Hi Robert

I've posted an album from the driver's school, but It is not the fall one

I expect this is not your driver's school, as you said it was in the fall

Between the novice stripes & passengers in the cars in some shots, I'm pretty
sure it is a driver's school, though there are only 4 rolls in this film unlike
some earlier years where Bill might have shot as many as 8 rolls

As you can see there were at least 3 Spitfires at the event, there are more
photos of these cars, at least the #37

If this is from a 1968 drivers school from Marlboro, I know this was not the fall event.  There were no Cobras at the Fall 1968 school.  Several Corvettes and I think a Shelby Mustang.

Steve:

I guess I misremembered my drivers schools. Guess it was Spring and Fall, 1968
(I thought it was fall '68, spring 69). The 37 car is me. I'd recognize that
Bell bubble shield anywhere. And the stupid little latches on the side.

Thanks so much for posting.

There are a few more. A couple are similar & the car is in the picture, but not
the subject of the picture in one or two more.

I'll look thru them again later this evening & post

Hi Don, I have not long joined the group, hence a somewhat tardy reply to this
post.
According to Straightpipe magazine it was your goodself who drove the Morgan
#411 at Marlboro. Looking at the mixed field of class D and E cars, I imagine it
would have been the novice race. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Kindest regards
Terry

Hello and welcome to the group.

I never used that number. All of my Morgans, including the present one,
have born #97 but it is barely possible that I was driving another car. If
so, it was not a novice event. The only time I recall driving another Morgan
it was Bob Kenna's. I don't recall his number but it was an Old English
White car with red interior that I drove in one qualifying race.

Cheers
Don

I've posted some photos from an event dated Nov 24 1968

It's neither a National nor a Regional & some cars are carrying novice stripes

i suspect its the Turkey Bowl if it was held as late as '68

I know Steve L had said something about the history of the Turkey Bowl in a
recent post, so I'll check his post out later

Meanwhile these are some of the cars running in the big bore group. I'll post a
few more from this group & some of the others in the next day or two

Some good shots of our hero Rick Mandelson in his FV in the next batch or two

Also entertaining any requests from this event. If you were there, we have
pictures most likely

Time after time when I look at these photos, I see the corner workers in a full
sprint towards the scene of an accident in process. DC Region workers rock!

I'll post an example or three as I review the photos

The #92 A/S Camaro is Rusty Jowett, the #41 white Corvette Sting Ray is Fred Brandt and the #12 open roadster Corvette is Sam Armstrong.

Do you happen to have any other photos with the #23 Shelby GT 350 (gray on the driver's side, white with blue stripes down the middle and dark color on the passengers side)?

Thanks, Erik

Hi Erik,

Yes, there are a couple other photos of the car, though I may have posted the
best one. I'll go thru them today & post the other ones of the car that are any
good. The A&B Sports Racers ran with the group & for me, the most interesting
car was a Genie ASR. I'll post some photos of that car & a couple other of the
Sports Racers as well before I move on to the next group

Also, I'm not sure, but I think that is the last Marlboro Event for 1968, though
there is possibly another special event at Marlboro (refrigerator Bowl?)

After that, I'll probably to Thompson which has some excellent photos, many of
NE Division cars that weren't Marlboro regulars

There are also some big events like Daytona & Riverside one of which I'll use
for the next edition of laprecord.com which I'll publish in laprecord.com along
with coverage of next weekend's Festival of Speed at Fleet Week in San Diego.

I watermark the photos I use on laprecord.com to protect the DC Regions rights
to the images, but here, in our little group, I do not, as these are intended
for the private use of our members

Between correcting for exposure & such & watermarking the images, which I didn't
used to do, things slow down quite a bit

To Erik,
I remember that race well.  If I'm not mistaken, I think you bumped my rear going into the hairpin.  Just a crack in the fiberglass.  I think you locked up the brakes and slid into me.  Caught me by surprise but I shrugged it off and put the hammer down on the straight.

There was a Refrigerator Bowl, but if I remember correctly, it wasn't until after New Years.  It was bitter cold. Freddie Brandt took B Prod. on Sat and I took 2nd B Prod.   I remember Lou Statzer showing up on Sunday with ice in his radiator.  He thawed it out and went on to win B Production, putting Freddie Brandt 2nd and me 3rd in class.

