HOMESTAND RECAP

The Phillies completed the recent 8-1 homestand, including a seven-game win streak, by winning two of three over the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. Solid pitching, timely hitting and come-from-behind victories sparked an electric atmosphere at Veterans Stadium propelling the Phils to the winningest homestand since 1986. Some of the highlights were....a near no-hitter by Vincente Padilla, dramatic 9th inning homeruns from Ricky Ledee and Tomas Perez, an inside-the-park homerun by Doug Glanville, six saves and a win from closer Jose Mesa and continued All-Star play from shortstop Jimmy Rollins and third baseman Scott Rolen.

NEW BALLPARK UPDATE

Excavation is 70% complete! Workers have been digging a 23' deep hole since mid-January, making way for the Ballpark's recessed field and seating bowl. Ultimately 440,000 cubic yards, or 594,000 tons, of soil will be removed from the site.

A pair of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons received weekly honors in the Phillies minor league system for May 6-12:

RHP Eric Junge, 25, who was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 1 start, 7 innings, 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts in beating Charlotte. The win improved his season record to 4-0. He was one of two minor league pitchers acquired in the November 9, 2001, trade with the Dodgers for Omar Daal.

C Johnny Estrada, 25, who hit .636 in 5 games (14-22) with 3 doubles, 2 homers and 10 RBI. He had five consecutive multi-hit games. The weekly streak boosted his average to .398.
