Good luck! I'd, for one, love to see an explosion of interest in WMA in the US.

WMAC ANNOUNCEMENT

It is my great honour and even greater pleasure to formally announce the launching of the Western Martial Arts Coalition!

The Western Martial Arts Coalition (WMAC) is a pan-American network of like-minded individuals dedicated to the advancement of the Western Martial Arts (also known as Historical European Martial Arts) through education, expansion, and exploration.

The WMA-Coalition is a "round-table" organization and as such has no hierarchal structure; each member's voice is considered on par with every other member.

Educated readers will notice a striking similarity between the WMA-Coalition's structure and that of the HEMAC (Historical European Martial Arts Coalition). This is not accidental. Witnessing the success of the HEMAC and its pivotal role in the explosive expansion of European Martial Arts all across Europe, the founders of the WMAC are dedicated to carrying out a similar explosion here in North America.

The members of the Coalition hail from a wide variety of backgrounds and have a wide variety of personal goals relating to these arts. They have come together freely and openly committed to working together in spite of their differences. To learn more about these goals please review the Western Martial Arts Coalition Constitution located at wmacoalition.com/constitution

The WMA-Coalition has plans for several unique online and offline programs which will be instigated via the Coalition's website and discussion forums. Some programs will be launched in accordance with this announcement and other programs are scheduled to roll out over the next several months. Please stay tuned for further announcements.

The Western Martial Arts Coalition will begin to host a variety of hands on events consisting of workshops, lectures, and presentations dedicated to these arts. In the coming weeks and months it will be our pleasure to announce the specifics surrounding our first annual Western Martial Arts Coalition Gathering. Please refer to the website for updates.

If you are interested in membership with the Western Martial Arts Coalition or know of someone who may be interested please contact the Coalition via the website or discussion forums. Additionally, all are encouraged to forward this notice to any and all points of related interest.

Lastly, please join me in wishing the WMAC a wonderful and successful journey!

Six members joined me at Gallowglass Academy on Saturday to work on Page's

Highland broadsword.

We used the video produced by Paul Wagner several years ago to walk through the

guards, attacks and defenses from Page's system.

Not sure our little "clan" is ready to take on the English regulars yet but we

will keep working toward that goal.

My wife and I went to Philadelphia last weekend for the SCA's Known World Academy of the Rapier. This is the 15th annual KWAR making it one of the longest running venues for presenting instruction on HEMA in the US.

I taught my classes on Silver's single sword and Swetnam's rapier and dagger.

While there I spent an evening working with Randal Gustitius, who teaches each year at the Ken Pfrenger's Cumann Bhata seminar.

Randal is really working on some interesting aspects of Russian martial arts and is also looking at using Thibault's use of distances and footwork to interpret Spanish knife fighting.

We are now meandering our way home stopping to do some historical tourism on the way.

Bob & Kristi Charron would like to invite you to the next event held at their
farm half an hour south of Madison, Wisconsin the second weekend in November.
(Nov 6th, 7th and 8th). We have decided to call the series of events "a la
villa" (at the country estate). Following several successful events, we have
received a great deal of positive feedback, and we have already received verbal
confirmations for this event from past attendees.

The advantage of having this property is that we can have a very small number of
guests and therefore provide better individual instruction and a more intimate
atmosphere. If four people sign up, then four it is! If we experience high
demand, we will run a second iteration of the event later in the year. This
event will have a maximum of 10 attendees.

Classes will be held in the incredibly spacious, newly renovated barn. The
classes will be held in our four-season, ten foot ceiling loft room that can
accommodate 10 individuals. The entire floor will be covered in wrestling mats
for your safety and comfort.

The only reservation is a paid reservation, and attendance is limited, so it's
first-come, first-serve. Please e-mail Bob at stmartinsacademy@... to
make your reservation or to ask any questions you may have about the event.

The seminar fee is $200 before October 9th and $225 afterward (we need to plan
for and buy food), and includes:
• All meals Friday evening through Sunday lunch (please provide dietary
restrictions if any)
• Lodging at the Charron's farm house
• 3 hours of lecture presentations
• 15 hours of hands on instruction with a small group (More individual
attention!)
• Time set aside for answering individual questions for all attendees

All activities will take place on the farm. Classes will begin with Friday
evening presentations, continue through an extended day on Saturday from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m., and conclude with instruction from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday. This
will leave time for traveling home without having to miss any of the
instruction, and provides all the late-night talking we can stand. Lectures
will provide much-needed rest in-between the hands-on sessions, and there will
be breaks for meals and play.

This particular seminar will focus on the wrestling and dagger sections of
Fiore's treatise with particular emphasis on integration and synthesis of
concepts into a real fight. We will be working toward application and
integration in a free-flowing environment.

Students should have some familiarity with close quarter combat systems. We
want to take this session to the next level.

Themes to be covered include:
• Safe entry into the fight
• Scientific progression of the fight according to Fiore
• Training sequences and chains
• Flow from one safe position to another
• Combat applications of these concepts

Lectures and demonstrations will include:
• First night preview and discussion of topics to be taught.
• Analysis and de-briefing on Fiore's system.

