Folks,
It might take me a while to find the reference, but I know that both
AMA and AAMRR motocrycle racing organizations raced at Marlboro until
the early 1960s. One thing about this that is emblazoned in my memory
is being a teen and trying to get my folks to take me to Marlboro for
SCCA events before I had my driver's license. They weren't fond of
racing and thought it was a rough, ropwdy crowd. It didn't help
matters when a major AMA race at Marlboro was cancelled because the
motorcycle gang known as the "Pagans" were going to make it one
of "their" events. I don't know if it was the track ownership who
cancelled the race or PG county police or state troopers. But it made
news in the Washington Post and Evening Star. Didn't help my cuase AT
ALL!!
Ironically enough, some ten eyars latrer I got into road racing
motorcycles myself -- first with AAMRR and then the ERA, soon to be
WERA! And we weren't a rowdy, rough crowd.
By the way, does anyone remember the PG county cop who'd hang out at
Start/Finish and carried a snubnose .38 and cigarettes in his socks?
Don't ask me -- I'm just reporting what I saw. :-)
