For Barry Bonds, the awards and records continue to pile up. Bonds won his second straight MVP award for an unprecendented fifth time. Bonds was chosen unanimously over the Cardinals' Albert Pujols. Bonds, 38, finished the season with a Major League-leading .370 average to become the oldest first-time batting champion in MLB history. He broke his own year-old big-league record by walking 198 times -- including a record-breaking 68 intentional free passes -- while shattering Ted Williams' 60-year-old mark by reaching base at a .582 clip. AL MVP for Tejada
Miguel Tejada
New Face: Tejada
There was no shortage of material to support naming Oakland A's shortstop Miguel Tejada as the American League Most Valuable Player. Tejada set career highs in batting average (.308), hits (204), RBIs (131), home runs (34), total bases (.336), runs (108) on-base percentage (.354), fielding percentage (.975) and slugging percentage (.508). He hit .325 with 19 homers in the season's second half -- including a dramatic homer off All-Star Eddie Guardado to beat the Twins on Sept. 1, extending Oakland's winning streak to 18 games on the way to an AL-record 20 -- as the A's stormed to the AL West title. Full story >
And the winner is ... Baseball's West Wing. Miguel Tejada's coronation as AL MVP dropped the curtain on MLB's awards season, over a week-long buffet of honors that confirmed the Major League's 2002 playing field tilted toward the Left Coast. With the Athletics' shortstop joining his Bay Area neighbor, unanimous NL MVP Barry Bonds of the Giants, six of this season's top eight awards have been bestowed on West Division luminaries. Only NL Manager of the Year Tony La Russa, of the Central Division Cardinals, and AL Rookie of the Year Eric Hinske, of the East Division Blue Jays, were able to crack the West stronghold.

On the day the free agent market officially opened for all comers, Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ed Wade sprinted to the front of the order counter.
Infielder Tomas Perez has come out of the gates hitting in the Venezuelan Winter League. Perez is hitting .357 through his first seven games. Likewise, infielder Nick Punto has posted a .270 average in 26 games playing for Culiacan in the Puerto Rican League with five doubles and 12 RBI. Punto, who stole 42 bases for triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this past season, has six steals so far to go along with his .391 on-base percentage.
PHILLIES BALLPARK RED STEEL REACHES ITS HIGHEST POINT
The excitement of building a world-class Ballpark continues! The signature red-colored steel being installed in the scoreboard structure of the Phillies Ballpark has reached its highest point. Throughout 2002 and into 2003 red steel will continue to be installed in a counterclockwise direction around the site, where approximately 11,800 structural steel pieces will be erected for the construction of the Ballpark.
After celebrating a successful groundbreaking for the new Phillies Spring Training Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida on October 16, work at the site is progressing well. The existing structures on the site have been removed and construction is underway. The 7,000-seat ballpark, with a distinctive Floridian feel, will be built directly adjacent to the Carpenter Complex, near the intersection of US 19 and Drew Streets. With a 14-month construction schedule, the new ballpark will open in January, 2004, just a few months ahead of the Phillies New Ballpark.

BALLPARK CONSTRUCTION TEAM FORMS SAFETY PARTNERSHIP WITH OSHA
A signing ceremony held this past October at the Phillies Ballpark Project Office marked an important milestone in the history of Philadelphia construction sites. (Pictured: John Henshaw, Asst. Sec. of Labor and Jack Robertson, Driscoll/Hunt)
During this event the Phillies Ballpark construction management team Driscoll/Hunt (a joint venture), in association with Synterra/Todd, formed a Safety Partnership Agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) at the Phillies Ballpark construction site.
This is the first OSHA safety partnership formed at a construction site in the Philadelphia region, and it will serve as a model for future construction safety programs. Through innovation in safety management, the partnership will encourage more active participation in the safety process for everyone involved at the jobsite. One of the important objectives of this partnership is to bring the recordable illness and injury rates below the national average.

The champagne went on ice in late afternoon. Then John Lackey -- the first rookie in 93 years to win a Game 7 -- took the mound against the Giants, a human block of ice who refused to crack under pressure. In their first two series this postseason, the Angels lost Game 1, then went on to sweep the Yankees and the Twins. But if they want to continue that pattern against the Giants, they'll have to win three straight at Pac Bell Park. No easy task, especially since October phenom Livan Hernandez -- thus far immune to playoff pressure -- takes the hill in San Francisco for Game 3.

