htm> .
The website currently notes the date of last year's event, but the
facts and details of the event will likely remain the same for 2005.
I highly recommend this event to those who of you who believe you're
fit enough to survive a 100-mile bike ride that requires you to ride
a road bike up (and down) 15 percent-grade hills on loose dirt, sand
and gravel. Truthfully, while it's not easy, it's really a blast!
The paved sections of the route are awesome and the whole route is
one of the most scenic and beautiful you'll ever experience in
Louisiana.
If you're interested in doing the race, you might want to consider
spending Saturday evening at the St. Francis Hotel on the Lake, 225/
635-3821. Call me at 985/727-2345 or email
saltyg@... for

Armstrong will ride Tour de France 2005
After much speculation, Lance Armstrong finally announced his
initial 2005 racing schedule, one that will include this summer's
Tour de France where he will go for a seventh straight victory.
"I look forward to achieving my goal of a seventh Tour de France
(victory)," said Armstrong to the paceline.com. "I am excited to get
back on the bike and start racing although my condition is far from
perfect," he added.
Also on Armstrong's racing schedule is the Tour de Georgia in April,
an event the American won in 2004. As already confirmed, Armstrong
will kick off his season early next month at Paris-Nice, a seven-day
stage race and the first event of the newly formed Pro Tour.
Following Paris-Nice, Armstrong will take part in the 89th edition
of the Tour of Flanders, one of Europe's most prestigious Spring
Classics, on April 3. Armstrong last raced in the Tour of Flanders
in 2002, finishing 59th in support of his team's leader. Armstrong
will then return to the U.S. and defend his title at the
Tour de Georgia, scheduled for April 19-25.
"Johan (Bruyneel, the team's sports manager) and I will evaluate my
fitness later this spring and possibly add some races to the
calendar," said Armstrong.
Remember that the Abitaman Triathlon early registration deadline is
this Sunday, Feb. 28.
