Good afternoon All!

With half time upon us and the Redskins up,  thought I would take the opportunity to share the attached.

Howard Pardee scanned three Marlboro programs from his archives and shared them with us. Here is the first covering the 1965 Governor's Cup.  As my computer skills catch up, I will post the other two.

Howard is a long time member of the SAAC (Shelby American Automobile Club) and owns an original GT350R. Here is the story of that car in Howard's words:

"I bought this factory race GT350 in 1983 and have had it a numerous events throughout the years. The owner/driver of the car at Marlboro was Ben Warren, Jr. and his usual co-driver was John Scott. Marlboro was the very first race that the car was in after it was received from Shelby American in '65. After Marlboro it ran at Virginia International Raceway, BA, Courtland, AL, Nassau Speed Weeks in the Bahamas and was entered as a reserve at Sebring, FL. The owner became ill in early 1966 and never raced it again. It was sold by his widow in 1969 and raced in the upper Midwest by Gerald Mulnix and Douglas Tipple during the 1970 and 1971 season before being retired to the street."

The car competed under number 7 at Marlboro; Howard is always interested in any information about the car.

Finally in one of those small world stories, Howard and I served in the USCG in Connecticut in the early 70's. Although we didn't know each other, I do remember his GT350 parked on the reservation.

Take care,

Mike Matune

If you get a message from Robert Hines with no subject, I'd purge it without reading.

Rick Mandelson told me of Bob's passing, and I opened the enclosure expecting some message from his family. Instead, his account is apparently hacked and you'll get a spam message.

I'm running my virus software as we speak.

Cheers and Happy New Year, Bob Storck

Terry,

Thanks for the info, I am sure Howard will appreciate it.

Attached is a picture of Howard's car I took at the 2006 SAAC Convention at VIR. Thought it was interesting to compare the two photos.

Take care,

Terry,

Thank you very much for sending the photo. I know that you used it in your excellent book about the Bahamas Speedweeks. At Nassau it ran meatball number 17 and at Marlboro it ran number 7.

Mike,

I've already contacted Terry and thanked him for sending the photo. As you know, he is the author of a book on the Bahamas Speedweeks. 5R095 ran in three races there in 1965 and the photo he sent was one from his book.

Thank you very much for posting the program scans. I hope they weren't too much work for you.

Someone from the Atlanta Region raced a 350 Shelby in a 1967 regional at Vidalia, Ga on the city airport which was a WW II training base. Ed Rahal had his D-Jag there for what would be its final outing. In neither the Saturday 5-lapped nor the Sunday 15-lap feature were those two cars over about 100 feet apart. Great races. The Shelby won both but the feature only because he wound that 289 up to 7500 to get past the D late in the race.

Funny you should ask because it is almost always on the tip of my tongue but only once a year or so can I remember. I'll check with the AR to see if any oldtimer knows. A friend who just retired from the GE plant where I work raced a Sprite back then. I''ll email him. I remembered my friend from "back in the day" and hope he might remember the 350GT driver. Dick something or another. Might have been Dick Ott, come to think of it but I'll check.

Good morning all,

Howard Pardee shared this with me concerning the reopening of Thompson Speedway's road course in Connecticut. Like all of you, I have heard similar stories about Marlboro over the years. I guess this proves "Never Say Never"!

Take care,

Mike Matue

Thank you for all of your positive comments and support toward the

re-paving and re-opening of the historic road course here at Thompson. We

were planning on putting out a more formal press release next week with the

accompanying image after we release our 2013 racing schedule and rules. The

info that is being passed around is in fact true and did come from us. It was

distributed to all the clubs, groups and schools that have worked with us to

develop this plan and go through feasibility over the past two years. To

clear up a couple things in the comments below. The venue, when used as a

road course, will be primarily for club events, i.e., PCA, BMW, SCCA, etc,

high performance driving schools, corporate outings, testing, etc. Our

primary goal is to re-pave the historic course, upgrade degraded asphalt,

safety barriers and overall facilities and amenities. When there are oval

racing events the track will transform back to the traditional oval

configuration. Parking will take place the same as it does now during oval

events. Again, we will be releasing more on the facility upgrades and

r-paving project over the next couple weeks. Any questions or concerns please

message the facebook page and we will contact you personally.”

Locals never related to the sports car crowd -- not enough money to effect local economy -- remember few hotels/no good restaurants closeby - OBI was a local eye sore allowerd for the local drunks to hang out on the far side of town - noise and comotion was HATED by the locals - Marlborians were snooty, insular and pretentious - the local rich related to their assumed historic connection to English landed gentry - riding to the foxes, duck and goose hunting <pennicle of old Marlboro society is the Marlbourgh Hunt Club -right- [and yes, I am an inverse snob I'm soon to be 66 - I can now say these things]> they truly hated the oval track/demo derby crowd -I didn't relate to them either- and words are not adequate to describe how they felt when the annual American Motorcycle Association National Meeting that took place in August at Marlboro - right out of Marlon Brando/Hells Angels come to Marlboro<hide the women and children> - when the last owner -- a racer defaulted on loans and taxes and the track was sold to some Persians/Iranians on the Prince George's County Courthouse steps in Marlboro 1970 it was CLEARLY understooid the place would never again operate in any capacity as a racetrack historic or otherwise - My folks moved to Marlboro to an acerage developemnt in 1959 created when a local old family farmer went bankrupt we in that community were never fully accepted in the community - I was 12 it was hard there AND I liked sports cars and the track which made me more peculiar to the locals

were planning on putting out a more formal press release next week with the

accompanying image after we release our 2013 racing schedule and rules. The

info that is being passed around is in fact true and did come from us. It was

distributed to all the clubs, groups and schools that have worked with us to

develop this plan and go through feasibility over the past two years. To

clear up a couple things in the comments below.

