PHILLIES BALLPARK'S STEEL GOES VERTICAL: Structural Steel Raised High Above Street Level The installation of structural steel at street level began last week at the Phillies New Ballpark project site. Beginning with the Ballpark's scoreboard structure (in the northwest quadrant) and moving in a counter clockwise direction
around the project site, workers will install approximately 11,800 structural steel pieces for the construction of the Ballpark. Some of the largest pieces of steel to be installed will be used to create the signature scoreboard structure, with each piece weighing nearly 22,000 pounds and standing 65' tall. The average piece of steel is 42' long and will eventually be coated with three layers of paint: a primer, an intermediate layer, and a top layer of red paint. In all, there will be 11,602 gallons of paint applied to the steel -- complimenting the extraordinary visual of a breathtaking Phillies Ballpark clad in red steel, brick and stone.
