THE SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT TURF
The process of selecting the perfect turf for the Phillies New Ballpark has begun!
In November, Phillies executives, along with Ballpark project team members
and turf consultants, visited two turf farms in New Jersey: Tuckahoe Turf Farm
and Delea Sod Farm. The goal was to select sod plots on which to grow grass
for the Phillies New Ballpark's grass playing field. With recommendations from
turf consultants, the Phillies selected two turf farms that are renowned for
growing superior sod (natural grass) for many professional and collegiate sport
playing fields.
An important part of designing a top-notch playing field involves the development
of field specifications for the dirt surface and drainage system that would support
the new sod. The qualifications include specific requirements to be met by the
sod farm that ensure the harvested sod will fuse harmoniously with the soil
currently at the Ballpark project site.
"It's paramount to have the best possible playing surface for all players," said
David Montgomery, Phillies General Partner and President. "Our goal is to design
a state-of-the-art field with a superior turf and maintenance system that
allows for great baseball action."
Kentucky bluegrass is the type of grass chosen by the Phillies for the New
Ballpark. The sod placed on the playing field will be 100% bluegrass, consisting
of different seed varieties within the same family. This seed type is a regionalized
grass with the ability to recover well and the durability to survive cold weather.
Some time in the spring, the Phillies will review the progress of the plots and
select one farm to continue growing the sod that will actually be used for the
Ballpark's playing field.
INTERVIEW WITH JOHN STRANIX
John Stranix, project manager, leads the architctural and construction teams in the development of the New Ballpark.
A veteran of the design and construction industry, Stranix has over 21 years of experience in the
development of a wide array of world-class structures, including the $674 million expansion of
Chicago's McCormick Place and the $300 million MCI Center Arena in Washington, DC.
World-renowned artist Zenos Frudakis is well into the
process of creating the 10-foot tall bronze statues of Phillies
legends for the New Ballpark. Having already completed the
10" clay models, Frudakis is presently sculpting the 3' models
to resemble the 10' large-scale statues. With the main purpose
of seeing facial and other features firsthand, Frudakis often
invites the players and/or close family members to see the
progress directly and provide input. John Ashburn, Richie
Ashburn's son, met recently with Frudakis and was delighted
to see how the maquette of his father was evolving.
Frudakis is also creating statues of former Phillies greats
Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and Robin Roberts. Following the
creation of the 3' clay models, Frudakis will make a 10' model
of each player as well.
SEASON TICKETS IN THE NEW BALLPARK
HOW WILL PRIORITY BE DETERMINED AMONG SEASON TICKET HOLDERS?
The type of plan that a Season Ticket Holder has is the primary factor in
determining priority seating for the New Ballpark. Full Season Ticket Holders
will have the highest priority, followed by Partial Season Ticket Holders. Other
factors involved in the relocation process include tenure and the current
location of a Season Ticket Holder's plan. (Tenure represents the number of
continuous years that the account holder has maintained the account.)
