ADAMS AVOIDS ARBITRATION

Adams Phillies reliever Terry Adams agreed to a one-year, $2.9 million contract on Monday, avoiding a Feb. 19 salary arbitration date.

Adams, 29, was the team's final arbitration-eligible player. His salary marks a $200,000 raise from his base salary last season and could be more with incentives. He had originally submitted a figure of $3.395 million.

PHILLIES GO SCOUTING DOWN UNDER

The Phillies' Director of Scouting Marti Wolever was recently in Australia and came back with the contract of 18-year-old catcher Grant Karlsen.

"Grant is a good-sized athlete with a solid arm," said Wolever. "He's an above average receiver with a chance to hit for power and he has great makeup."

Karlsen played for the 2002 Australian National Team. Wolever indicated this could be the first of several signings of Australian players for the Phillies.

In other scouting news, Billy Moore has been named the new West Coast Supervisor. Moore previously held that position with the Blue Jays.

PADILLA SIGNS DEAL

All-Star righthander Vicente Padilla agreed to terms on a one-year split contract. On the major league side, Padilla will make $425,000 in 2003; on the minor league side, he would make $196,000. He would also receive an additional bonus for making the All-Star team again.

"Vicente had an outstanding season for us last year," said Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. "It was a pleasant surprise that he performed as well as he did in the starting rotation. He is well rested after taking this winter off and we fully expect him to be a major part of our success in 2003."

Also agreeing to terms were righthanded pitchers Brad Baisley, Josh Hancock, Franklin Perez and Jeremy Wedel.
