"The friend who holds your hand and says the wrong thing is made of dearer stuff than the one who stays away."
Barbara Kingsolver
Chuck George of the New Orleans Track Club reminded me that the Jan. 16th
Jackson Day Run is the 98th edition and not what had been earlier reported.
Runner's World magazine has consistently called this a "must do" for runners
racing at venues around the world. Get the details on this January event at
runNOTC.com.
Feb. 20 is set for the Highland Mardi Gras 5km in Shreveport. Contact

We are well on our way to finishing the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. I so appreciate all of you who have helped and offered thoughts, corrections, clarifications, and updates. I know some will be missed; it just happens with so many racing these days in all sorts of multisport events. But know that I've searched high and low to make sure our publication is accurate and informational. Stay tuned.
By the way, if you have changed your land mail address, I need updates for you to receive your free printed copy in the mail. Email or call me with details.
It's an interesting day today as I celebrate the anniversary of my entry into the world. I'm one year closer to a new age group, one year closer to Senior Olympics, and many pounds heavier than I care to be. The challenge for me is to acknowledge change, adjust to it, manage it, accept it, then realize there will forever be change in life. Oh, so profound I know. So I ramble.
New Orleans Area Cyclists Urged to Attend Meeting on Bridges
The Regional Planning Commission is inviting interested citizens to attend a
series of public meetings to discuss a proposed new roadway bridge crossing
the Harvey Canal, either at Harvey Blvd. or Lapalco Blvd.
It is critical for the cycling community that cycling interests be
represented at these meetings. The Harvey Canal is a significant
impediment to cycling on the West Bank and without cyclists representation
at this stage of the project, cycling enhancements are likely to be ignored.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13th, Woodland West
Elementary School
2143 Mars St. in Kenner.
The materials to be presented and discussed will be the same at both
meetings but both meetings may be attended.
The primary purpose of the meetings is to provide information and receive
public comments on design alternatives for the proposed new Harvey Canal
Bridge. This is an excellent opportunity for us to improve the future
safety and enjoyment of cycling on the West Bank and to increase the
awareness of cycling enhancement requirements for those responsible for
roadway project designs.
In addition to attending these meetings, written statements or comments may
be submitted at the meeting or may be mailed to the project consultant
(postmarked by Jan. 23, 2005) at:
N-Y Associates, Inc.

Mobile, AL Sets Mardi Gras Theme for Joe Cain Day 5km Run on Feb. 6
By running for a good cause on Joe Cain Day in Mobile, Alabama. Come and
experience Mardi Gras the way it's supposed to be: fun, food, friends.
We've got a great run on a great course set for Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005. It
will be the 15th annual Joe Cain Classic 5km.
This race has grown every year since its inaugural in 1991, and it is
considered by many within the competitive running community to be the third
largest race in Mobile. Last year more than 500 runners, walkers and
wheelchair entrants participated in the event. The Joe Cain Classic is more
than a 5km run, which by the way is a USTAF certified course. It is also a
family event featuring a one-mile walk/run and a quarter-mile "Moon Pie"
dash that involves (mostly) children. After the running events, there is a
large block party with food, refreshments, music and great door prizes for
all participants. This year, being the 15th Annual, we have a special Mardi
Gras Tie Dyed t-shirt. Your early registration will guarantee you one.
Since 2001, proceeds from each year's race have been donated to challenged
athletes, and the generous support of our sponsors has enabled us to provide
much needed funding for wheelchairs, training camps and other support for
physically challenged athletes. For 2005 we have chosen MARC (Mobile
Association for Retarded Citizens) to be the recipient of the race proceeds.
The recreation department at MARC is especially going to benefit from this
race not only financially but by motivating the special citizens helped by
MARC to run their first road race. We've been told they have been training
and look forward to the challenge.
To register for the 2005 Joe Cain Classic you may go online to
www.active.com, or print the attached application and mail, or "e" me back
and I'll be glad to mail you applications for your entire group. If you are
unable to attend the run but would still like to help us support MARC, you
may mail your tax-deductible donation to Bay Area Runners, P.O. Box 2161,
Daphne, AL 36526 and mark it donation for MARC. If you would like to help
with the race in any way please call Jim Duff at 251/709-6363.
The Bay Area Runners would like to express our gratitude for your generosity
and your support of the Joe Cain Classic. Please forward this e-mail to all
of your members.
