"Do you qualify to be alive or is the limit of your senses so as only
to survive...? Ray Stevens
Check out some interesting notes on IT band injuries on this web site:

Bob Sigerson of Covington corrected my notes from last week's
Multisport Report enewsletter. He said there are three people from
Louisiana elected to the USA Triathlon regional board. They are Mark
Salvetti of Mandeville, Della Irby and Houston Jones of Lake Charles.
Terry Kincaid from West Monroe, also a USA Triathlon board member
last year, deserves a big thank you, too. He was pivotal in getting
the Frost Yer Fanny and regional awards banquet to Louisiana and was
also responsible for getting out lots of USA Tri members out to vote
the north Louisiana, Sigerson added.
Lake Charles area multisporters were eager to report that the T-Gator
Duathlon was voted "Best Small Duathlon" the USA Triathlon region.
Don't forget the Feb. 19 Evangeline Oak Duathlon is set and ready for
downtown St. Martinville not far from Breaux Bridge. Check out the
event details and sign up via active.com.
The Baton Rouge Bicycle Club's Spring Century will be Sunday May 1
from the West Feliciana Sports Park (which is the same place as last
year). Mark your calendar and save your nickels, dimes a quarters
for a great ride, and watch for it on Active.com.
Speaking of the capital city, there's a big fitness-related issue
going on that needs feedback. There's talk of turning Baton Rouge's
City Park Golf Course into a New York City-styled Central Park. The
question is can "big little Baton Rouge" sustain such a project.
Wonderful as the proposals sound, my concern is how enduring will the
energy behind the idea last. I fear it'll get bogged down in
bureaucratic silly stuff that will result in a mediocre project at
best. Right now we have literally miles and miles of run/walk/cycling
area that surround a golf course that is marked as one of the city's
rare historical landmarks. I have no love loss for the golfers
there (who seemed more anti-run, anti-bike) I've encountered there
from time, to time, but on this issue and the way it's being handled
so far, I for one vote to leave the golf course alone. Log onto
www.brec.org you can take a survey about what City Park ought to be
like. They are apparently getting a number of folks saying that
jogging and biking trails would be used frequently. Add your voice.
I hear the 2005 MS Tour for Cure 150 miler is the buzz in bike event
fund raising. There's always a large turnout from this event staged
in Hammond that goes to McComb, MS. Stay tuned for more details, but
I hear that motel rooms are being snapped up pretty quick for those
doing or working on the well-supported ride the Florida Parishes.
Mardi Gras Marathon Happening During Lent
From Chuck George
The 2005 event is fewer than 30 days away. Our flat and fast course
takes you through the French Quarter, Esplanade Ridge, Bayou St.
John, Garden District, Uptown, and Audubon Park.
New Orleans is below sea level, with the exception of one overpass,
you're running below sea-level the entire time on the course. The
finish is inside the Louisiana Superdome, host of more NFL Superbowls
than any other city. You'll be the champion on Feb 27th. The event
features a 5km, half marathon and of course the featured marathon.

USA Cycling Sends Note on Olympic Preparations
From Gerard Bisceglia
USA Cycling is embarking on not only a new year but a new, four-year
Olympic cycle that will prepare and take our American road, track,
mountain bike, and the latest cycling discipline added to the
Olympics, BMX, athletes to the Games in Beijing in 2008.
As the sole governing body for competitive cycling recognized by the
U.S.Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Cycling has dual but equal
objectives. We must provide the best support and service to our
50,000 members and event promoters. We are also challenged to
identify, develop, train and support the athletes who represent our
nation in international competition including World Championships
each year and the Olympic Games every four years.
You may not know that USA Cycling and the USOC do not receive any
government funding. Most of the counties who excel in the medal count
at the Olympic Games are largely funded by their countries'
governments. As host country for the 2008 Olympic Games, the Chinese
government is investing heavily in its country's athletes in every
sport.
We rely solely on the support and generosity of corporations and
donors to fuel the Olympic movement in the United States. America's
generosity has been rewarded by our dedicated athletes, who
consistently placed the USA Number 1 in the overall medal count and
Number 1 in the gold medal count at the past few Summer Olympic Games.
I trust and hope that you will be renewing your USA Cycling racing
license very soon. When you do renew, I am asking that you consider
an additional donation to our Olympic hopefuls by scrolling down
to "Optional Donations"if you renew online at (www.usacycling.org) or
by making the appropriate designations on your license application
should you renew your license by mail. We would like to thank those
members who have already renewed their 2005 licenses and have
collectively donated more than $14,000 to support our athletes.
We had an exceptional Olympic cycling team in Athens that brought
home four Olympic medals in 2004. We want that cycling medal count to
double in Beijing. Our cycling athletes need your help.
On behalf of all these dedicated athletes and the staff of USA
Cycling, I thank you in advance for your generosity.
