Greetings fellow collectors,

The chain on my newest acquisition (as of today) is a Miyata 610.  The previous owner put in a rear derailleur that is now failing.  I don't want to break the bank but would appreciate suggestions on what replacement derailler to look for.  It has a triple ring Fuji front crank set and raleigh shifters.  The spring in the rear doesn't spring back quickly.

Thanks,

Well, I received my leather grip wrap yesterday and it looks good (though I haven't wrapped my bars yet). And, although nobody has made a peep in response to this posting, Harry tells me he got some responses and is sending out samples to you shortly.

The samples he sent me are very simple black top grain leather with water treatment and something called "pro-tac" for grippyness. He isn't making lots of colors yet but plans to. He also hasn't begun perforating or embossing it yet, but he plans to do that too. Anyway, to those of you who jumped on this (or subsequently reply to Harry), hope you enjoy it.

I paid $375 for my 618, and it's great. The most comfortable, easy handling and efficient bike I own.

When I think about the years of service that I will have from this bike, it's peanuts plus change. The frame/bike is worth what someone is willing to pay. Please don't think that the 610 is miles behind the 1000, it's not like that at all. I have heard from others that actually prefer it for their riding preferences. I don't own a 1000 but I do have an Expedition and Centurion Pro Tour plus a Miyata Ridge Runner SE. The SE for all practical purposes is a touring bike with 26" wheels. All that said, the Miyata 610 is a very fine machine. If you can get one for 100., go for it!!! If your selling one, consider getting a bit more.

Just like Real Estate where the rule is location, location, location. The rule
for middle to high end Miyata's would be condition, condition, condition. Of
course thats just my opinion.

I'd say a hundred bucks for a bike thats been neglected but the frame is
restorable would be a fair buy. On the other hand I have no problem paying a
premium for a bike thats been well taken care of and is somewhat original. The
bike will show that it was treated with care and was maintained properly, that
in itself means a lot to me.

If you were to replace a 1000 with an equal new bike (and by equal I mean a
quality lugged frame) you'd spend well over a thousand for the frame alone.

These vintage Miyata's are still somewhat available but they won't be forever.
The same can be said for many other quality brands of vintage bikes.

Cheers

It's interesting to follow the "what's the bike worth?" conversations.

I have had a 610, 615, currently have a 618, 1000, Panasonic Pro Touring and a Bridgestone XO-1. I prefer to pay as little for them as possible and if I sell them, I want what they're worth.

There were enough Miyatas made that they can still be found in good shape. Because I'm always nosing around for bikes, I wouldn't pay a lot for one, but selling one is a different story. They are worth a great deal because of their quality and performance. Buying a new bike built as well as the Miyata might set a person back a lot of money.

I guess it all depends on whether you're buying or selling as to what's a fair price. I'll bet that most would agree that a 610 in good shape is certainly worth $100.

One hundred dollars for a Miyata 610 is cheap, providing it is in good condition. The $400 price for the pristine Miyata 610 is a very good buy. Most of the sellers do not know what they have and sell the bike too cheaply.

As an example I was talking to a gentleman two days ago about bikes. He told me he had a Gitane Tour de France with all campy components. Phil said he was planning to sell it at a garage sell for $15. I enlightened him about the bike and told him to sell it on E-bay. It may sell for $1,000 or more.

We have a nationally known bike shop in our area. The owner told be he could sell my Miyata 1000LT for between $1,500 and $2,000. I estimate replacement costs for a Miyata 610 frame and matching fork is on the order of $1,200 to $1,500. Frame and fork replacement costs for a Miyata 1000LT is probably $1,800 to $2,000.

I have a lead on a 1981 Miyata 1000.  The fellow said he has put some $ in fixing it up but I didn't get long to talk to hime.

Question:  What would be a fair price for one in good condition?

Please help as I will call him back in about an hour.

Hi Paul, thank you for the kind words. I used Class Act in Portland and I am amazed at the result. The wheelset is based on the nicest bike components I have ever owned, a set of Maxi-Car hi flange hubs, NOS from the 80's? perhaps. I bought them from a Classics Rendezvous member who had purchased 2 sets from France. The rims are Sun CR-18's polished (40 hole). The cork is regular "natural" colored stuff from my LBS with tinted shellac. I think the tinting product is called "trans-tint" and I just added until I found the desired color (somewhat matching the saddle).

Chris asked:

<<What is the seatpost diameter and does it change through the years?>>

Seatpost diameter for the classic Expeditions was 26.8mm, as it was on
most every Miyata model of that era.

Thanks Walt. Nice bike, If I ever find an Expedition I think I might paint it
some shade of red.

Hi Paul, thank you for the kind words. I used Class Act in Portland and I am
amazed at the result. The wheelset is based on the nicest bike components I
have ever owned, a set of Maxi-Car hi flange hubs, NOS from the 80's? perhaps.
I bought them from a Classics Rendezvous member who had purchased 2 sets from
France. The rims are Sun CR-18's polished (40 hole). The cork is regular
"natural" colored stuff from my LBS with tinted shellac. I think the tinting
product is called "trans-tint" and I just added until I found the desired color
(somewhat matching the saddle).

An auto paint store may have something like a DuPont color chart that might be matched at a Hobby Lobby type place

George,
I just looked at the pics and she looks great.

Who did you use as a powder coater?
What wheel set are you going with?
What bar tape & shellac did you use?

Again, very nicely done.

Paul C

Hi Chris,
I've added a closeup photo of my setup on a 1981 1000, its a Shimano clamp and
has the modern adjustments, I find it works real well.

Good luck with your build, Walt
