On the day the free agent market officially opened for all comers, Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ed Wade sprinted to the front of the order counter.
Infielder Tomas Perez has come out of the gates hitting in the Venezuelan Winter League. Perez is hitting .357 through his first seven games. Likewise, infielder Nick Punto has posted a .270 average in 26 games playing for Culiacan in the Puerto Rican League with five doubles and 12 RBI. Punto, who stole 42 bases for triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this past season, has six steals so far to go along with his .391 on-base percentage.
PHILLIES BALLPARK RED STEEL REACHES ITS HIGHEST POINT
The excitement of building a world-class Ballpark continues! The signature red-colored steel being installed in the scoreboard structure of the Phillies Ballpark has reached its highest point. Throughout 2002 and into 2003 red steel will continue to be installed in a counterclockwise direction around the site, where approximately 11,800 structural steel pieces will be erected for the construction of the Ballpark.
After celebrating a successful groundbreaking for the new Phillies Spring Training Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida on October 16, work at the site is progressing well. The existing structures on the site have been removed and construction is underway. The 7,000-seat ballpark, with a distinctive Floridian feel, will be built directly adjacent to the Carpenter Complex, near the intersection of US 19 and Drew Streets. With a 14-month construction schedule, the new ballpark will open in January, 2004, just a few months ahead of the Phillies New Ballpark.