We suggest finding your best way to Madison, Wisconsin (we can pick you up at
the airport there). If you choose to go through Milwaukee or Chicago airports,
we suggest car rental (and car-pooling with other attendees) to arrive at the
farm. Driving directions and a map will be provided along with other
information in a packet provided to all attendees.

$55 for SSG members; $70 non-members

This year's annual SSG Symposium will include a whole batch of interesting
classes, opportunities for promotion testing, a chivalric roundtable, and a pas
d'armes tournament! This is a great time for SSG students to test for rank
advancement, but all are welcome, whether members of the Schola or not.

SCHEDULE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
--------------
The Ideal Training Partner - Frank Petrino, SSG East Coast Director
Friday Morning, 10:30 – 11:30 SIDE B
Frank has put together an outstanding program designed to help both partners
extract more from each moment of drill. This excellent class is designed for
students at all levels.

Applied Theory: Sword and Shield - Jason Willis, Little Rock Study Group Leader
Friday Morning, 10:30 – 11:30 SIDE A
Jason will teach a practical, in-armour class on sword and shield combat using
the basic SCA weapons form. Loaner armour will be available!

A "Practical" Guide to I.33 - Charles Brown, SSG Little Rock
Friday Morning, 11:45 – 12:45 SIDE A
One man's observations as to what has and hasn't worked when using I.33. Why is
vom Tag an underrated ward and why halbschwert (half-sword) really does work to
defend against all other wards. Class format will include both lecture and
drill, so bring a buckler!

"Let Slip the Tiger" - Charles Deily, SSG Boston Study Group Leader
Friday Morning, 11:45 – 12:45 SIDE B
See how you can increase the speed of your attacks and footwork, as well as
reduce the amount of time your opponent has to react to them, by understanding
visual perception and making a few small mechanical changes.

A Brief History of Medieval Arms & Armour - Brian R. Price, SSG Principale
(Friday Lunch – Pizza)
Friday lunch lecture, $10 (for food). Learn about the history of medieval arms
and armour through a slide presentation.

Applying SSG Fundamentals in Abrazare & Daga - Colin Hatcher, SSG Abrazare &
Daga Instructor
Friday Afternoon, 2:15pm – 4:30pm Side A
Core concepts such as the tre volte, use of the redoppiando and rebattendo are
fundamental principles. This course will demonstrate how these principles extend
into basic play in abrazare and daga.

Testing - Brian R. Price & Robert Holland

Friday Afternoon, 2:15 – 4:30pm Side B
Keith Augenthaler – 2:15 – 2:45 (Scolaro Minore)
Charles Brown, Jason Willis – 2:50 – 3:30 (Scolari Maggiore)
Frank Petrino – 3:35 – 4:15 (Primo Scolaro)

Dinner plans will take us to the Buffet followed by an evening Round Table at
Brian's house.

SATURDAY

"The Advantage is Great to One Who Knows it"- Charles Deily, SSG Boston Study
Group Leader
Saturday 10am – Noon – Side A
Fiore expands his Daga section by showing how to effectively wield the dagger
against the sword. We'll explore these plays, plus a few drawn from the 8th Daga
Remedy Master.

"Entering with the Lynx" - Charles Brown, SSG Little Rock
Saturday 10 am – 11am – Side B
Working from the most difficult of the quatro magistri dell'entrada, Charles
discusses how to harness the Lynx's potential to read the opponent and how to
use posta longa as an practical invitation. This is a "sword in hand" practical
class with some lecture.

Focus: Tor di Spada of Fiore dei Liberi - Rob Herstrom, SSG DFW Scolaro Maggiore
Saturday 11am – Noon Side B
This practical course will run through the five plays of the zogho stretto which
focus on disarming using "torques" of the sword. This turning tactic is central
to Fiore's theory of movement and practical in that the disarms are exceedingly
effective when done at speed.

Lunch 12 – 1:15 (TACO CABANA)

Intermediate/Advanced Distance and Measure in I.33 - Robert Holland, SSG Provost
Saturday Afternoon, 1:15 – 3:00 pm Side B
For those who are already familiar with the principles and wards in I.33, this
course will offer some advanced thoughts on the enigmatic problem of measure.

Poleaxe or Azza in Fiore dei Liberi - Bryan Johnson, Atlanta Study Group Leader
Saturday Afternoon 1:15 – 3:00 Side A
Bryan Johnson presents a short study in fighting with the poleaxe based on
principles within Fiore's system. Bryan's experience in and passion for armoured
combat will be brought to bear as he explains perhaps Fiore's most provocative
weapon.

Colin Hatcher Presents his Masterwork – The New SSG Daga Curriculum
Saturday 3:05 – 4:30 pm Side B

Poleaxe en Arme - Bryan Johnson, Atlanta Study Group Leader
Saturday Afternoon 4:30pm – 5:30pm Side A
This is Part II of Bryan's poleaxe class, where combatants who have armour can
get together and work through concepts of the poleaxe in their harness.

