Summer schedule is made. Start 2nd Tues in april. Note, start times
llisted as 6:15. That is when the "gun" will go off. Note a few new venues.
A
reminder that in May we must keep out of the cemetaries and high school tracks
are not available in football season and track season; therefore our
activities are bunced as to parks, cemeteries, high school tracks.
Also, your first schedule will be sent by a copy=paste mode. A multiple
mailing with an attachment will be made a little later as AOL etc. permit.

Mid-Michigan Track Club
Summer 2006
     * time trials (not a race); no awards, no entry fees, but all start
together and are timed
     * summer goals are to peak for 5k and 10k racing by weekly interval
sessions
SOME NOTES REGARDING: MT HOPE and EVERGREEN CEMETERIES - It is a privilege
to run there with hills and no traffic.
However, the city father’s blessings are rather fragile, therefore it
behooves us to closely follow these rules:
1. If auto traffic . . . quietly and politely yield, especially
congregating at start/finish line
2. If someone visiting a grave site . . . pass by quietly
3. If a funeral . . . we go to other cemetery . . . last resort
Potter Park
4. Cemetery Parking: single file on south side of road in the SW corner
where we are the most out of sight
5. While running, if route puts runners facing each other, keep to the right
(like when driving a car)
SOME NOTES REGARDING TRACK WORKOUTS
1. Run tight to inside curb, even slower runners so that all passing will be
on the outside.
2. Run single file, when pacing together side by side, go single file on
curves and when being passed.
3. Step off track or to very outside lane when not running.
4. During relays run in the inside 2 lanes, awaiting partners line up in
lanes 3,4,5, & start when partner crosses line
(It is not necessary to touch)

You can tell it is late winter and not spring yet! We meet Saturday at the
rivertrail at thefish ladder near Grand River Av. The river is up, perhaps
flooding the riverwalk, like springtime. Also, the temp is predicated to be
14 degrees over Fri night like winter time. Jim Carter will be bringing
clock and deciding on the route. Bill Keller will probably come in sweats
instead of shorts if the 14 degree prediction holds....maybe.

I had a sign in my office that became my motto. It said, "what Mother
Nature giveth, Father Time taketh away" Old cougers llike Wilbert Griffin,
Norm
Eastman, and myself can testify to that. For a runner, no matter how hard
he/she trains, the age factor enters into a destinied slowdown as predictable
as life's mortality itself.

The mission is to maximize yourself at each new age level. Maybe you are
not as fast, but you are just as good. (That could be a motto of life, too)
Each season you should discard the old personal bests records as memories, and
shoot for a new personal best for the current year. I have been rummaging
around thru some old papers and found a table of 5K and 10K computer models
based on age group records that allows a runner to compare the time of past
years and current and future ages to a per cent level of nearing the than
current
age group record. Thus, if the tables predict that your time this year will
be 3 minutes slower than last year, you can achieve a new personal best even
if the stopwatch is slower. It is too complicated to copy onto Email, but I
will get them copied off for anyone interested.

Am headed south for a few weeks, when I return i will invite orders for
those tables to anyone interested. Would be a handy tool as you prepare for
the
interval training season and the competitive races this spring and summer.

Dear MSU Track and Field Fans,
The Michigan State Track and Field team has the honor of hosting the 2006
Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championship. This meet will be held at the
Ralph Young Track, next to Spartan Stadium, from Friday, May 12 through Sunday,
May 14. This meet represents an opportunity for the Michigan State Track and
Field Team to host one of most competitive collegiate conference meets in the
country while allowing its athletes to perform in front of a home crowd.
In order to ensure a quality meet experience for participants and fans, we
are in need of enthusiastic volunteers from the community. Each volunteer
would sign up for specific time slots over the three day period. It is possible
to sign up for as many or few slots as desired by each volunteer. Volunteers
will receive a complimentary pass to take in all of the weekend’s events,
free
meals while working the event, and an MSU Track and Field T-Shirt. If you
are interested in volunteering for one or more of the time slots please view
the attached document and email me the following information. Please volunteer
for events that you fully anticipate working.
***Your first and last name

***Phone number
***Day(s) you wish to volunteer
***Specific time period you are volunteering for (see attached sheet)

Recvd this letter from Jim Carter:

Gordy,
This is our opportunity to receive MSU's permission to occasionally use the
MSU Track.
Suggest that we talk to Andy Marsh (he works at Playmakers) to explain our
case. I'm sure that MSU would be grateful for any support that MMTC can offer,
and that MMTC would be able to help with volunteers anytime MSU needs help.
This would open some good repoire between MSU & MMTC that has been lacking
for several years. I believe that this would be a win-win opportunity for both
MSU & MMTC.
Jim Carter

Where: Hawk Island County Park
Time: 7:00 - 10:00pm.
We're inviting users of the trail systems to join us for a candlelit walk or
run around the lake at Hawk Island. We'll have music and light refreshments
for everyone.
This is your chance to let people know what's happening in your neck of the
woods with the trail system. It's also an opportunity for people to find out
how to help with the Heart Of Michigan trail project.
Members of Team Playmakers walking and running group (almost 400 people)
have been invited, and watch the LSJ sports section on Tuesday April 18th for
my
article about the event.
Email me at _Karen.smith@..._ (mailto:Karen.smith@...) with any
questions, or if you'd like to help.
Hope to see many of you there - this will be a great community event.

From a 1974 newsletter
MMTC in the past held a summer ending pentathalon whereby computerized
points were assigned for each distances finish time. For instance a 12.0 100yd
and
a 60 sec 440yd and a 5:00 mile might all receive 1000pts per event. The
event required plenty of extra help to record and calculate. In 1974 the
champ
was Gerald Crane with the following chart: 220yd 25.2, 440yd 54.5, 880yd
2:04.5, mile 4:39.5, 3-mile 14:49. PRETTY GOOD NIGHT’S WORK!

Self Timed
6 x 880 on the 3:30’s or 4:00’s or 5:00’s
Alliance Road 1 mile loop near Campus
April 18, 2006 warm, 66ºstrong se wind
This type of interval workout does not qualify for timing of total distance
or even splits. Certainly a runner could not do 6 x 880yds solo as well as
when they can run with peer groups for speed and effort stimuli. With the
apparent efforts and relative running times, the multi-person peer group
intervals were a success at early speed training.
The course was selected because of room to have the groups run separately,
to not have people running head on to each other, and to be away from bikers,
rollerbladers, walkers, and joggers as we encountered when doing this
exercise on the Riverwalk. What do you participants think of the venue?

of Memorial Day, give them automobile room and quietness as you pass their
vicinity.