Sorry about that.   But I know it was a white GT 350 that hit me in the rear.  I thought it was you.  I'm going to check the results sheet for that race and I'll get back to you on that.

I would like to take credit for the bump on Don's car (ya'know rubbing is racing...) but I was only about 3 months old (1968) around then and couldn't quite reach the pedals just yet...

Ps: Who is listed as the driver of the Shelby by the way?

Nov. 24th  Yep Turkey Bowl.  Erik was the Shelby GT 350
I'll see if I can check my results sheet from that race to check out the numbers.  If the photos were taken in the race (not practice), I should be able to match numbers with names.  Give me a day

Don,

Am I correct that the event was the Turkey Bowl?

Which car is Erik's?

Can you identify any more of those in the album?

Hi Don,

The Refrigerator Bowl was traditionally the first Sunday after 1 January.

Do not know if this changed after 1965, the last time I attended.
Best wishes,

David

There was a Refrigerator Bowl, but if I remember correctly, it wasn't until
after New Years. It was bitter cold. Freddie Brandt took B Prod. on Sat and I
took 2nd B Prod. I
remember Lou Statzer showing up on Sunday with ice in his radiator. He thawed
it out and went on to win B Production, putting Freddie Brandt 2nd and me 3rd in
class.

To Erik,

I guess I was put off by Steve's question as to  "Which car is Erik's?".  I remember a Shelby but didn't pay much attention to the drivers.  I was too excited about being in my first "real" race.  As opposed to driver's school or drag races of the past.

No problem Don, there are several pictures of your car, which is one of the ones
with novice stripes

I know your tools & skills are far better than mine, so I'll be happy to post
temporarily, due to their size, the original .tiffs which were scanned at
2400dpi, as the starting point for enhancing the photos

Bills negatives are consistently underexposed, sometimes severely, & they can be
helped considerably using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. I'm a hacker, have
never learned what the proper technique is, so I'm sure you will get better
results

I've been through them 3 or 4 times now & I only found one more of your car
which I'm working on with the next group of photos

Your car is not the subject of the photo to the extent that it is in the others
tho

On the plus side it's in Cappy's with a gaggle of cars

Hi Don

For the best quality image, the original .tiff files would probably be the best
starting point rather than the jpgs which are already adjusted & in most cases,
cropped.

So if there are special images that you would like, let me know & I'll post them
temporarily for you to download & use as the starting point

The files are huge though, about 8.5 MB ea, so I will only post specific images
as requested & will not leave them up for long

I've posted some photos from an event dated Nov 24 1968

It's neither a National nor a Regional & some cars are carrying novice stripes

i suspect its the Turkey Bowl if it was held as late as '68

I know Steve L had said something about the history of the Turkey Bowl in a recent post, so I'll check his post out later

Meanwhile these are some of the cars running in the big bore group. I'll post a few more from this group & some of the others in the next day or two

Some good shots of our hero Rick Mandelson in his FV in the next batch or two

Also entertaining any requests from this event. If you were there, we have pictures most likely

Time after time when I look at these photos, I see the corner workers in a full sprint towards the scene of an accident in process. DC Region workers rock!

I'll post an example or three as I review the photos

It turns out that Yahoo will not allow upload of tiff files, so I cannot post
any source files, even temporarily

I will still post full sized jpgs on request temporarily however

Also Don, Steve Lloyd has the archival DVDs with the source files as well as the
jpgs

Depending on where we go with this, you might be able to access them to do the
best possible job on selected images for the "cyber museum" along the lines of
the VIR History site that we've discussed in the past, hopefully something even
better

We've had a volunteer for a Webmaster & now that the end of the scanning project
is in sight at last, I'll be able to devote more energy to how to best share
these images in an appropriate fashion & in a way that protects the interests of
the DC Region

Personally, I think designing a cyber museum would be an interesting exercise in
web design & with the Bill Dobbins archive & possible future contributions of
materials by others, I think we could do something really unique & interesting.

The first album, 0-0 special requests, or some such now has the original, full
sized jpgs for the 3 images of your car

Short of trying to email you several 8+ MB files, these are the best images that
we have to use as a basis for enhancing them.

Please post the results & maybe share some tips on how best to improve them