URBAN LEGENDS
Tim Salmon
What we've learned
Game 1 of the World Series was beautiful baseball at its best. Big hits, clutch pitching and a 4-3 victory for the Giants. Game 2, an 11-10 affair won by the Angels, was a jaw-dropping display of power. For that matter, this October, scoreboards are lighting up with home runs at a record pace. Barry Bonds and Troy Glaus have six homers apiece, each one shy of the all-time high for a single postseason.
Urban Legends takes a look back at the first two games of this World Series and discovers that these teams really are as evenly matched as advertised ... which should make this October a true classic. Full story >
From Barry Bonds' monumental blast in his first ever World Series at-bat to J.T. Snow's crowd-silencing two-run shot in the sixth, Game 1 was a classic. Featuring 21 runs on 28 hits, the difference of Game 2 was Salmon, who capped a 4-for-4 night with a laser into the left-field bullpen. If you like Cinderella stories, then the Angels vs. Twins is an American League Championship Series match made in underdog heaven and one that, fittingly, will see at least two games played in Disneyland.
Two teams, neither with a single position player with postseason experience before last week, meet in an improbable series for the right to advance to the World Series in a best-of-seven series beginning Tuesday at Minnesota's Metrodome. Anaheim arrives having shocked four-time defending AL Champion New York to get here. The Twins upset heavily favored Oakland in five games.

The Phillie Phanatic is now a published author (actually, the author is his best friend Tom Burgoyne, but the Phanatic is taking all the credit!).
More Than Beards, Bellies and Biceps - The Story of the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies (and the Phillie Phanatic, too) tells the story of that "wacky, wonderful group of throwbacks" (as Harry Kalas described them) and how that team lit up the league and the city with their never-say-die attitude and their Animal House style both on and off the field. The book takes a comical look at the behind the scenes game and the history of sports' most successful mascot.
The Phillies will release a tentative version of the 2003 schedule within the next week on phillies.com. With the Phillies scheduled to play Interleague games against the AL West, the final season at the Vet is sure to be a memorable one.

STEEL GOES VERTICAL Structural Steel Raised High Above Street Level
The installation of structural steel at street level began in August at the Phillies New Ballpark project site. Beginning with the Ballpark's scoreboard structure (in the northwest quadrant) and moving in a counterclockwise direction around the project site, workers will install approximately 11,800 structural steel pieces for the construction of the Ballpark. Some of the largest pieces of steel will be used to create the signature scoreboard structure, with each piece weighing nearly 22,000 pounds and standing 65' tall.

The excitement of building 10-foot tall bronze statues of Phillies legends Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, and Richie Ashburn for the New Ballpark continues! This past August Mike Schmidt had his second sitting with Zenos Frudakis, the world-renowned artist commissioned by the Phillies to create larger-than-life statues, while Steve Carlton experienced his first meeting where he posed for both his clay bust and statue. As a part of the creative process, Frudakis meets with the players or close family members to ensure the statues represent each player as accurately as possible. Schmidt and Carlton will have several meetings with Frudakis with the unveiling of the large-scale bronze statues taking place prior to the opening of the Ballpark in 2004.

PHILLIES BALLPARK'S STEEL GOES VERTICAL: Structural Steel Raised High Above Street Level
The installation of structural steel at street level began last week at the Phillies New Ballpark project site. Beginning with the Ballpark's scoreboard structure (in the northwest quadrant) and moving in a counter clockwise direction
around the project site, workers will install approximately 11,800 structural steel pieces for the construction of the Ballpark. Some of the largest pieces of steel to be installed will be used to create the signature scoreboard structure, with each piece weighing nearly 22,000 pounds and standing 65' tall.
The average piece of steel is 42' long and will eventually be coated with three layers of paint: a primer, an intermediate layer, and a top layer of red paint. In all, there will be 11,602 gallons of paint applied to the steel -- complimenting the extraordinary visual of a breathtaking Phillies Ballpark clad in red steel, brick and stone.
