WWE Smackdown house show report
Saturday, September 19, 2004
Memphis, Tenn. at FedEx Forum
Report by D.M., PWTorch.com correspondent
Hey, I just came back from the Smackdown house show at the brand new
FedEx Forum. By the way, Fed Ex Forum has to be one of the nicest
arenas around. So if any of you readers are ever in Memphis check it
out. As for the show, it was just okay. I have to give the WWE credit
for not having any no shows with the exception of John Cena. The show
started off REAL slow, but it picked up after a while. Well, let's
talk about the attendance. Now I have been to recent shows in the
past year where the top deck was closed off, but this time they cut
the arena in half by putting a huge black curtain dead center of the
20,000 seat arena. I was quite surprised to see that. There were
between 3,000-4,000 there I'd estimate. Here are the results.
(1) Rico & Charlie Haas (w/ Miss. Jackie) defeated The Dudley Boyz
after Rico superkicked Bubba after distraction from Miss. Jackie. It
was kind of a slow opener but there was some good humor in it
involving Rico and Bubba.
(2) Hendenrich defeated Hardcore Holly with a weakly executed
sidewalk slam. Well I don't think I need to waste my time talking
about Henderich needing more work.
Billy Kidman came out in street clothes to do a promo. He basically
was talking about the last couple weeks and questioned the fans and
Paul London for turning on him. Paul London came out and demanded
they solve their problem tonight. Theodore Long came out and ordered
them to have a match..
(3) Paul London defeated Billy Kidman by countout. This was the
biggest disappointment of the night. After a minute in the match
Kidman goes on the top turnbuckle and acts like he is going for the
Shooting Star but he jumps off the ring and heads to the back..
Okay?
(4) Carlito defeated Scotty Too Hotty with a roll up with feet on the
ropes. Carlito has a cool character and I hope he gets over with the
crowd once becomes more known. The big hair should help him to.
(5) Renee Dupree & Kenzo Suzski defeated The FBI after Dupree hit
Nunzio with his finisher slam. Not a bad match but nothing notable
except Kenzo and Renee doing the French Tickler together after the
match..
(6) The Undertaker defeated JBL (w/ Orlando Jordon) by DQ after JBL
hit the Undertaker with the belt. This match was way better than I
expected it to be. It was a real solid 15 minute match with some good
storytelling and crowd interaction. Also I was surprised that JBL
came out in his Bullhorn limo at a house show.
Torrie Wilson and Dawn Marie came out to shoot t-shirts in the crowd.
10 minute intermission.
(7) Spike Dudley (w/ the Dudleys) defeated Rey Mysterio after Bubba
attacked Mysterio. After the match Charlie Haas and Rico came out to
save Rey Mysterio from a beating.
Jerry Lawler came out infront of his hometown crowd to a good pop.
Now I am not that knowledgable when it comes to Memphis wrestling
history but that was basically what this segment was about. Some old
timer named Steve Keirn and a middle aged black guy (who resembled
the Coach) were involved in this segment. The segment ended when
Keirn and the black guy attacked Lawler. Lawler ran away and was
screaming on the microphone how he was just embarassed infront of his
home crowd.
(8) Rob Van Dam defeated Booker T in a non-title match with the 5
Star Splash. Solid match..
(9) Eddie Guerrero & Big Show defeated Kurt Angle & Luther Reigns
after Eddie Guerrero hit the Frog Splash on Reigns off of Big Show's
shoulders. This match originally started as Eddie Guerrero vs Luther
Reigns (which GREATLY disappointed me!) but luckily Kurt Angle and
Big Show came out to interfere which prompted Theodore Long to come
out and make it a tag match. Like JBL, I was surprised to see Eddie
drive out in a low rider truck.
