Hi guys,

The temperature of the water has reached a comfortable level
(finally). Many of us are enjoying the water in full wetsuits
(steamers) or drysuits. With out hoods, boots, or gloves. However,
you may want to wear some combination of these items (depending on
your personal tolerance level) on days like today where the air
temperature was colder than the water.

Have fun!

Hi Myron,

I'm one of the newer windsurfers in town, and I have a question for you...

I'm just wondering where the best place is to look for what the conditions are.  I checked weather network as well as the environment canada websites, and both said 5 to 10 knots for last saturday.  I heard that it was a great day though, and I'm frustrated that I don't know when to pack up my gear and come out.  Where should I be looking?

I've checked out your website in the past, too, and found it helpful, but clearly I'm still confused!

Thanks for your help!

same at Regina Beach at the "Canadians"!

Hi Caroline,

Unfortunately, the wind around here is not on a clock (no tradewinds
here).

The Weather Network forecasts for wind are usually on the
conservative side. You can't depend on the Environment Canada
forecasts. You can't always believe what you see on the Environment
Canada Summary. Sometimes you just have to head out and take a look
for yourself. Sometimes the wind will be there for you (maybe less
wind, maybe more wind). Sometimes if you wait, you will get your
wind. Sometimes you get skunked.

My weather page has lots of resources for understanding and learning
about weather as well as different resources for current conditions,
trends, forecasts and weather models. None are 100% accurate (lucky
to get 60%).

The Manitoba Lakes are large and can create thier own weather that
does not match anyones forecast. Sometimes in our favour, sometimes
not.

Rule #1: Take ALL your gear with you when you head to the beach!

Welcome to windsurfing in Manitoba.

Saskatchewan Wind 'n Water Weekend
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WindandWater/files/poster-www.doc

It's next weekend (June 18-20) in Elbow on Lake Diefenbaker.

"I think this is the 17th annual - one of the longest running
windsurfing /kiting events in world history!"

A good bunch, run one of the most successful clubs in the country
and know how to host an event. Many of us have gone to this event in
the past. There are no guarantees for wind. However, I think it's
always been a good time regardless of conditions.

hey char. Well, as for the best place to learn, I'd have to vote for the
lagoon at grand beach. it's small so the waves don't get ya, and there's a
great launch for rigging etc. You can rent equipment there on the weekends,
but I don't know about lessons. If you're out on a windy day, though,
there's always lots of folks around who would be happy to give you some free
advice, I'm sure (I get a lot of free advice that I didn't even ask for
cause I'm not very good! Heheh)
On another note, I'm moving to Toronto very shortly, and my board isn't
coming. It's a great beginner kit (it was my first board) big and sturdy
with a daggerboard and a small lightweight rig; easy to handle. I'm selling
the whole deal for $1000; it's a pretty good deal. It's a BiC Veloce 328
(that means it's 328cm long); which is pretty big compared to what you'll
see most guys riding. Bigger board=more stability=good for
beginners/novices. My sail is 4.7m, which is also pretty small comparatively
speaking, but it's about all I can handle! (I'm pretty small and weak
heheh). And obviously it's easier to learn with a smaller sail! I think I
learned with a 3m sail. Last Monday I was out and there was a good wind and
I was cruisin' with my 4.7 and the rest of the guys out there had 7.0s and
8.0s; they were shredding!
I learned at summer camp when I was a kid, but there's really only so much
you can be told; you just gotta feel it. You learn through trial and error
that if you throw your mast back, you go up-wind, and the more you pull your
clew (the tip of your boom) in, the more power you get etc...
Have you even been on a board before? I'll warn you that it's discouraging
the first time you try; it's a heck of a lot harder than it looks. But IT'S
WORTH IT; once you get planing it's the best feeling in the world!
Are you in Winnipeg? Maybe we could go out to the lagoon together some time!
I'm totally reading into things here, but you sound like a gal in your early
twenties, which is what I am (okay, that sounds like I'm hitting on you. I'm
not a lesbian!!!! I just want to make sure you're not some 50 year old man,
heheh) There aren't too many young women on the scene in manitoba; that's
for sure!!!
Cheerios Keli

Hi there,
I am looking for a bigger rig setup. Currently, we have a 6.5 which is OK, but needs a couple of white-caps around before it pushes onto a plane. In otherwords, I'm looking for something in the region of 8.0 to 9.0 (and if you have a cheap 7.5 lying around I'd also consider that.) Please also let me know if you have any booms and masts to complete the package as I seriously doubt that what we have now (boom = 140-200cm and I'm not sure about the mast) will be big enough for a larger sail.

Thanks,
Happy sailing,
Gareth
