2002 Glacier Gorge Event Cancelled
The 2002 Glacier Gorge at Otsego Club mountain bike race, originally slated
for September 28th and 29th, has been cancelled.
Race organizer, Steve Brown, said that the Glacier Gorge race simply
stretched his resources too far to be able to continue with the event.
“Every year the Subaru Iceman demands more of my time and attention to the
point of not being able to organize another event during the fall. Last year
the Iceman reached its limit of 2,000 riders and was closed to new entries
the week of the Glacier Gorge. It was just nuts in the office packing
supplies for Glacier Gorge, answering Glacier Gorge questions, and dealing
with 200 Iceman entries and inquiries a day at the same time. Something had
to give and, unfortunately, it was the Glacier Gorge.”
Otsego Club and Resort will continue their plans to develop new mountain
bike trails on its property. Paul Johnston, Otsego’s Operations Manager,
said, “We’ve enjoyed hosting the Glacier Gorge and hoped that it could
continue but understand Steve’s decision. Regardless, our guests are active
folks who enjoy all kinds of recreational activities and mountain bike
riding is a big part of that lifestyle. We have sold some of the property
that the Glacier Gorge course has utilized in the past. However, we still
have over 1,000 acres of some of the most breathtaking country in Northern
Michigan. I know we can develop new trails that will offer challenges for
every level of rider. In fact, Steve will be up here in the spring to lay
out some of our new trails.”
Robert Linden of Tailwind Enterprises is currently in the conceptualization
stages of creating a new mountain bike event in Aspen Park in Gaylord, MI to
replace the Glacier Gorge on the Michigan Mountain Bike Association
calendar. For more information about Tailwind’s plans for September 29,
