When JP Boylan lived in Michigan he was a member of the Extang (now
Ford/Giant) Cat 1/2 road team. A couple of years ago JP finished
second in the big Tour di Via Italia race on Erie Street in Windsor.
This was the best performance in the Erie Street race by an amateur
Michigan based rider in many years. JP grew up in Dearborn and
graduated from University of Michigan with a BS in Mechanical
Engineering and a MS in Biomedical Engineering (concentration in
Biomechanics).
I received the following interesting email from JP recently;
Mike,
I'm making custom bikes, cyclocross included, in Boulder, CO and
would love to get some business from Michigan riders. I am currently
working with Columbus steel and Easton aluminum and will add titanium
within a month. I am only doing custom frames so I don't have any
stock or stocked frames right now, although my turnaround is rather
quick for a custom builder. Approx 3 weeks, at present, from receipt
of deposit to delivery.
I will have bikes being ridden in the area by Dave Meyers and Jim
Levinsohn within a couple of weeks if anyone is interested in
inspecting the quality and finish. All my frames are painted by
Spectrum Powder Works (www.spectrumpowderworks.com) who do a first
rate job. I have been impressed with every bike I've gotten from
them.
Please direct people to my website, under development, for pricing
and contact info (www.jamesframes.com). I think you will be very
pleasantly surprised with the pricing.
I offer complete bikes as well as frame only. I'm willing to try
anything if anyone has any special project bike ideas (i.e.. disc
brake cross, singlespeed with eccentric BB, 29" mtn/cross bike) Let
your imagination run wild. Lead times will increase with the level of
imagination.
Thanks Mike,
JP Boylan

The 2002 cyclocross season has started and cyclocross is bigger than
ever in Michigan with 12 races and 2 different race series. However
as usual cyclocross bike availability is low. I have checked with a
few of the bike shops I visit regularly and this a summary of what I
have found out;
Bikesport in Dearborn has an allocation of 3 Bianchi "Axis"
cyclocross bikes available, 2 size 52's and 1 size 55. These are 2003
bikes with aluminum frames and carbon forks. Carbon forks have become
very popular on aluminum cross bikes because they really improve the
ride quality. These bikes are on sale this week for $1249 (regular
price is $1300), which is about the best price you are going to find
for a complete cyclocross bike with a carbon fork.
For anyone looking for a custom build Bikesport has the ability to
obtain Colnago, Orbea, and Bianchi frames very quickly. The Colnago
and Orbea frames are made of Columbus aluminum while the Bianchi
frame is scandium with curved seat stays and a carbon fork.
Continental Bike Shop in Hazel Park has 2003 Cannondale "HeadShok
equipped" cyclocross bikes in sizes 50, 52, 54, and 56. They also
have a 2002 Cannondale in size 50. These bikes have aluminum frames
and the HeadShok makes this a great bike for riding the dirt roads in
areas like North Oakland County. For 2003 Cannondale has reduced the
price on these bikes to $1299 (the 2002 price was $1764).
Continental also has 2 Kona "Jake the Snake" aluminum cyclocross
bikes in sizes 52 and 56. These bikes come complete with Shimano 105
components for $1050. Dave Gaskell reports that Kona has good
availability on these bikes so if Continental doesn't have your size
they can get you one of these Kona's in your size very quickly.
If you prefer steel Continental also has a Gunnar "Crosshairs" frame
in size 52 for $800 and a Surley "Cross-Check" frame in size 42 for
$425.
International Bike Shop in Garden City reports that they have a
Redline "Conquest" in size 55 available for $779, probably the best
price you will find on a complete aluminum cyclocross bike. If you
need another size Rob Akers says that Redline is well stocked and
International can get you any size you need really fast.
The WaHu! Bicycle Company in Rochester has changed its name to the
Rochester Bike Shop. They have 2 aluminum cyclocross bikes in stock.
One is a Shimano Sora equipped blue Trek "XO-1" in size 55 which is
on sale for $700. The other is a Shimano Tiagra equipped
Specialized "CX Comp" in size 56 which is on sale for $800.
I have seen all of these bike models and the one thing I can say is
that they all come with excellent race ready frames. I have seen
almost all of these frames used at national and international level
cross races.

