Alberta man killed in freak storm Sunday loved the wind,
says his spouse

LAC SAINT ANNE, Alta. (CP) -- An Alberta man who was
kiteboarding when a freak storm carried him to his death Sunday loved the
wind, his spouse said Monday.

Larry Boufford died when freak gusts of 100 kph winds
threw him into an abandoned church in Alberta Beach, west of Edmonton.

"He died doing what he most wanted to do," Terry McHardy
said. "I can feel his spirit still doing what he loved. I believe his spirit
is still riding the wind."

McHardy said Boufford was a quiet, introspective man,
with a dry sense of humour.

"One of our bonds that kept us together for 20 years was
that we loved the winds and the outdoors," she said.

She said that after they checked the weather Sunday
morning, he warned her not to go out because high winds were expected.

"How much I miss him, I just can't even begin to tell
you," she said.

The winds that killed Boufford wreaked havoc across
north-central Alberta.

A Millet man said he's lucky he wasn't in his mobile home
when it was flipped onto its roof.

"The sound was unreal," Ralph Martinoff said. "It blew
the skirting out from under it, and the next thing I knew, it was over. It's
a write-off."

The four-year-old mobile home, which had been parked a
few kilometres outside of Millet, cost around $70,000, Martinoff said.

Environment Canada's Dan Kulak said there were reports of
thunder and lightning in and around the Edmonton area, mostly to the west on
Sunday afternoon.

"If you're going to get 9 C in December, you're going to
get some action when the cold front comes through," he said.

Wind gusts recorded Sunday at Edmonton city centre tied
the December record of 98 kph, set back in 1979.

Just outside the city at the Rabbit Hill Snow Resort,
gusts derailed one of the ski slope's chairlifts, forcing the rescue of 45
people who were on the lift at the time.
