I am forwarding an update on Donna Mae.  If you didn't send a card then this is a good time to do it.
I hope everyone  had a good summer, racing, watching racing, or just keeping busy.  Bob Hines

Hello to  all Donna Mae Mims Fans,

I spoke with Eric Dean, who with John Connolly, is handling affairs for Donna Mae, and asked about sending cards, flowers, and receiving visitors.  He says to hold off right now until they get her settled in somewhere.  She has been moved several times and it seems the cards and flowers aren’t finding her and she shouldn’t have visitors at this time.  He says she can’t speak or write but understands everything.  Eric said he would be sending another update soon maybe when things get more settled.  Here’s what we can do:  Send cards for Donna Mae to Eric and he will hand deliver.  I will get a card for the Corvette Club of Western PA to sign and will bring one to the two SCCA races at Nelson Ledges in Oct.  -  maybe some of you can do the same to let her know we are thinking about her and miss her.  Let’s keep Donna Mae in our thoughts and prayers.

To send cards:

I read this email over the phone to Eric and he approved it before I sent it to everyone.

I read the Obituary in one of the PA papers yesterday.  They said she had requested that her viewing should be in/on her pink Corvette.  Sounds like her.

It is sad news...

I was at Summit Point this past weekend and Harley Holt told me Reed was racing a Spec Miata, car number 54.  Harley and I spent a few minutes talking with Reed who is now almost 74 years old and getting actively back into racing.  He picked a tough group to run with as the Miata guys consider their cars to be expendable.

I also ran into other Marlboro Alumni..... Ernie Stalder FV, Harley of course who was there with his nephew who was also racing, Josh Cockey long time flagger from Marlboro days to the present, Bob Roose, same as Josh only he has always worked grid, Jim Harrison who was helping in registration and not racing that weekend, and ex steward Larry Brinkman.

My son was driving a Spec Miata to see how much fun they were and to get another race in before the local season ends.  He worked his butt off to finish 6th in the Sunday race out of a large field.  He was happy just to get into the top ten as all the guys up front have years of time in their cars.

Michael,
While the DC Region doesn't have the program from that event, I may be able to copy the Straightpipe report. Was this the first race in May of 1955, or a later '55 event? As far as I know, most of the Region's earliest races included an all-MG race at each meeting. As you probably know, that continued into the early 1960s.

Hi Steve,

The one I'm looking for is the October 1955 race. I put a two page article on
the race from SCI in the photos section of the website a long while back. Any
coverage you have from Straightpipe would be greatly appreciated expecially if
it has a nice results listing. If anyone else out there has the program, please
let me know!

Aloha Bob,

Is this the 1049 in the hangar at the old MKC? I toured the hangar in January
2007 and the Constellation was nearly finished at that time. I was able to enter
the cabin and cockpit which remain as they were when it was in service. They
also have a DC3 and a couple of other ex TWA planes that former A&P TWA
employees were working on.

Flying on a Connie at night was always exciting as the exhaust flames from the
R3350s flowed back over the wing and it looked like the wings were on fire.

Aloha Bob,

In April 1944 Howard Hughes and Jack Frye flew the prototype Model 49 from
Burbank to National. They set a transcontinental record time. We were living in
Fairlington because my father was stationed at Gravely Point. I remember being
taken out to watch as the Constellation circled DC before landing.

Still have them and are planning on adding a L1011. So far, all old TWA
planes. I hope they can find a Ford Trimotor that they started with as TAT.

Farlington has almost been forgotten. LOTs of racers lived there, but as
I95 grows, it keeps disappearing.

Hi Steve,

I have the first race at Marlboro as

22 May 1955

then

10 July 1955

then

30 Oct 1955 which was an all MG affair

Does anyone out there possibly have this program that they can copy

Hi Bob,

I saw a TAT Tri Motor in barn California a few years ago. It was not air worthy.
Bill Harrah made a Tri Motor air worthy and it was used in Grand Canyon tours
for some time. There is another flyable Tri Motor in LA.

For that matter, I used to visit the Navy "temporary" buildings along
Constitution Ave on the mall in the 60s, where the Viet Nam memorial is
today. Remarkably, many locals thought they were WWII temporary
buildings. Nope! WWI!

Cheers, Bob
btw - In '67 when I flew an F-4J from Alameda to 'Nam, my first stop was
Barber's Point ... too good a chunk of land along the Hawaiian sea shore
to survive Clinton's developer buddies.

Cheers, Bob

Mike,
I don't have a program or complete results, but here is the Washington Post
article from Monday Oct. 31, 1955. Hope this helps.

Larry Jendras Jr.
Sykesville, Md.

