Outfielder McKay Christensen, catchers Russ Jacobson and Jeremy Salazar and pitchers Jim Crowell, Geoff Geary and Cary Hiles have all been invited as non-roster players to Spring Training, Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.
These six invitees join infielder Mike Coolbaugh, catchers Jesse Levis and Todd Pratt and righthanders Gavin Floyd and Amaury Telemaco.
Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt will once again join the Phillies in Spring Training this year as a special hitting instructor beginning February 24 and staying for a week before re-joining the team March 24 for the final week of games.
The Phillies also announced the remainder of the Spring Training staff, along with the hiring of a new manager for single-A Batavia, the appointment of John Nash to oversee the disposition of Veterans Stadium property and the signing of outfielder Garry Maddox, Jr. to a minor league deal.
Due to the untimely death of his father, pitcher Jose Mesa will not be able to participate in the Phillies 35th annual Winter Tour as previously advertised. The Phillies send their sympathy to Jose and his family during this time.
Around this time next month, Jim Thome and his Phillies teammates will begin gathering under the Clearwater, Fla. sun, seemingly a continent away from the cold winter in Philadelphia.
Thus will begin the annual six-week ritual known as Spring Training. With it comes a series of questions that can only be answered on the diamond itself. Amid the signing of Thome and David Bell and the trade for Kevin Millwood, there is much optimism. Nonetheless, here is a sample of some of the nine questions facing the Phillies this season:
1. What is Jim Thome's adjustment factor?
2. How good are Vicente Padilla and Randy Wolf?
3. Will the real Brandon Duckworth please stand up?