Guys, I wish you had the franchise on NIMBYness but down here in the sunny South, hospitality is much like a small child seeing a playmate with a toy He, himself, hasn't wanted to play with until then. The citizens of Jackson County, AL who live just past the end of the Crow Mountain hillclimb course could turn east and take the mostly straight route to town that one weekend but, no, they would rather tell the county commission that they are not being permitted to use the twisty, hilly roads and get the county to revoke the SCCA Central Carolinas Region permit.

Unfortunately. I have to agree that Marlboro is e morto and a memory.  There will not be any financial backer to bankroll such a small track.  The trend is toward the types of tracks that Segal has opened with New Jersey Motorsport Park and what he has done in revamping VIR.

Unfortunately, it looks like Summit Point is heading toward the memory zone.  My detailer, who is a bike racer or knee dragger told me a few months ago that his racing organization has pulled out of the Point and gone to NJMP because of the Point's pavement conditions.  Look at their schedule.  They have no more major events there.  There is nothing to attract an audience or produce income there.

We all have our fond memories of Marlboro and other old tracks that have faded.  But, the sport is moving on and the demands for better, safer and more spectator attractive tracks are commanding a different direction.

Let's enjoy the memories but appreciate the future.

I would not worry to much about Summit Point -- many "Departments" rely on the Point: Defense, Justice, Homeland Security, & Virginia State and County Police plus "Private" Contractors with friends in the local govt. - it would be "suggested" to encroaching home developments/home owners; its best to ignore whatever is happening at the "Point" Do not stare at the black helicopters

and, DC Region of the SCCA has no where else to go - and, we don't care - pavement and facilities way better than twenty years ago -yes!-

IMHO, the noise was a minimal part of the discontent. Too few residents within earshot, and the surrounding pines were a great sound barrier. It was the image of car racing. Greasy and grimy vs other sports.

What was a hassle was the many who would park up and down US301, rather than pay the fees in the totally inadequate lot. And local police never provided traffic control, as they do for churches (not paid or refused?) Then there were the crowds of locals who'd watch for free along the hiqhway overlooking to boot.

My ex's grandmother worked for the county, and passed on how they were bothered that car races didn't get coverage except by Ev Gardner, while Laurel, Acquasco, Bowie and other horse tracks were on the front page of the papers and splashed all over TV! We told her how hard SCCA tried, but it was the media bias.

Thanks to all of you for presenting a history of the problems with Marlboro.

I brought up the subject of Thompson Speedway opening up their road race course. I should have pointed out that Thompson International Speedway has had their 5/8 mile oval open since 1940 and they have run races there since then - except probably for during WW II. The road race course was opened in 1950, making it the first permanent road course in the U. S., and was closed in 1978. In 1952 it was a 1.5 mile course including the oval. It then was converted to a 2.0 mile track without the oval and then the configuration was changed to 1.7 miles.

If anyone would like to read more about the history of Thompson, there are a number of sites on the internet that should give you a good background. By the way, Thompson International Speedway is in Thompson, Connecticut. There is a Thompson Raceway Park drag strip which is in Ohio.

Mike and everyone -- I passed Marlboro every work day for the last two years and eight months <retireed a week ago today> the Marlboro Raceway will never open in any capacity related to racing or the history that took place there -- the foot print and stands are mostly still there - but so to is the animiss of the locals against the track - Al Turner, the counties largest developer and New York real estate developer and vintage sports car racer Harvey Siegel could not re-open Marlboro -- VERY dead issue

When I attended my first race at Marlboro, we had to park on U.S.301 because the lot was completely full. And the property next door to the track was also full. I seem to remember that originally, that land owner started with a simple wood frame house but by the end of racing at Marlboro, he had (apparently) made enough money off of charging for parking, to build a new brick house. Of course the money could have come from other sources. But he did make money from letting people park on his property.

You're right about lack of media coverage. With the exception of Ev Gardner's column there was virtualy no coverage of sports car racing in the DC/Metro area. The only source of coverage came from Competition Press but they didn't usually carry information about Regional races. When I was racing, the first thing I would do after a race was write a press release and/or race result release and give it to the sports editor of the Frederick News-Post. They always printed them. I figured that maybe I could get some sponsorship if people were aware that I was out there.  I remember asking the editor why they didn't cover motorsports and he said that honestly, he (and none of his staff) had any real knowledge of motorsports. This led to me writing a weekly column called "Spotlight on Speed" that ran for a number of years in that paper.

    Cheers, Bob

Thanks Howard, I attended my first driver's school at Thompson. I remember getting the car ready on Friday all day, working until midnight and then driving the Sting Ray to Thompson. I had race tires stuffed in the ca. I arrived just in time for registration. It was a one day school and I drove straight home that night, getting in around 3:00 AM on Sunday.
