Rollins agrees to $40 million extension
Two-time All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins has spent his entire professional career with the Phillies. That relationship figures to continue for a long time, as Rollins and the Phillies agreed Monday to a $40 million, five-year contract extension.
Rollins has a .269 career average with 143 stolen bases and 428 runs scored.
Rollins, 26, was eligible for free agency after the 2006 season.
His contract, which includes a $5 million signing bonus, is broken down as follows: $4.0 million in 2006; $7.0 million in 2007 and 2008; $7.5 million in 2009 and 2010.
The Phillies hold a club option for 2011 at $8.5 million or can exercise a $2 million buyout. Should the Phillies exercise the 2011 option, it would bring the total value of the contract to $47.5 million.
