Sorry to bomb the list, but Jack Woehrle (SVRA's former tech director) created a forum for racers and crew to discuss current vintage racing issues and period history.
http://www.vintageracerules.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm

Might be of interest to the current vintage racer folk.

I arrived in the NE a little late to know many of the "founding fathers," When I ran into the BMC teams at Daytona and Sebring, they were largely filled with the rally drivers, and Colgate is a common name in GB as well ... but then I saw him listed as a yank, with a Jr. behind his name on an entry list.

So, I can't give you an answer, but I copied the Marlboro list. Those guys know far more about that crew than I would anyway.

Cheers, Bob

Steve Colgate who runs a sailing school and competed in Americas Cup races is an heir and is about the right age to be a brother or cousin or something.

Anyone know who might have raced a Frazer-Nash at Marlboro in 1955? That driver
raced under the number 110. I am trying to help someone track down a car and
driver combination. Thanks, folks.

Steve,
I did not find a Marlboro car, but there was a Frazer Nash at Hagerstown in
1955 #202 of Frank Adams and another at Cumberland in 1955 #247 of Charles Moren
Jr.

Bill Scott won the BIG FV race at the Nurburgring (and then was hit by a
spectator car while walking on the track the next year, resuling in
serious injuries.) He won the FSV series, and he and Milner dominated
for years with their teams.

The first time I saw Bill Scott run was in 1966. In 1968 Bill finished 2nd in
the NE Division and went on to become National Champion in the US and Europe. In
1969, the last year of Marlboro, Bill did double duty in a FF Royale (3rd
NED/dnf ARRC) and a FV McNamara (2nd NED/2nd Arrc).

Certainly Steve Piper has to be considered a hotshoe.  I don't know what year Bill Scott started racing FV but I was at Marlboro when Joe Hoppen arrived at Marlboro to take a look at what the US drivers were doing with their cars.  Joe had just arrived from Germany and Bill offered to let him drive his FV and then was sorry he did as Joe had the car on maximum revs all the way down the straight.  Jim McDaniel was also there but I forgot who the third driver and car was.  That must have been about 1966 or 67.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know if Marlboro Motor Raceway had in force a 'Rain Insurance' policy during 1957?
I ask because of the dire conditions on several of the race dates in the second half of the year. For example only 370 spectators turned up for the October 6th meeting.
Many thanks

Opens with a great current photo of Carroll Shelby, Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney. Just after I did a nostalgia article about Dan and Parnelli's epic duels in the TransAm( ... I felt they were mainly racing each other, and let the rest of the field take care of themselves!)

A neat uplifting status report of Parnelli's son, Page's recovery status. After racing injuries that were all but fatal, and usually resulting in life long disabilities, his family did not give up. With intensive and loving therapy, he is married and working. Now the founder of the Godspeed group, dedicated to recovering from traumatic head injuries. Should be of special interest with Gabrielle Giffords' and so many current military victims. Soon to be on a TV program.

On another uplifting note, long suffering from heart issues, loved writer Pete Lyons is recovering from major surgery, and we're hoping for a full recovery.

I've attached a .pdf file, and hope you can read it. A great idea for those dozens of dash plaques peeled from your old TR-3 before you junked sold it. Dan and Evi Gurney agree!

Cheers, Bob

There is a website out there called historicaerials.com
Lucky for us it covers portions of Maryland. Just type in Marlboro Raceway in
their search window and an aerial will appear of the track with the choice of 8
different years.
I starts in 1953 with the earliest configuration, the 1/3 mile dirt oval. Then
switch to 1957 and you will see the road course added. The other years available
are 1963,1970,1980,2002,2005 and 2006.

Aloha Ron,

Thank you for sharing this.

I can confirm that the Steel Cities region was miffed when the Washington
contingent cme to their rce an took home most of the trophies.

A friend who has been a member of Steel Cities since around 1952 told me the
story several years ago.

It's hard to imagine Marlboro or Summit Point without Bud Williams, who passed
away a few years ago. Sadly, this week we lost his wife, Marie. Here is the
information I received from Steve White:

Marie Williams passed away today. I learned of this from Vince Auletta. He said
the viewing will be Monday at Lee's Funeral Home in Clinton, MD from 2 to 4 and
6 to 8. The funeral info was sketchy, but probably Tuesday at a Catholic Church
somewhere near their home. If you want more info, contact Tommy Rougeaux at

That is sad news.  I met Marie and Bud at Marlboro in January 1965 when I first arrived.  Bud and I used to have lunch together when I worked on K Street and he was still in the Air Force.  Marie was always willing to work long hours at registration at both Marlboro and Summit Point and I miss her already.  My last conversation with her was at the reunion two years ago under the big tent and she was well and in great spirits and looking forward to seeing some of the olf Marlboro guys.

It's been a long time for me since Marlboro and Summit Point.  But the loss of any of our "family" is sadly felt.  More so at Marlboro than Summit Point (for me), that group was like a family to me.  My condolences to all our family.

I've got an almost-complete collection of Vintage Motorsports for '96 through
'04. Tried to sell them a couple of times on eBay, but now I just want to get
them out of the house. I'd much rather find them a good home instead of tossing
them in the recycle dumpster.

They fill a storage box. Pick them up and they're yours. I live in Clifton, VA
and I drive to work in Rosslyn every day--my office is more or less where Fowler
Motors used to be. If you're interested send me an email and we'll figure out
how to get them to you.

For those interested, I posted several items that I recently scanned related to
this race. They were lent to me by David Ash's friend Stan Smilow who shared
his Motto MG with David at this race. The race was won by Duncan Black in his
Lester MG and David took second in the Motto MG. Stan won the novice race in
the Motto MG also.

Attached is the 4 part flyer about the race, Stan's tech inspection sheet
(anyone know who EJW was?), his driver tag and a couple articles about the race.
Don't know why the files got jumbled out of order when I loaded them, but if
anyone more technically savvy out there can fix the order, have at it.

Good Morning,

For about the last year or so I have been researching the road racing Pontiac
Tempests/LeMans of the early 60's. The first race in which these cars competed
was the 1961 Marlboro Twelve Hour. My reserach is summarized on a website
located at:

http://members.cox.net/tempest-lemans/index.htm

While I have been able to turn over a significant amount of information, I don't
feel like I have been able to get the whole story. Later this year, I will
adress the POCI (Pontiac Oaklnad Club International ) Convention and would like
to be able to tell the "Rest of the Story".

To date I have reviewed period newspaper and magazine accounts of the race. My
question is, does anyone in the group have any other information such as
documentation, photos, programs, posters, race results, entry lists,
rememberances, recollections, etc. they would be willing to share?

Hi Mike,

A few years off, and completely off topic, but the combination of "Pontiac/Oakland" rings this bell:

This is one of the connections to the most bizarre chain of "jinxed" people connected primarily to the first Powder Puff Derby held in 1928.

It is so long and complex that it is still in "development".

For example, think of a murder case similar to the Simpson case, held in Miami, Florida, decades earlier, also ending in acquittal by a jury; disappearing bodies; the death of Knute Rockne; the death of a pilot/salesman while selling an airplane to W. Crapo Durant, the founder of Generous Motors (as they were called at Marlboro in the 1950s); and many other fatalities, including suicides, heart attacks, air race crashes, deaths of spouses, etc.

To date I have reviewed period newspaper and magazine accounts of the race. My question is, does anyone in the group have any other information such as documentation, photos, programs, posters, race results, entry lists, rememberances, recollections, etc. they would be willing to share?

You may contact me via the Yahoo Marlboro Group, via the "Contact Us" page on the website, via phone at 703-830-4163 or via USPS at:
