STEEL GOES VERTICAL
Structural Steel Raised High Above Street Level
The installation of structural steel at street level began in August at the Phillies New Ballpark project site. Beginning with the Ballpark's scoreboard structure (in the northwest quadrant) and moving in a counterclockwise direction around the project site, workers will install approximately 11,800 structural steel pieces for the construction of the Ballpark. Some of the largest pieces of steel will be used to create the signature scoreboard structure, with each piece weighing nearly 22,000 pounds and standing 65' tall.

"Over the next 20 months, fans will be amazed by how quickly the Ballpark takes shape. Before you know it, we will have a state-of-the-art Ballpark ready for our fans to explore and experience."
- David Montgomery
  Phillies General Partner and President

David Montgomery: Getting Updated from Construction Workers

David Montgomery makes routine visits to the project site to see the Ballpark's progress first hand. Oftentimes he chats with construction workers to get the latest update.

To see short video clips from Montgomery's walk through the Ballpark, go to the "Sights and Sounds" area of the New Ballpark section.

Masterpieces in the Making
Carlton and Frudakis review 10" clay model. Frudakis adds finishing touches to the Mike Schmidt clay bust.
The excitement of building 10-foot tall bronze statues of Phillies legends Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, and Richie Ashburn for the New Ballpark continues! This past August Mike Schmidt had his second sitting with Zenos Frudakis, the world-renowned artist commissioned by the Phillies to create larger-than-life statues, while Steve Carlton experienced his first meeting where he posed for both his clay bust and statue. As a part of the creative process, Frudakis meets with the players or close family members to ensure the statues represent each player as accurately as possible. Schmidt and Carlton will have several meetings with Frudakis with the unveiling of the large-scale bronze statues taking place prior to the opening of the Ballpark in 2004.

To see short video clips Frudakis sculpting Schmidt and Carlton, go to the "Sights and Sounds" area of the New Ballpark section.

Phillies New Ballpark Construction Workers Outing

More than 1,300 construction workers and their families enjoyed an afternoon of food, folks and fun at the Phillies New Ballpark Construction Workers Outing, hosted by the Phillies to celebrate the progress of the Ballpark. The festivities began with David Montgomery and his wife Lyn welcoming and thanking the workers for their hard work in building the Ballpark. Next, all were treated to a pre-game lunch where surprise appearances were made by Phillies Manager Larry Bowa, right-handed pitcher Brandon Duckworth, Phillies announcers Harry Kalas and Scott Graham, and the Phillie Phanatic. After lunch, everyone cheered the Phillies as they took on the Mets at a 1:15 game in Veterans Stadium.
