Shalane's father is Steve Flanagan, who in addition to being a good distance
runner himself, was also the? manager of the Frank Shorter Running Shop in East
Lansing during the late 70's.

Shalane's mother is Cheryl Bridges Flanagan Treworgy...who has been
among other things the WR holder in the Marathon, athletic director at
MSU and now is a photographer with a website similar to RunMichigan. I
don't have information about Shalane's father, Cheryl's previous
husband, but I have heard he was also a very good runner in his day.
Having tried to catch up with Cheryl while we both photographed cross
country meets I can say Cheryl still is a pretty good runner. Shalane
herself was NCAA CC Champ @ UNC and 3rd place medalist in the 2004 US
Olympic 5000m Trials. I have some great shots of her falling into
Cheryl's arms as Cheryl looks at the scoreboard at the 2004 Trials to
see what Shalane placed.