BLACK WINS AT MARLBORO
Oct. 30 -- Favorite Duncan Black of Parkton, Md. won the 25 lap Congressional
Cup feature race in the National MG races at the Marlboro Motor Raceway here
this afternoon.
Driving a Lester-MG, Black took the lead on the first lap as he passed Suzy
Dietrich, Sandusky, Ohio, the only woman driver in the race, on the first turn.
David Ash of Stony Point, N.Y. was second and Dick Thompson of Washington, D.C.
third.
Two drivers won races for the first time in the Novice divison. Howard Tolley
of Arlington, Va. driving a TD-MK II, won a 10 lap race and Stan Smilow of White
Plains won the second 10 lap grind.
In the special ladies race, Mrs. Dietrich won the six lap run. Second was Mrs.
Fred Windridge of Arlington and third was Mrs. Nell Baptista of Hyattsville, Md.
  Other winners include: Dr. Louis Winkler, Bethlehem, Pa. for Formula 3 cars;
Duncan Black, Modified; Steve Spitler, Bethesda, Class FC and FD; Frank
Baptista, Hyattsville, Class GA and GB and Lex Dupont, Wilmington, De. Formula
3's.

I am trying to find the dates of death of Charles Wallace and Dick Lord.

The Social Security Death Index has too many names similar to the above to be
definitive.

Purpose: adding them to Motorsport Memorial.

Dick was a good friend and customer at Motor Imports, Ltd., in Rockville. He
bought my Fairthorpe Electron and ran it is several races.

Charles Wallace was my driving school instructor at Marlboro in 1956-57.

I can't help you with Dick Lords' date but I know he died at Marlboro in his race car so that had to be before 1969 as that was the last year the track was open for sports car racing.

It just happens that I've been talking to Debby Demaree, now selling
real estate in Bethesda. Some of you recall my driving the ex-Tweedale
Lola 1100 Sports, the passionate purple Daimler SP-250, the ex-Woody
Woodruff Lotus 11/Alfa, then the Brian Hart powered 2 liter prototype
with the LEADCO designed body on the monocoque I built on top of
Pumpelly's March 702 suspension. Or the abundance of Jags, Masers,
Daimlers, Ferraris, Cobras, and Lambos I owned and kept running. Not
bragging or babbling, but now I'm into smart cars!

Yeah, the 3 cylinder, one liter two place "smaller than a Mini" econo car.

Debby owns one also, and has painted it purple (I'm sure an homage to my
Moby Grape Daimler Dart!)

OK, why am I inflicting this on you all? Well, Debby's dad was one of
the Lavender Hill Mob! And she was a good friend of Charlie Wallace and
his kids, and is sure she can provide his date of death for the memorial!

So Phil and all, get in touch with her and start sharing memories.

Cheers, Bob

Hi Folks!

No, our informal Marlboro gang hasn't disappeared. I've just been very busy
wirth teaching at two local community colleges and I've not had a lot of time
for my "fun" stuff.

That said, I trust you had a great Thanksgiving. Folks, I need your help. Once
again, VRG wants us to be part of their 2010 Jefferson 500 at Summit Point on
the first weekend of May in 2010. You may have even seen the ads in Vintage
Motorsport and elsewhere. It is a "go." We have the date, and VRG is allowing
us to be part of the vintage racing weekend.

What I'd like to know is this: WHAT WOULD MAKE THE PERFECT MARLBORO REUNION FOR
YOU? Some of you were with us when we had our reunion in Suburban Virginia as
the guests of the Washington DC Region, SCCA. Still more of tyou joined us in
2008 at Surreybrooke and Osteratg in Frederick, MD. for our vintage car
show/Marlboro reunion. And a whopping 200 of you attended last year's VRG
Jefferson 500 Marlboro Reunion.

Please think about what you enjoyed about these events and what you did not
particularly like. May I ask you, over the next few weeks, to e-mail me and let
me know what YOU would like from our 2010 iteration? Bob Houston and I will be
meeting soon, along with VRG and the management of Summit Point to discuss what
we want to do for 2010. We already have some ideas: the primary idea is a
"story-telling" session like the 2007 Gold Cup 50th anniversary at VIR. But
that's not cast in stone. The only difference this year is that we will have to
be 100 percent self-funding. That means our "entrance fee" will have to cover
whatever our share of a banquet, etc. might be.. That's probably not such a big
deal, but if you want to join us and see your old Marlboro friends, we'd sure
like to now what you'd enjoy from such a weekend. May I ask you to give that
some thought and get back to me as soon as you can? Bob and I and VRG would
like to meet before the holidays if that's possible. That way we can start
publicizing the event at the very beginning of the New Year.

All the best to all of you!

Hi Steve..........Bob Hines here.  I missed the first two events but did go to the Summit Point tent and dinner event and ran into a lot of old friends.  I thought that was a decent dinner but it all seemed to last such a short time.

BTW I just received a box of 6 CD's of old Marlboro tapes from Brad Davis.  I know that he and Dave Roethel had some issue with them but Brad knew that I was interested and it took him 8 months, but they finally arrived.  I dont know whats all on them as I am only half way thru the first one.  That CD has some 1961 films and one of the long distance races which might be a 12 hour as it goes into the night.

Hello Steve,

The greatest fun for me was the weekend at the track and the reunion dinner.

I have just bought a racing Morgan and joined VRG so I plan to be at the
