gordon, please forward this to the MMTC group. I am willing to join the yahoo
group blog
but am experiencing a problem with that site, currently.
I would like feedback from athletes (young and old) if they have a story to
share about a past
or current coach they have or had. A coach that made a positive difference in
their life and
which they are thankful. Why did this coach change their life for the better?
I hope to write
an article for the Lansing State Journal on the topic of
Coaches-that-make-a-difference.
If
anyone has an experiences they would like to share please send through e mail or

Oh, I remember so well the great Christmas Eve Day run hosted by the Miles.
Dick, I wish I could be there this year. "Not turning it into a workout" was
never a problem for me!

Please pass the following message on to all MMTC members. Thanks.
All:
Yes, it's that time of year again. Any and all interested runners and friends
are invited to the annual Christmas Eve Day Run through the Pinecrest
neighborhood of East Lansing starting at 2 p.m. from the Miles residence at 1990
Winchester Drive in East Lansing. That would be Wednesday, December 24.
Note that 2 p.m. is an hour later than the time in previous years. We are
accommodating some unfortunate souls who are working for at least a portion of
the day before Christmas.
The intent is for this to be a social run, not a race or even a workout. We
celebrate the holidays and the winter solstice with a 5K stroll on the course
for what used to be Ellens Race at a talkable pace, and then return to my
house for goodies, including Lindas famous hot cider and potato soup.
Nobody should even think about turning this into a race or even a legitimate
workout. At the very least, all the turns on this course are bound to slow you
down, especially if its icy!
We live in the northwest corner of East Lansing. From Saginaw Road, take
Harrison Road north almost to Lake Lansing. Turn left (west) on to Tarleton,
then left (south) on to Winchester Drive. Ours is the second house on the left.
Coming from Lake Lansing road, head south a short block on Harrison and turn
right on to Tarleton, then left on to Winchester. If none of this makes any
sense, M
apquest will show you exactly where we live. If you come by sleigh, there is no
extra charge to park on the roof.
All participants will be required to wave and pretend to say nice things to
neighbors who seem perplexed when it appears that a horde of crazed runners is
trying to take over their neighborhood.
This is an open invite, so please pass my message on to anyone whom I may have
missed in my list of recipients.
No need to RSVP. We take all comers. Questions or directions, call 332-2681.
Some of you may have gotten several copies of this. Thats because I use several
lists which have some overlap. Sorry about that.
Hope to see you on December 24.

Interested in your preferences for next years 25K date. For years it has been
on the first Saturday of December. Below is some past results and note that
the weather is frequently messy at that time of year.
Should we:
1. Keep tradition.Stay same 1st Saturday of Dec
2. Sat after Thanksgiving
3. Sat before Thanksgiving
Here are some past years

Dec 06, 2003
33 degrees, no snow, no wind, occasional sun
new course layed out by McMahon, all on Riverwalk with no repeats.
30 runners, 18 went 25K
Overwhelming majority of 25K runners liked and preferred the new course layout
Grant Woodman ran in front by himself ticking off 5:36 miles
25K
32nd annual
Dec 03 2005 Rivertrails
Cold, 21°, very icey and slippery
Note: afterward several hours were spend wheeling the co urse because our
calculations and two geo calculators said the course was .4 of a mile too
long. It was! At the Moore’s River turnaround it was .1 of a mile too
long. That extra was run 4 times. Results are with corrected distances. In
the case of the full 25K the times are recalculated to 25K, two fast times Grant
Woodman and Donavan Hornbeck who started about38 minutes late..

the 25K. Carl Willits, coach at Perry HS, is getting his
charges out doing longer runs - lookout for payoff in
good results next year.

For better or worse....we will try to run the 25K (15 plus miler) for the 34th
year. Hopefully the wether underfoot will be somewhat reasonable.? In the past
we have run out of Potter Park to Jolly at Hagadorn and back, we have used
varying layouts of the River Trail, and run the country roads of Holt.? This
year we will do a new course starting at Hawk Island.? This allows easy parking,
warming area if necessary, restrooms, and a course other than just roads.?
Course will be around Haawk Island pond, into woods, 70yds or so on Aurelius,
thru Mt Hope cemetery, and return The loop will be 5 miles even for those that
wish to run shorter.? Perusual gather time at 9:00, start line at 9:15.? Start
line at restroom-shelter area on ne side of pond.? Park that corner too.?? You
may want to leave any water bottles Mt Hope entrance for mid route water stop.

Still going to try to do intervals despite the weather.? Will do 4 of 3/4mi
repeats with a minute rest in between.? Even with the cold and incomplete
recovery, one should be able to handle the workout at sub-10K pace.? For the
first time we will use the new Rivertrail extension from the entrance of Mt Hope
Cemetery toward ?Hawk Island.? In this weather it should be rather
picturesque....and probably some slippery spots, but where other than Jenison
Field House are there no slippery spots.? Gather 9:00, start 9:15.? Park single
file with wheels on the pavement in the cemetery.? Start line just a few yards
from Mt Hope Rd sidewalk.

3 miles – scramble-three ½ mile loops in each direction
Grovenberg Rd. Park
Nov 08, 2008 cold, windy, temp 42
We have not used this course in over 10 years. It is rather picturesque and
fun to run it. It used to be an MMTC staple on the Tuesday following Labor
Day. Perhaps we will resurrect it on next summer’s schedule.