Michael R.

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday September 18th, there will be informal
cyclocross training sessions at the Helms Haven area of Hines Park
every Wednesday at 6PM until daylight savings time ends in October.
The Helms Haven area of Hines Park is located on the south side of
Hines Drive just west of Outer Drive in Dearborn Heights.
The final event of the season will take place at The Velodrome at
Bloomer Park this coming Saturday, September 7th @ 4PM. The NAS-TRACK
Madison Racing League teams will be racing once again in the NAS-
TRACK SOUPer Bowl.
For those of you who don't know NAS-TRACK is the new and exciting
race format designed with the spectator in mind. With as many as 8 or
9 two-rider teams racing on the cozy 200 meter Velodrome at Bloomer
Park the action is non-stop and right in front of you.
At the NAS-TRACK League Championships one month ago over 700 fans
showed up at The Velodrome at Bloomer Park to watch the team of
Frankie Andreu and Dave Koesel take that title from seven other
teams. Now comes the final event of the NAS-TRACK season, the NAS-
TRACK SOUPer BOWL, and the teams will be changed around just to make
things interesting. If you haven't been out to see the NAS-TRACK
action then you must come out to The Velodrome at Bloomer Park this
Saturday afternoon at 4PM or you will have to wait until 2003.
Seating at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park is on our newly expanded
multi tiered hill so you might want to bring a folding chair or
blanket with you when you come out. We also have a number of seat
cushions that are available to use for free on a first come/first
serve basis.
The Michigan CAT Summer Track Point Series Finals will take place this Saturday,
August 31st @ 3PM at The Velodrome at Bloomer Park. This will be the second to
last race date at the velodrome this year. Your attendance is requested.
Admission is free.
Category A, B, and C racers have been racing all summer and earning points
towards the Michigan CAT Summer Track Point Series Championships. In Saturday's
finale increased point values will be on the line as each category will race in
the three classic track events, the Miss & Out, the Scratch Race, and the Points
Race. In addition to these 9 races there will be additional races for Women and
Juniors and quite possibly some special events at the end of the day. Entry Fee
for the day is $10.00 per rider except Juniors who race for FREE.
After nine weeks of racing Rippin Ronnie, James Woods, and Christopher Hughes
lead the A, B, and C point series categories respectively. However with a
maximum of 30 points on the line Saturday none of these riders have a secure
lead. There are still at least 3 or 4 riders in each category who could win the
Michigan CAT Summer Track Point Series Championships if they have a good day on
Saturday. This should make for some very exciting racing this Saturday so grab
your folding chair, stock your cooler, and come on out to The Velodrome at
Bloomer Park at 3PM and watch the most exciting bike racing in Michigan.

Velodrome at Bloomer Park. There will be an increased prize list for the finals
and rumor has it that a former National Madison Champion and Tour de France
rider from Dearborn will be racing for one of the teams. I wonder who that could
be? This will also be the last Friday night racing event of the year at the
velodrome. Racing starts at 7PM.
For those of you who don't know NAS-TRACK is the new and exciting race format
designed with the spectator in mind. With as many as 8 or 9 two-rider teams
racing on the cozy 200 meter Velodrome at Bloomer Park the action is non-stop
and right in front of you.
The teams have been racing every Friday night for the last 5 weeks just to
qualify for this Friday nights NAS-TRACK Finals. During that time the word has
been spreading about how exciting NAS-TRACK racing is. Last Friday night we had
around 400 spectators come out see the show. If you haven't been out to see the
NAS-TRACK action then you must come out to The Velodrome at Bloomer Park this
Friday night at 7PM or you will have to wait until 2003.
Seating at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park is on our newly expanded multi tiered
hill so you might want to bring a folding chair or blanket with you when you
come out. We also have a number of seat cushions that are available to use for
free on a first come/first serve basis.