Advanced Sparring Drills - Brian R. Price, SSG Principale
Saturday, 5pm Side B
Learn how to create high-energy sparring drills designed to dramatically improve
integration and results on the tournament field!

DINNER - BBQ at Brian & Ann's house

Hi all,

Just a brief reminder of the upcoming events we're having at the Sala.

Sunday May 17th, 2009 - Open Sparring Day with the RMSG
This is a day for everyone to come out and *hopefully* interact with other groups in the Colorado area. Sparring with different weapon forms and against people you haven't worked with before can be a wonderfully educational experience. Additionally we can improve the interaction and friendship among local groups.

Saturday and Sunday June 16-17th, 2009 - A weekend with the Single Sword
The fourth in our seminar series for 2009, this will focus on the use and traditions of the spada solo, or single handed sword. Material will be covered from Fiore, the Bolognese school, George Silver and others to detail the systemic nature of the weapon as well as how to apply it into a combative situation. Registration is $90 for non-members, $65 for members, or $100 at the door. You can sign up via the paypal link on the event page - http://www.rockymountainswordplayguild.com/home/spada.htm

Both events are open to the public as well as members of the Rocky Mountain Swordplay Guild, and will be held at the RMSGs training facility-

10600 W 50th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thursday.

Thanks,
The Rocky Mountain Swordplay Guild

I found these really cool fencing shirts. I got 2 for my wife - who also fences
- and she loves them. Some of these have been done in other languages too.

This year we'll be learning how to compile all three major sword sections into a
single, coherant system following the strict rules that Fiore lays down for his
students. The event will finish with some Shinai work at speed. I look forward
to seeing you there!

FIORE A LA VILLA VI
JUNE 5th, 6th & 7th, 2009
SWORD IN ONE HAND, TWO HANDS OR ON HORSEBACK? ALL OF THEM AT ONCE, OF COURSE!

Bob & Kristi Charron would like to invite you to another event ever held at
their farm half an hour south of Madison, Wisconsin the first weekend in June.
(June 5th, 6th &7th). We are doing our best not to conflict with larger WMA
events during the season, and we have already received verbal confirmations from
attendees.

Classes will be held in the incredibly spacious, newly renovated barn which
includes:
• Space for 7 pairs of practitioners on the main floor with unlimited ceiling
space 
• Four-season, ten foot ceiling loft room that can accommodate 5 pairs
• Acres of practice and play area outside (and June is beautiful in Wisconsin)
• A gallery for guests to audit the classes or join their friends for the
weekend

The only reservation is a paid reservation, and attendance is limited, so it's
first-come, first-serve. Please e-mail Bob at stmartinsacademy@... about
attending.

The seminar fee is $200 before May 15th and $225 afterward (we need to plan for
and buy food), and includes:
• All meals Friday evening through Sunday lunch (please provide dietary
restrictions if any)
• Lodging at the Charron's (immense farm house with four available floors)
• 3 hours of lecture presentations
• 15 hours of hands on instruction with a small group (More individual
attention!)
• Time set aside for answering individual questions for all attendees

All activities will take place on the farm. Classes will begin with Friday
evening presentations, continue through an extended day on Saturday from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m., and conclude with instruction from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday. This
will leave time for traveling home without having to miss any of the
instruction, and provides all the late-night talking we can stand. Lectures
will provide much-needed rest in-between the hands-on sessions, as well as
breaks for meals and play.

This particular seminar will focus on how to integrate the sections on sword in
one hand, sword in two hands, and sword on horseback from Fiore's treatise into
a single and coherent system for fighting with the weapon. We will spend part
of the seminar on the various principles, and part of the seminar applying them
against one another in real time. Topics to be covered include:
• Blows, slices and thrusts
• Guards/Attacks and why they do not exist out of distance
• Using a single method to safely enter the two possible crossings
• Fighting from the crossing with the different fight paradigms generated by the
True and False edges
• Why these simple entries and paradigms lead organically and logically to all
the actions

All participants should bring a metal training sword for technique drill. They
should also bring a fencing mask, padded gloves (no metal gauntlets) and a
modified shinai for the real time actions and limited choice drills.

To make the modified shinai: Buy a shinai and slide the plastic and rubber tsuba
assembly off the end of the handle. Cut a piece of 1-1/2" heater hose long
enough for the cross (don't make this too large or long). Make a short cut
through both sides at the center of the hose just big enough to slip it over the
shinai's handle and slide it up to where the tsuba used to be (where the exposed
bamboo slats start). Tape the cross in line with the string that runs along the
blade using strapping tape. This is very easy to make, greatly reduces the
possibility of injury, and allows the use of controlled real time technique with
reasonably good results.

We suggest finding your best way to Madison, Wisconsin (we can pick you up at
the airport there). If you choose to go through Milwaukee or Chicago airports,
we suggest car rental (and car-pooling with other attendees) to arrive at the
farm. Driving directions and a map will be provided upon request.
