Is my 1000 up to the challenge?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1207 of 2596 |
Hello All,
Ahhhh.... spring is here for us on the Northern hemisphere. And I am
fortunate to be going on a last minute trip to Holland and Belgium at
the end of this month for the "tulip tours". I'll be going solo for
about 5 days and don't have much time to prepare. So my question,
which might be impartial given the membership of this forum, will my
1981 1000 with mostly stock parts (i.e., Apex crank, DiaC brakes, 27
inch Sunshine wheels) be dependable for about 75 to 100 miles each
day? I'm not planning on going full touring, but roughly a century per
day for five days. My only modifications to the bike was swapping out
the bars to Nitto Swans and has been functioning as a demoralized
"coffee getter" the past 6 months. I want to eventually return it to a
full rigged tour bike at some point, but don't have the time at the
moment (I was planning that for a summer or fall project later this
year). I have about 10 other bikes in my stable, but narrowed it down
to taking a 2003 Gunnar Roadie Custom with most newer 105 and SRAM
component, if the Miyata is not up to the challenge. The best thing
about the bike are the XTR wheels with Tufo tubular tires which IMHO
are by far the most flat resistant tires in the market. My primary
concern would be the reliability of the 1000, I have not done anything
with it since buying it from a local. I know the headset and BB could
use a rebuild as well as the hubs. Any guidance from this group would
be much appreciated. BTW, I'm in Edison NJ, any forumers from these
parts?

I would be more worried about the airline than I would be the Miyata's reliability, so why not take it? Ride down to Keyport, then to Sandy Hook and then ride...

I rode my Miyata 610 35 miles per day for almost 90 days one summer. The bike can take it. But why not just get the bottom bracket and headset repacked? It...

Hello, Edison, NJ, I think a 1000 would be more than up to the ride. I'd second the motion to redo the bearings, altho not absolutely essential. What I would...

Hello qclabrat, Continuing the bias of the group, I would certainly recommend lifting up the "demoralized" spirits of your faithful coffee-getter and give her...

Not a problem Ted I'll certainly update the group on how she held out. Which means I've decided to go with the Miyata. I've taken up the recommendations and...
