ARTIAGA HONORED
Sal Artiaga, the Phillies Director of Latin American Operations, was honored this past Monday night by Hipolito Mejia, President of the Dominican Republic, at the National Palace in Santo Domingo, DR. The Palace is the Dominican equivalent of the White House. Artiaga was recognized for his English and cultural assimilation program and for helping to acclimate Latin players in the Phillies minor league system into the United States.
Among those who attended the event were former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley, Tommy Lasorda, Expos GM Omar Minaya, Mariners GM Pat Gillick, Giants manager Felipe Alou, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and current players Alfonso Soriano, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Albert Pujols, Bartolo Colon and Miguel Tejada.

Former Phillie Tony Barron has returned to the organization as the hitting coach for single-A Lakewood. Barron, 36, has spent the past four seasons in the Mexican League. His last stint in the majors was in 1997 with the Phillies when he hit .286 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 57 games.
"Tony had a great work ethic when he played here," said Mike Arbuckle, Phillies Assistant GM for Scouting & Player Development. "We think he'll be a great fit in our development system."
